Searching a Half Dollar Box for Silver

I had a box of half dollars that was not chosen for several streams - mainly because the "sister" box was so bad and nobody wanted another skunk box. So I decided to do a solo hunt and search for silver, not expecting much... we ended up with a pretty good box overall since we found not only a handful of silver half dollars (including a Ben Franklin half dollar) but also netted ourselves a nice 1974 D DDO and some NIFCs! Rob, I have been enjoying watching you opening the half dollar boxes and seeing all of your finds. I have learned a lot but still very much a beginner. I decided to take a chance and I ordered 2 boxes of half dollars from my bank. in the first box I found a couple of NIFC's and that was all. The second box in the next to last roll I found a 40% 1968. I thought I was wasting my time but I ordered 2 more boxes. In the first box I found 3 NIFC's and a 1967. I had decided that I probably wasn't going to order any more, it seemed the effort wasn't worth it to someone who doesn't do this very often. Boy was I wrong! In the 4th box, I found 7 NIFC's and 34 40% Kennedy halves, 1-65, 3-66's, 16-67's, 11-68's and 3-69's!! I Obviously don't expect to find that every single time, but I have already placed orders for 2 boxes next week and 2 more 2 weeks later. I am going to order your mat so I can start looking for DDO's and other rarities as well. Thank you for all that you do and thank you for getting me hooked!!

If anyone’s wondering, I think NIFC stands for(not intended for circulation) and is why all the nifc’s are newer than 2002 is because they stopped making them for circulation in that year.

You never underestimate an unhunted box. I stack 40% for bulk sales, don't get many, but they sell for $2 to $4 each per 1000. Smelters don't want them at all. The process of Extracting the silver from 40% half dollar is nearly impossible. Coin shows buy them, other than that they are worth 50 cents tender.

Interesting. I have never had an issue moving 40% silver at my dealer. He'll pay near melt for them, although I tend to buy them from him to use for my streams more than I sell to him.

One of these days I'll hunt a half dollar box but the junk silver bins pay me just as well. Recently I pulled out two 1970s in a junk box and got them for close to face.

@@xd-metal9026 In ancient times (Pre-Pandemic) most Pawn and Coin shops had a bin or bag of "Junk" silver which usually contained U.S. constitutional silver coinage. Nowadays (at least in my experience) most shops don't have those bins anymore because of the silver shortage so whenever you see one it's always good to check it out.
