I have a sincere question, Presvytera. Why do we pray in the Divine Liturgy that "we be given a Christian ending to our lives, PAINLESS, blameless, and able to give a good defense before the judgement seat of Christ"? This has always perplexed me.

But I've heard of so many Orthodox saints (including St. Porphyrios) and fathers (including fathers alive today) who say that they suffer because of their sins and they rejoice when they are very ill because Jesus is letting them share in his suffering. Why are they saying this? Because they are monks/priests?

Jesus prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemane, and in Matthew 26:39, he says, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt". Paul wrote to Corinth that he prayed three times for God to remove a “thorn in my body” (a bodily ailment). God did not fix the physical problem, but Paul said he “gladly” trusted God's nurturing grace. Both of these examples of suffering were clearly God's will and not as a result of sin. Take up you cross: Humble yourself and submit your will to God. Put God in first place in your life. Love everyone (even your enemy) as you yourself want to be loved. If you want forgiveness, you must forgive. If you want mercy, you must show mercy. Put sin to death in your body and your thoughts. Know that you cannot do any of this without God's loving grace helping you every day (humility). Trust in God's love even through difficulty and suffering. A life lived for God is difficult and requires struggle. Like in Exodus, He will be with you for the journey. Cry out to him when you are in distress, BUT, since He knows best, leave the outcome to His will.
