These value judgments stem from religion. It strikes me as a fear based way of accepting death and pushing aside life. It's like Lorca almost gets it.. that mortality is what what makes life so precious. But they focus on death instead of life. I believe this is because religion tells them that death is just the beginning. It's depressing to see a culture worship struggle and pain simply for its own sake. Bullfighting comes to mind when Lorca says duende can not be repeated or scripted, and death must be just around the corner. There is a difference between being focused and in the moment and embracing pain and suffering as virtues. The latter rejects the mind.
