Good that the bearing came pre greased. It's a machine that injects the grease I worked at Volvo in Torslanda. I did many different things there. But For about 3 months I was stationed at that robot that assemble the axle that you pulled out. We made 1200 on a 8 hours workday. Every day they (quality control) took a few samples of the bearings and weigh them. If the weight was not within tolerances the machine was repaired or calibrated. Production was placed on hold until fixed. Under no circumstances were we allowed to press in the grease ourselves.

@@SeasideGarage it might sound impressive. That they come out and measure 5 bearings a day. Sometimes 5 in a row and other days at 3 different occasions. Robot was not smart. No warning light for partially filled or no grease at all. The partial is the hard one to detect. Since the bearing looks greased. Remember this was 1987. So today it's something else. Also there were a lot of axle repairs due to no grease or not enough grease. I don't remember exactly but we are talking about 100s of repairs. Just like when they decided to run the assembly line with no engine in car.

@@SeasideGarage I should clarify a little. The grease machine was operated by a human. Next to the robot. The machine spitted out greased bearings. Then the operator had a vertical tube to stack the greased bearings for the robot. I think it held like 25 or 30 bearings. So if this operator didn't do his job properly and visually checked them, before putting them in the tube. Nobody else would. Hence partially bearings were the difficult ones.

@@SeasideGarage The bad thing is I'm not there anymore. The good thing is that I'm not there anymore. When I was there it felt good to work there. I just called an old friend who still works there. He said "same same but different". Volvo car is Chinese owned but I think you already knew that. I remember that the danes used to remove the badges from volvos. Like if you had a DL so nobody would know you had the cheap model. I don't know how many badges I took home from Volvo. Like GL and GLT badges. Hot commodity in Denmark at the time. I also took home the 240 real wood trim (interior) that only went into cars to Belgium. I still have that at moms place. Maybe put it on ebay when I get home.

That is a very nice press - I want one! But I want a lift more... It's fun to see the differences in engineering. I watched your video on the front bearings - on a Mini, you actually torque it quite hard, something like 200+Nm, and then you loosen it until the castellated nut lines up with the pin hole in the driveshaft. Very different to hand tightening the bearing :)

Yea thats very interesting to see different approaches to enginering.... Im always a bit nervous when dealing with hand tighten hubnuts..... it just feels so close to loosing a wheel... haha!

Did you check the drive shaft bearing as someone else suggested? It is a common problem and cheap to fix. And update would be nice.

Great Volvo 240 videos. Have you checked the prop-shaft bearing? Thats where the vibrations could come from. That being said, I had a similar issue some weeks ago. It turned out that the transmission mount was badly worn which caused the transmission/engine to shift about 2cm towards the rear. This caused some excess pressure on the diff which resulted in that whining sound. I changed the transmission as well as the engine mounts and It is all fine now. That being said the diff oil seal needs to be changed now. It leaks :(

Thanks! Actually i made another video same day as this where i discover (by help from others) that it as the universal joint on the propshaft nearest the diff that had a seized bearing... :) I got it free again, but im going to change it soon.. Shame about the leaking diff.. Should not be to bad to change should it? :)

Very clear videos. One question - at the beginning you said there is little play in and out. Was there a difference after bearing replacement? I did all the same way, but i feel the same quite significant play in the axis as before (~0,5mm). Is it normal? Thanks
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I think that some play is necessary to avoid it binding up.. But I am not sure what is "to much".... But if they aren't noisy I think you should be alright. :) Thank you!

I realised that the bearing assembly has that play itself. So it can not be other way. Some of the old bearing cylinders were rubbed to the crescent. But I still have that annoying vibration after bearing replacement. So next in the line are the kardan ujoints. Tak, held og lykke..
