Decided to do some exploring in a small out of the way river in east Tennessee that I knew had the potential to catch a musky (muskellunge).
It didn't happen the way I thought it would.

the kayak has been a game changer for you - try more big live baits this year - you know how to catch the micros - best of both worlds - the other thing though is if it ain't broke don't fix it..

Nice!! In Greece where I live, still don't have basses, so pikes are targeted species. Winter time= cold water,i use 30gr wide spoons, preferably gold colour,mat or shine and or perch colored. Slow to very slow retrieve,near to the bottom and definitely steel leader, ten to twelve inches!!! Well done man!!!

If you go by the official Grand Divisions it's Middle Tennessee, but our whole state is awesome, so who cares. The falls and cave area has its own unique little microclimate which leads to some interesting flora and fauna. Every time my family has visited we have had the place to ourselves. It's one of many area waterfalls used for the 1994 live action version of The Jungle Book.

You cannot mess around with a muskie. You must boat them as quickly as you can. I know that's easier said than done but they will throw a bait quicker than any fish I've caught. But... if you have him on the right gear.....congrats. I know your heart was racing.

WOW ! Can we say, adrenaline rush !?! What a beautiful fish, and on a J Dalton yum dinger! They might as well re-name it, everyone knows when you go to a yum what color it will be. LOL ! Just a suggestion if your going to even attempt to catch these fish you need to upgrade your gear all the way from your rod and reel to your net. These fish are very easy to stress and have die. Quick land little handling and quick healthy release should be priority number one.

I'd say that that Muskie had quite a bit of power, to be able to give you a great fight like that...and, looking at that hook afterwards, I'm persuaded to believe that he was within just a little bit of tearing that hook out of his mouth, and getting away! That was a great catch, Brother John! By the way:I see that you're still using your same old stand-by: Good Ole Mountain Dew! YEE-HAW!!!!! Have a great evening, and I'll catch you on the flip side!!
@garytotty3971
@garytotty3971 Жыл бұрын
I noticed he is using a wire hook. Switch to a forged steel hook, and a ten inch piece of 30 or 40lb. test hard mono tippet. A muskie will have trouble biting thru a 40lb. piece of mono. I like wire hooks for bass and trout, but big stuff wants a stronger hook.

With Musky being the apex predator, their presence might be a reason you didn't catch any bass. That Yum Dinger seems to call bass to it. So they were probably absent in that part.

I'm up in Manitoba Canada, thanks for keeping plugin on the kayak. I always need an escape until open water here which could be April or May. Have only got 5 jackfish so far icefishing but I'm in the south and you gotta go to big water in these temperatures to get the good fish. I've never caught a musky but will be targeting them as time allows.

John; you need a better net! I've watched many videos where you had to fight the net. I use two Fishpond nets. A longer handled one (think they call it a "mid length") and a standard length. What I like about them is that they float if dropped in the water. Very light yet very strong. Plus they're pretty easy to rebuild. Where I live we have muskies and tiger muskies plus the northern pike. The tiger is on my bucket list, and have had the follow the lures. This spring I'm changing up on them and going with fur to six inch streamers with an 8 foot heavy rod. When I get this one done, I'm going after them with a fly rod (Loomis short stick with 10 weight line and four inch streamers). Then I'm headed south to a lake full of musky for either a broken rod or another fish on the bucket list. Lastly; John I really enjoy your bibles verses, but wish you'd double the time they are on the screen (us old guys read slow) may the Lord always have his hand on your back.....Gary

Well done. That's my game up here in the U.P., Musky in rivers. Smallmouth are fun and I've caught 1000's but Musky are it. Have plenty of Musky baits but my two biggest came on a 1/2oz Spot and a bass size spinnerbait so I'm not surprised you stuck two fishing the way you were. Also been cut off a lot throwing bass baits so you might want to use at least 20lb flo carb leader.

John are you doing all of your editing for your videos? Your videos look like you have professional production company doing them for you. I could watch them just for the the scenery you combine some of you shots together and make that a video. The drone shots in Florida, the swamp shots in Georgia & Carolinas and Michigan except for the landing there.🤫🤫🤫 They would make awesome nature videos the gar spawning in the grass (once in a lifetime shot) plus your under water shots along with the wildlife. This is so much more than just a KZbin fishing video. Thank You for the videos ...Douglas
