As a child I used to love visited the abandoned stable and garden beside an old house. There was a lady in the house who watched me sometimes but I never damaged or took anything so she never stopped me. I still remember the peacefulness of the place and most especially watching a mother stoat with her kits all in a line behind her. She looked straight at me sitting still leaning on a tree, decided I wasn’t a danger, and walked on. 60 years later it’s still as clear in my mind.

@animeangel1983
@animeangel1983 Жыл бұрын
@@suzieb7622 Could be many reasons, can't pay the mortgage anymore and just want to abandon it, people could have died and left the house to rot without taking precautions to ensure it passes to the remaining family members. Or the bank that owns it doesn't know what to do with it.

"Abandoned" houses still belong to someone. Whether that be the bank, an heir, or an owner who has left town. So, you can't just go walking in there and grabbing stuff. You could be busted for theft and/or trespassing. And abandoned buildings aren't always safe. They might not be structurally sound, or dangerous people might be squatting there. So, while this is an entertaining video, messing around in abandoned buildings isn't necessarily the smartest thing to do.

When I see some of the abandoned homes across Europe I’m amazed at the artistry and value of the furniture and woodwork, stained glass left behind. I’d love to go out and save some of these pieces myself! The property you are looking at is in horrible condition. The only salvageable thing perhaps is the wood floors.

Must be an interesting story there. It’s not just an abandoned property, it’s an abandoned life. Not many people do that. Very sad to see clothing still hanging on hooks near the door, even though I am sure all kinds of people have been in and through that house, and even lived there temporarily. But, the positive thing is that we got a little bit to see how beautiful your country, and the countryside, is. Especially beautiful in the spring, I think? I spotted two bicycles to restore! We bought an old junkyard truck once at my old hot rod shop, and the bed was filled with junk bicycles. In it, I found a 1950's Schwinn beach cruiser that still had its badges. New spokes, rebuilt the pedal brake, powder coated the frame and polished all the chrome and sold that thing for $3000. I'd never restored a bicycle before, it was very easy and fun!

That whole place had potential for remodeling. I get offered a lot of furniture pieces that I pass over do to mold. Dressers and chests of drawers as they are called here smell like old cigar smoke years after they are refinnished when they come from an old barn or shed. Never been alble to get rid of the smell. People with allergies can't stand them. It's why I don't leave unfinished wood any more on furniture. It also happens when people use unheated storage units and they are popular every where in the US.

I have used tea tree oil to great success in getting mold off of timber and many other surfaces. I put perhaps 10ml into a spray bottle of 8oz (or 237ml). The mold just...melts, disappears. Furthermore, it is volatile, and evaporates--no need to rinse. I have also used ammonia without detergents in it (outdoors only!), but it darkens the wood. This seems to work when there is really only a bit of mold or foxing on a piece. I've not tried tea tree oil on anything that has become...fuzzy. I don't know how tea tree oil toxicity rates compared to bleach. Bleach never seems to really do the job anyhow.

@@Lucinda_Jackson Assuming him being there would technically be stealing, which is not a given, I could see an argument for not doing it, which I respectfully would disagree with. You could've made your point without making aggressive allegations about him being a thief in general though. He clearly runs a regular furniture restoration business where people come to him with their items for restoration. Ngl, you should be ashamed of yourself for posting something like that towards a master craftsman.
@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson Жыл бұрын
@@avienated I see that logic is not your strong suit. You start off saying that his taking anything from there isn't necessarily stealing. Does it belong to him - is he the owner? Nope. Does he have the owner's permission? Nope. And that's the very definition of stealing. As for my other statements, I wasn't aggressive. I simply stated facts. Yes, I understand he runs a business and the majority of what we see is his restoration of pieces brought to him by clients. But there is a good number of pieces where it's clear they are NOT from clients, too. Maybe 20-25%? If he is sourcing them in this way, then he is stealing them. Which would necessarily make him a thief. Sorry, but there's no way around that. Being a master craftsman has no bearing on that. Frankly, I think you are the one who should be embarrassed for thinking this is acceptable and asking for more. 🤷🏼‍♀️
@avienated
@avienated Жыл бұрын
@@Lucinda_Jackson I don't think he stated that he had not asked the owner for permission. While it's possible he has not, we shouldn't just assume that. For the sake of the argument, if he has not asked for permission, it's not given that it's morally wrong to do what he does. You have presented the argument for it being wrong. I'd say that it's a shame that good furniture goes to waste because of neglect. If he's able to save good handcraft from decay and vandalism I'll consider that a good thing. While property rights is an important part of society, they hardly trump all other ethical values in all contexts. As Guillou once wrote: "There's a difference between God's law and human law." Oh, I owe you an insult or two, but I don't want to share my original ones for you to copy ;)
@Lucinda_Jackson
@Lucinda_Jackson Жыл бұрын
@@avienated I'm not sure why you feel you should insult me, but I'm also not particularly interested. He makes statements at the beginning of the video and all the way through that make it plain he knows nothing about the owner - not his/her name or the reason the property is unoccupied with items, including a car, left in the house and on the grounds at this time. I think that all of us can safely assume he did not ask the owner for permission, considering he doesn't know who that is. And your moral compass is seriously askew if you don't see anything wrong with taking another person's property. Back to your car or your bike or your home when left unattended. Suppose your grass is unmown or the house needs paint and I'm homeless. Do you think I'd be justified in saying that because you have shown neglect and I need a home and will take care of it, it's now mine? That you've forfeited it? Or if your car has a flat tire or your bike has a broken chain, but I have no transportation and am willing to fix those things that I should help myself? We all know the answer to that because of logic and morals. To try to call stealing from someone simply because they are absent "God's law" borders on blasphemy. God gave 10 "laws" and the 8th was "Thou shalt not steal."
