Searching For Prehistoric Hunting Camps/Tools In The High Desert - Ep 5

Episode 5
Where would people congregate to make tools 1,000 years ago?
5,000 years ago?
I ask myself this as I study topo maps and google earth.
Before agriculture became a thing in the Southwestern US, people would have moved often. They would have followed seasons and resources.
Naturally, they would have sought out places like caves, cliff bases with overhangs, springs, rock outcroppings, etc.
Any place that would have provided some type of shelter.
So that's where I look.
As spring turns to summer, I have to head up in elevation to escape the misery of the low desert. So until temps cool off, my search for prehistoric camps/tools will be done at higher elevations.

Good news on your truck and the amazing ride to you mechanics!! I can see why you stick with her, newer engine and all. This was a scenic outing and nice that you didn't have a war with the cedar gnats. You definitely found some prize tools or parts thereof. That heavy duty spear head was the winner and that razor sharp scrapper was a close second. That spring bubbling up and running fresh water would definitely have been a key hunting/ambush site. I concur with you those circular rocks were placed by humans. Really enjoyed this trip, as always. Adios!

There is definite evidence that people were in what is now the western US at least 18,000 years ago. Over that time a lot of stone tools were lost of discarded. But they were also picked up by later people to use or reshape. Then you had in historic times the Spanish, miners, cowboys, etc. snagging this stuff. So not finding much is what you would expect.

Some areas better than others. It’s funny how they tell you never to keep anything. But they forget that at some point they are going to sell the land to a builder and put homes on it like they do in my area. But I guess lost history is ok.
