Though it seems implausible that Russel resorts to advanced mathematics to catch the tenis ball, that leaves a mystery. Saying he just puts the mouth where he thinks the ball will be is a true but shallow answer. Why he is most often right while Gilbert is not if there is no algorithm behind? Saying just that is effect of the background knowledge won't do it. Somehow that knowledge needs to be converted in the firing of the right neurons at the right time. I believe the most likely response is that Russel recognizes repeated spead and trajectory patterns from the past experience as, and is able to interpolate solutions for intermediate cases. But you still need some kind of algorithm to organize that.
