My guess is that the helo was on a VFR night flight for training. IF that was the case, and from what little I could see from the film, the helo APPEARED to have flown into the AA (American Airlines) flight. I am a retired Air Traffic controller of 30 years (both military and FAA). IF the helo was on a training mission in VFR (Visual Flight Rules (see and avoid) conditions, the pilots may have been distracted by the training going on in the helo IF that is what was occurring. The AA flight was on final and descending into DC to land. The night was CAVU (Clear Air Visibility Unrestricted). If the helo (although instructed to maintain visual separation by ATC) was distracted by whatever, (it's extremely noisy in military helicopters), the helo MAY HAVE UNWITTINGLY flown into the commercial jet, thus causing the midair collision. (DISCLAIMER: this is my OPINION ONLY ... not factual until more facts become available over the ensuing days and weeks) 😔

@Kyle_P3 күн бұрын
Don’t fly at night if you can help it. Fewer crashes that are deadlier. I would also bet only reason there are more crashes during the day is purely volume. Similar to why driving a car is also fairly dangerous, we just do it so often. All my flight experience comes from simulators, but that’s still my advice. Avoid night flights. Go for the morning flights. Fairly calm and good visibility.

MOST military aircraft are UHF (Ultra High Frequency) equipped. Civilian aircraft are mostly VHF (Very High Frequency) ... ATC has both frequencies keyed up when they are controlling aircraft. HOWEVER, IF this was the case in this midair ... neither aircraft could hear the other

My bet would be ATC tried to "thread the needle" trying to anticipate gaps in flight patterns which if off by a small amount is very dangerous. ATC is under heavy pressure to handle more and more traffic. DC is very busy. I dont think military aircraft should fly over DC except presidential traffic. Too few ATC controllers doesn't help.

ATC did nothing wrong or abnormal. The Helicopter pilots did not follow the ATC instructions. People don't seem to understand that ATC does not control the aircraft, The pilots do. Even if ATC gives bad instructions (which they did not do in this circumstance) it's the pilot's responsibility to not crash the aircraft.
