One of my ancestral families lived in far northern Vermont, with part of the farm being in Canada. There were a few interesting things to try to research there, but nothing compared to my wife's ancestors, who, in far northern New York, had a farm and store* that straddled the US/Canadian border. The house was in the upstairs of the store, and people born in the house might be registered in Franklin County, New York, USA, or in Elgin, Le Haut-Saint-Laurent, Quebec, Canada! * The story, which I've never been able to confirm, is that the store had doors on both sides of the border. As long as you came and left through the same door, everything was OK w/r/t customs etc....not sure I completely buy that, but the building clearly straddled the border.

I found those VA maps in 2009 in a book at the library. I took pictures & have referred to them many times over the years. My ggf was born in Mercer Co., VA in 1860, but 3 yrs later, the family was living in WV w/out moving. Many family members lived in Montgomery, Franklin, Floyd & Giles Counties over the yrs. There were a lot of changes.

Hey! I went to high school in Madison Co, Va! ❤😃 Don't have family there, but I lived there! Lol. And Orange Co is where President James Madison lived. With good ole TJ just down the road in Charlottesville.

Great advice! Been doing genealogy work recently on family located in northeastern corner of Montana from 1907-1940. The original Valley Co there changed FIVE times from 1911 to 1920. It was first expanded (surprisingly, as it was gigantic to start with) and then sliced up in to two, then three, then four and ultimately five different counties -- in only nine years. Doing research for that narrow nine year period takes some careful attention to detail.

I found this out personally when I was researching my Father's line. His Ancestors came from Alsace, GERMANY in the late 1600's. During their time, Alsace was a part of Germany. Now, Alsace is a part of France. If I search for Alsace, Germany, I wouldn't get the right information, because Alsace isn't in Germany anymore, but, if I cite it as Alsace, France, I'd be wrong. I definitely had a fun time with that.

I didn't know about the Wiki pages to find information on the counties of a particular state. Thanks for sharing this information! I've been stuck with trying to find information in Ohio and maybe this will break down some of those walls.

Hi Amy, I wasn’t sure if I should ask you or not, but do you have any videos on how to index?
@AncestryAimee Жыл бұрын
Never hesitate to ask. I don’t. That’s a good idea. FamilySearch has some instructions on their website though.
