"And hopefully you'll build something that looks better than this" -- LOL, every factory you've shown in this video looks wildly cool compared to anything I've built. I make utilitarian spaghetti and it takes me 5x longer than it should. One friend I play with will have an entire sub-factory set up by the time I'm done hemming and hawing over how to make my "clean" belt layouts. Great starting ideas, I'm long overdue in checking out the latest updates!

Big time, Hexy. Sometimes I forget what it was like to start and not know how to build anything. I guess it is a little ridiculous for me to think a decent factory that has 5 train stations isn’t good enough, but I have developed high standards over the years. Remember that it isn’t a race (unless you want it to be). You will figure out your little methods and systems over time that will let you do the basics a little faster. Thanks for watching and commenting! I love hearing from you guys

The Titan Forest and the area around the lake you mentioned would be a great starting spot, now that they've introduced the passive/retaliate modes. The first time I stumbled into that spot, I must have had to kill around 10-12 hogs in the area around the lake - they just kept coming! One other thing to note is that there are some weird hit box issues around the titan trees themselves, preventing you from building in and immediately next to the trees. However, I may just start a new game here at some point, since the scenery and atmosphere is so beautiful and peaceful. Thanks for the alternate starting spot suggestions!

There are a TON of hogs. They kept sniffing around me while I was "filming". Good to know about the trees. I have never actually tried to build there...one of the reasons why I am thinking about starting my next game there. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Your description of a SoCal location made me laugh. Supercars parked on the street. Funny! I hope you're going to come back for 1.0. I'm subscribed, just in case.

I built my nuclear plant in the swamp but I can only spend so much time there. In general the atmosphere is super oppressive, it's hard to keep your bearings without constantly watching the compass and I just find myself feeling kinda blah after spending a while there. I agree though it's an amazing place for so many resources and conveniently located as well with all the resources it lacks readily available to the north and south. But one other flaw I'll note is it can be a bit difficult to figure out where you can place water extractors and some builds will likely require a lot of pipes running a long distance. It's not necessarily the best location for using refineries with the pure metal ingots for example. I like your other choices a lot. My favorite place I've started so far was a bit of a distance from the Northern Forest start at the cliff where it meets with the Spire Coast and Rocky Desert. I think another fun place to try and start would be the Crater Lakes area. Even when I don't start there it inevitably comes an important area.

Very fair critique of building in the swamp. I actually have never built there! Mostly because it is a bummer and my previous saves I kind of sped through. That rocky desert/northern forest spot is really awesome. Since I started this video just looking around for myself, I gravitate away from where I have built in past saves like that spot. I love Crater Lakes as well, but I feel like it is a little better later on. There isn't really any iron up there. However, there are some good iron nodes right at the base of the waterfall that flows out of the craters lakes (where I have my fused modular frames factory) Awesome feedback! I always look forward to your comments

@@DrLootCrate Glad you enjoy them! I figured since it's a relatively easy to find spot if you start there it's one many people find. It's really a shame there are no metals to be found within Spire Coast itself (yet?). That would be a cool (but challenging) place to center your build around if it just had even a few Iron and Copper..

Actually, I go to the swamp early on all the time, even with hostile creatures. Blade runners are a must, but I try and get them as soon as possible anyway. The most important thing is to keep moving most of the time. The abundance of mushrooms means you can eat your way through poison gas, and you can deal with the most dangerous creatures in the game, giant poison spiders, by kiting them into the hogs and spitters in the area.
@DrLootCrate
@DrLootCrate Жыл бұрын
You are a braver person than I, jaye1967. The kiting trick on the spiders is a good one! I am not particularly good at dealing with the creatures. Before retaliate mode, I would just wing nobelisk at anything from a safe perch. Scaredy cat 🙀
@jaye1967
@jaye1967 Жыл бұрын
@@DrLootCrate As log as you have a good supply of mushrooms and inhalers, it's comes down to getting the fairly easy timing of a couple of things. Spiders are run away and then take a 90 degree turn when you hear that squeal sound before they jump. Also two explosive rebars to the face will take even the biggest animals out. When I realized this my fear of the spiders went away. And don't forget to make what I call spider walls. 3 port conveyer walls work really well. I usually completely wall the cave with the big poison one near the swamp with them with one being a door that they can't fit through. Then if you connect something like 1M half slab floors two levels above the ground, the biggest spiders can't jump. I've taken a couple of stabs at creating the perfect spider wall that will let you easily deal with any of the animals but haven't quite got there yet.

4:40 The location seems to be 1535, -50. I went to where you said, but it certainly wasn't there. I believe I'm in the right spot now, but it certainly looks different. In researching, it seems they did an update of this area earlier in the year. If what I'm surmising is accurate, it might be a good idea to update the description-- if you're so inclined.

I'll have to find exact name location, but north of the tropical desert there is a big hill. has waterfalls and 2 sulfur nodes. well right down the hill by 200m or so there is everything you need. coal, copper, iron, sulfur ,oil, caterium, limestone and quartz. I'm talking pure nodes of average 2-3 each type. oil have normal and some impure but 6 nodes. so its insane starting there. you dont even need passive mode. you can get to phase 4 in about 2 hours or so? its wild

Oh yeah. That spot is awesome. I have massive supercomputer factory there. The reason I didn’t include it is that it is right next to the “northern forest” standard start. I was trying to identify areas that aren’t by the 4 built in starting location.

@@DrLootCrate awesome!!! one video request: i finally (i think) made a factory that is expandable, but i would want to see how a pro does it. making a factory using a mrk1 miner and designing it to where it can grow WITHOUT having to delete everything once you unlock mk.2 miner etc same with transporting product. do you sprint to train? or use trucks? i am on my 3rd play through, but its tough enjoying a build when i know what's around the corner. so i always get stuck building knowing I'll have to rebuild things.
@DrLootCrate
@DrLootCrate Жыл бұрын
Expandable factories is a good idea! I did set up a lot of my early factories in this save to be expandable, but I barely went back and expanded any of them. By the time that I wanted to make stuff at a bigger scale, I just moved elsewhere. But it is definitely a good subject for a video. I am basically a full train guy. Get there as fast as possible using belts across to place if I absolutely have to. I actually only set up trucks for the first time ever in my video from a few weeks back. You should check out my fails.

How do you do “no waste nuclear”? Is it a mod? I can’t sink anything radioactive in vanilla.

@@DrLootCrate Yeah, you can sink the Uranium Fuel rods too, but of all the Uranium things *only* the Fuel Rods. I think it's perhaps because it takes so many non-radioactive items to make them and that you're throwing away electricity...

@@DrLootCrate Yeah I had a sink in place for them temporarily because I started overproducing them while reworking my plant. It's kind of a habit for me with anything that uses liquids because a jam anywhere in those lines often shuts the entire thing down because of backed up liquids.
