This video just confirmed that I have a 1972 SS15. I have owned it for around 45 years and not used it for the last 25. I just can't bear to sell her. Thanks for the video and the memories.

Wonderful video! Brings back good memories. I'm a wheel horse guy but I've owned a few Seaes garden tractors. Amazing machines! I had a beautiful blue and white SS12. Had a push blade that was never used, mower deck, chrome hub caps, wood grain dash, cigarette lighter and the original sears tires. Such a tough little tractor! Better times back then. Now everything is plastic or paper thin or over complicated for no reason and can barely pull their own weight! Over priced and can't even make through the warranty period without falling apart!

I worked in the factory that built sears tractors from 1966 to 1969. Really well built. Someone locally is selling a 1966, was thinking of restoring it.

@@turbinepower77 Yeah is was a Roper Factory Roper is the manufacturer of all roper and sears tractors. The Sears brand is just a distrubutor.

@@cosmintudor503 I'm going to say that they were built originally under the "131" model prefix when it was Roper and then when Roper and Rally merged, they were built under the "917" prefix, which eventually became known as American Yard Products.

Very neat to see all of the tractors. Recently my dad bought a 1967 Suburban 10, and it's been really neat to work on with him. Had to replace all the belts, replace the brakes with required us to pull the transmission, replaced the transmission fluid, had to fix up the mower deck. Right now all it really needs is a new battery so that you can actually use the starter. Apart from things like rusted bolts it's been pretty easy to work on. It now drives really well. The motor runs great, and did since we bought it. The 66-68 Suburbans are some of my favorite looking tractors

This spring I retired my 71 SS14 from mowing. I said I would on its 50th birthday. I found a Hustler Zero Turn , and 49th seemed like a good retirement party. Every time I would mow I gave the deck a few pumps of Hi Heat grease. Finally a couple years ago I had to order new bearings for the hubs. My yard is 2 farm yards that is mine and my Mother's. So it's a huge undertaking and the SS14 took the abuse for years with only an engine rebuild every so many years.

Almost got a 70 some thing Sears had big motor on it twin wasn't much wrong with it back in 1988 first job I ever had guy work for had it at his house set for 4 or 5 years just caught my eye cause it was largest lawn tractor I had ever seen at the time
@gregoryclemen18702 жыл бұрын
I worked on a lot of those tractors, the single cylinder engines were cast iron tecumseh's, and the twin cylinder engines were aluminum( cast iron bore) onan's, and the gear boxes were made by peerless , division of tecumseh. these units were well built, and easy to work on, and were designed to be repaired , not thrown away!!!!!
@rodm583011 ай бұрын
Any idea how I can get ahold of a legible wiring diagram for a 10xl. Mine recently lost its spark.
@gregoryclemen187011 ай бұрын
@@rodm5830 , there will not be any wiring diagrams on line, being back then ,everything was in printed form( tecumseh got out of the engine business before the internet took off). this engine was either points or solid state ignition. both styles were shut down by grounding the primary line. if you can get a hold of a repair manual on the single cylinder tecumseh engines, that information will be located in chapter 5 section 1. also, do not feed 12 volts to the ignition system, this will destroy all component parts of the ignition system.. I would be more than happy to step you through the problem, let me know if the engine has points/ solid state ignition
@victoryfirst287811 ай бұрын
I can tell you this was a video time travel for me Sir. I used and repaired most of these tractors for myself and most of my neighbors. Back in the day sears garden tractors were everywhere. Giving most users memory that has not faded. I wish I had the opportunity to have meet the two men who started Sears and Roebucks company. They must of been super visionaries. Today we have nothing as great as we had years ago. Just tin can tractors with plastic gearboxes. I would bet if the visionary men were revived from the grave they would shoot the corporate CEOs, PERIOD !!!

One more thought on these old Girls. I had rebuilt the big cast iron Briggs and Stratton 14 several times in it's 49 year lifespan. The last time of having it bored , sleeved , and new position , complete parts rebuild kit , I could have built a hi performance dragracing engine. It again got to the point of having to add oil to it before finishing mowing. I wasn't gonna rebuild this engine again. I picked up a Harbor Freight 212 Honda Clone. Made a spacer block to put the crankshaft In the exact same spot. This engine exceeded my expectations. It pulls the 46 inch deck like a champ.and uses a small fraction of the gas as that big Briggs. I did have to find and mount a big heavy pulley on the shaft because if a huge clump.of grass , or if you dropped the clutch too fast you would kill it. Probably a Ballanced harmonic balancer off a Small Block Chevrolet would be the perfect solution for a flywheel. I know the purest are gonna hate this . I didn't submit it to them. This is to the folks who have these machines to use and want them totally dependable for $100 , and can clean the carburetor blindfolded with only a 10mm wrench , zero points , $10 for a complete carburetor or ignition coil should you leave it out and they go bad. This could be a great option for the person who has one with a set of plows with a bad engine to start getting use of it. I have a Sears Custom that has had a blue Clone engine on it for 20 years that has a set of solid forklift tires on the back with chains bolted in them for traction that gets used to pull a bottom plow inside backyard fences , and the wood splitter in really RUFFFFF woods.

Thanks for the video, i have a suburban, but i can't remember if it's a 10 or a 12; but it's the one with the metal screen in the grill, plus it has the id tag on top of the frame, around the gearshift pattern, AND it's so faded out/off thats it is NOT readable no longer. All it needs is a drive belt, that's all, and without the model number, it's impossible (around here) to get the proper belt.
