Hey, I personally use Polytrol for re-shining plastic, it's an Owatrol product.

You should check the fuel hoses from the top of the tank. If they are the same age as the car it is possible that they are leaking. There is a inspection hatch (or two) in the boot for accessing the hoses and the sender unit.

Its only at full tank, so that rules supply and return hose out at least... :) My guess is leaking gasket on sender unit or rust pinholes :)

You do realise that giving it a polish will add 10 - 20 Km/h to the top speed! But seriously, it's looking much better, good job Seppo! I had a car in the same colour, that paint went the same. After some light cutting and a good wax polish it looked like new again.

Fuel consumption will get better. I drove a CX Break with 2.5 engine on LPG and it did for sure 8 km per liter LPG. So on petrol 9/10km/l must be possible

Because you have a GTi with catalytic converter the compression ratio is also extremely low. 7.5 to 1, compression ratio is linear with the efficiency so by skimming the head it may be already a bit better on fuel. But i think you should get a lot closer to 10l/km then you did now, also in my experience the fuel vaporises if the tank is not sealed properly. Maybe if you drive more km in a shorter time it will be more economical. Hope you don't sell the CX soon, the feeling of it is very special. Such a stable car. If you drive another car for a while I think you will long back for the CX! I understand it may not be the best car as a daily driver. I will soon try it too with a 500 euro CX GTi.

It's interesting that you mention the lower compression ratio, I had not realised this was different. I have a UK specification CX GTi but with the ZF automatic (strangely that was standard specification in the UK) but this also means it does not have a catalytic converter. I find I achieve over 10km/l in daily use and 11 on longer journeys. I often wonder how that could be improved with a manual transmission. I have to say though considering I am not a fan of automatic transmissions generally, it does suit the CX well.

I had once the same problem with the gear shift mechanism on a XM. A quick and dirty solutions was to tie the to arms together with a wire, so they can move, but not disconect.

A crack in the fuel tank can be repaired with aerospace fuel tank epoxy - plastic or metal.

Even if you don’t care about appearence, a shiny car looks so much better, use less fuel and even rust less. You HAVE to fix the fuel tank - simply because it’s not safe having a leaking fuel tank… so looking forward to seing you either replacing or fixing it asap!

Fuel is leaking from rubber tubing on top of the tank and maybe rubber part of filler neck. Both are available new for reasonable price. (i've changed them recently)

Finally, the shinyness appears!!!! Thanks for this revival of my favorite car(I own one also but 25 Rd Turbo diesel 1984) and clearly, they are french in all meanings! worses ans betters! enjoy the road because I don't think there is a more comfortable car to drive even on awful roads. It was a super saga!

Looks WAY better. Looks like someone loves it now. Friend has a series I CX C-matic in red. I have had a drive of it which was interesting. Basically a clutch less manual. Being only 4 speed it revs. too hard at highway speed though.

The CX looks way nicer now! Maybe you could go for a rust stopper on those small points. And the leaking could be where the electric pump is, if it's like the ones we usually find in most cars nowadays.

It's a lovely colour under the muck! How gorgeous would that have been as a new car! I almost bought an '86 Turbo in the early 90s for £600. It was absolutely perfect but I was put off by potential running costs and ended up with a BX GTi instead

The same happened to me when I brimmed the tank of my Cinquecento Sporting to the max. Took about 150 miles worth of driving to get rid of the stench of unleaded. When is the next Citroen Visa GTI video, coming? 👍🏻

6:50 7.5km/L are just 13.3 L/100km or 18 mpg (us), you may save good fuel if proper new lubricants are serviced onto your engine and gearbox. You started with 20w50, while is supposed to be 15w40 API-SL API-CF (just like french oem spec HTX classic 15w40) and gear oil is supposed to be 75w80 gl-4 (Total/Elf has it), not unknown 35 years dark smelling flurry that is probably there or some 75w90 or 80w90 tractor like gearoil from some old service. But good thing is you can go back to oem or better than oem compliant lubricants, better suited for your climate: Total/Elf (sorry but is and was oem provider, not realted or interested) has 75w80 gl-4 for your car still on sale and also 5w40 900 evolution API SL/CF and newer MB, VW, etc. ACEA A3/B4 etc. or 10w40 or 15w40 HTX Classic (mineral) or 15w40 (synthetic tech) and some other 5w40 sporti (acea a3/b4 api cf/sl). I'm sure you your fuel economy will go at least near 8.5Km/L or below 12 L/100km or almost 20 mpg. Synthetic newer oil on you API spec will have cleaning agents, high temp protection and additives just 40 years more advanced and actually clean and make it run better with time. just the contrary than using newest gasoilne that may be good for cleaning injectors, chamber pistons valves etc. but the E5, E10 etc as you may find on the pump may not be the best to put. No need for old SUPER, leaded or additives I guess, but ethanol is not best if not ready or very old fuel system, gaskets, etc...

Fuel consumtion is not great but not as bad as your figures. Highway cruising should be somewhat under 1l/10km. City driving is considerably worse.

7:45 How sure you're your car is still MOT (TÜV) compliant, raod worthy and insured after you claimed it has a fuel leak (of volatile gasoline, liquid and vapors) and you don't mind to repair it? Gasoline leaks may end in fire most of the times. Probably electric overload or bad earth would be riskier...but wait your old car can have electric "leaks" just for being old and fuel one. Spark + fuel +air = Bang!

Im not sure i was clear about it in the video.. its not leaking unless its completely full.. and even then it leaks very little. I am going to fix it somehow.. Just need to figure out how...

@@SeasideGarage I have exactly the same problem - leaks only when full and then stops leaking when about 12 to 15 litres fuel are out. Fuel tank itself looks good, I suspect it is the breathing tube (broken/torn/brittle, disconnected) or the filling hose (broken/disconnected). Please let us know how do you solve this!

it may be some Peugeot 206 part fitted in there, they came almost stock with a fuel leak only happening at roundabouts if LHD countries, there were two fixes, not turning left or live in a RHD country. jokes apart, to me it seems amazing how you can "rescue" such old unused cars with fuel problems or rusty fuel tanks from outside and inside in such cold (prone to condensation) and salty environment you're.

21 mpg is crap.(7.5 km per litre) My wife has taken her diesel manual car (60mpg plus) temp. of the road due to the green washing lies and BS linked to the London ultra low emission zone , which is now expanded to the entire greater London area, equivalent to 5% of Belgium and holding 8% of the UK road network - ! Replaced with a petrol car with a straight 6 engine and auto gearbox returning 22 mpg.! This petrol car is deemed as "acceptable" by the Stasi mayor,the diesel "unacceptable" even though both cars have passed the British government road worthy test. Similar BS and green propaganda hypocrisy will be coming to Copenhagen soon -
