Someone had neglected periodic valve adjustment and the valve was weakened by hot gasses from combustion. Then it finally cracked and a chunk went loose into the exhaust. That used to happen very often with this kind of engines. They are really robust but require such tedious procedures like valve adjustment and people often don't do them on time. And here you go, there's your broken engine.

S21 is a pretty simple engine. You can do head removal in like 15 minutes. What's more interesting, you can still buy brand new parts for this engine. New cylinder head is between 1000 and 3000 PLN (240 - 700 EUR).

Yeah it really did look like that. If the valve lash is also excessive, that count point to a bent valve or a broken/partially dropped seat. Whatever it is, the head is gonna have to come off.

I had a problem at work. An i remembered one of your videos. And i think i more or less repeated your test for it. I had an engine that would run but as soon as you stopped it. And left if for 10mins it wouldn't restart. So i attached a fuel line and a temp supply, and quite rapidly watched the fuel go back to the tank. So non return valve gone. Can't remember on what vehicle you did this.

These things can last ridiculously long when kept in somewhat of a regular maintenance cycle; there is one in my small hometown that runs and drives fine after 60-70 years it's a light blue/light cyan colour in damn near pristine condition (aside from a few dents) and occasionally is still used to transport things when needed
@SuperMAZ00710 күн бұрын
Actually if the valve is broken that means the broken pieces had to end up somewhere? Probably out of the exhaust cause don't see any scuffs or scoring on the pistons. Hopefully the valve seat is ok so if you do a valve job this thing is good to go. Probably the nicest Zuk out there. These cars went into the crusher in my region around 2000s beginning. High fuel consumption and could not compete with cars that came from West-Europe.
@projectartichoke10 күн бұрын
I wonder if it could have started as a crack (manufacturing defect?) and then, from continued use, burned away. I sort of doubt it because the area of missing metal looks cleaner than the rest of the valve. But, I have no experience in such things.
@SuperMAZ00710 күн бұрын
@@projectartichoke I think in this case one of the exhaust valves was bad from the factory. The more i look at it its a clean brake off. A lean running engine would have different valve chatter on the edges. Zuk engine is based on a GAZ M20 engine that the Polish engineers turned into a overhead valve engine.

Well, can't blame the spark plug wires for that knackered valve, though does make me wonder what could cause that sort of damage, but sometimes stuff just breaks prematurely because of flaws when manufactured I suppose... :)
@kosir12349 күн бұрын
valve not sealing causes that. running lean and burning oil helps to make it burn faster too

Reminds me of exactly the problem I hade with my 2001 skoda fabia with a 1.2 3 cyl, engine,,The HTP engine,,,Great little engine,,Only had 69hp,, But was so much fun,,Just wanted to rev all the time,,,Problem was they all suffered with burned exhaust valves,,Almost always on the middle cyl,,The car was 10 YO by the time this happened and had 285k kilomitors on it,,Did a compression test on it,,The other pistons had 150psi on both but cyl,2 had 50psi,,It would have cost more to fix than the car was worth,,,Compared to the junk they call new cars today,,,I would have my skoda back in a second,,

Is this a case of an engine designed for leaded fuel being run on unleaded causing valve seat recession which eventually caused a broken valve ?

Id say, no... its a aluminum head... those always have hardened seats and will cope with unleaded... (some disagree! but I have had no issues)

Overhaul the cylinder head. Bring it to a proper shop! Order piston rings as well as bearings and seals for the crankshaft and crankcase. This way you will end up not worrying. Best way is to overhaul the entire engine by measuring the bores and pistons. But these East Block vehicles are like Russian T34 tanks: they run even you lubricate them with sand aka being harsh on them. But just a newer engine from the scrapyard will be way cheaper, plug ‘n play, less hassle, run better, stronger, using way less fuel etc. etc.

What are the legalitys with swapping an engine in a car that's not formally imported yet? Surely swapping in a 2.5di out an old ford transit would make this a far more practical vehicle ?
@mfbfreak10 күн бұрын
But then why get a Zuk and not just a Transit? Imho the engine is the heart of a vehicle that gives it its special character. Even if it's a breathless agricultural soviet shitbox, it needs its proper engine. Same thing with removing the tube amps from a jukebox and putting in modern class D amps. Technically tube amps suck monkey balls with their limited low frequency reproduction and relatively high distortion - and horrible efficiency - but still, you'd be making a big mistake if you'd put a class D amp in a Wurlitzer with the bubbly lights...
@Gerrie_G10 күн бұрын

if you get the valves out of all of the cylinders and compare measurements via calipers, you should be able to do some cross checking on the internet to find something that may work for you. At the same time, I say all cylinders because, if you're in there, you may as well do them all for peace of mind, if one is going to grenade like this, who's to say another won't? it would also help your case later if you wanted to add a small turbo in with a humble amount of boost, if only for the sake of better fuel mileage at any altitude as the main reason. anything extra egged out of the engine at that point would be collateral, but that's going too far into the future, and, there's no knowing if this block can handle a turbo until after it's been torn down and inspected closer. I'm not sure what the laws are for adding a turbo to such an engine where you are in terms of that classifying as an unnecessary modification or not, but one would assume it would definitely make such a breadbox van more economical, so long as a proper waste gate is added, and it can be done legally of course. I've yet to see anyone do this for fuel economy reasons yet, everyone is so situated on getting every last drop of performance out of their engines when it comes to turbos... never ever to make an engine better on fuel costs.
