Searching For Prehistoric Hunting Camps/Tools In The High Desert - Ep 2

Where would people congregate to make tools 1,000 years ago?
5,000 years ago?
I ask myself this as I study topo maps and google earth.
Before agriculture became a thing in the Southwestern US, people would have moved often. They would have followed seasons and resources.
Naturally, they would have sought out places like caves, cliff bases with overhangs, springs, rock outcroppings, etc.
Any place that would have provided some type of shelter.
So that's where I look.
As spring turns to summer, I have to head up in elevation to escape the misery of the low desert. So until temps cool off, my search for prehistoric camps/tools will be done at higher elevations.

At 13:00, that's a good spot. There's a fireplace to your right and that first tool you picked up was a skinning knife. You definitely found a place. Cool finds. Those rounded stones are probably hammer stones. Very cool. Ethnographic evidence along with family stories, speculate these were as you say, hunting camps along with lithic production. And a lot of these sites were used for generations. Awesome.

Prior to the "invasion" of the Spanish and Europeans, it is estimated that there were hundreds of millions of beavers in America, and that as much as ten percent of the nation was covered in wetlands filled with wildlife. Billions of birds filled the skies. Game was abundant. People don't realize how much we have changed the land and the environment. I suspect the people living in that area a thousand years ago had a reasonably comfortable life. By the way, I love your videos!

@@EnigmaClandestino In JUST MY LIFETIME we have wiped out about half the sea mammals, fish, birds, and reptiles. In my lifetime the world population has more than tripled. We have in only a few decades created the greatest extinction event since the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. People today look at the world and think it always looked like this, but old folks like me remember. We are cursed with ignorance of our past. When you visit these old sites you see little trace of their world.

I’ve “Straddled” a Rattle Snake in the High Sierras years ago.What I learned was to “STOP” immediately, don’t move a muscle but look to find where the snake is. The snake is afraid of you and will only strike to defend itself. IF you stay still for about 3 minutes, the snake will usually unwind and slither away to its own safety..

Snake anxiety is a good thing. Better to be aware and alert and avoid being bitten. I used to just "be careful," but I was always on edge and it is exhausting to be that way all day in the desert. I now wear ABS black plastic guards that snap around the entire leg from the top of my feet to just below my knees. I think they are called Tuff Shins or something similar. I also carry a walking stick cut to my height that I probe ahead with in rocks and brush. I don't care if it looks paranoid. Most people who get bitten by rattlesnakes eventually get better even without treatment. But it can cause organ damage, amputation, and you will feel really sick for at least a week. Always seek treatment; but it will be expensive with many vials of antivenom and a stay in the ICU. The cost can run up to $200,000! Decent snake chaps or the ABS guards can cost from $50 to $100. The peace of mind and relaxed travel through snake country is well worth a few bucks. I walk many hours into remote country where there is no chance of rescue and nobody else around. So I travel prepared. Nice video!
