The problem with Korra's airbending training is that airbending is about freedom but she never experienced one. She was locked up in the compound throughout her childhood. And when she arrived at the republic city where she had a little hope of being free, Tenzin kept forbidding her from it.

I think the part that you are missing is that Tenzin and Tonraq keep making decisions for her without her input. They are deciding what's best for her and they have been consistently wrong so far. Tenzin held off on her training in Book 1. If she didn't disobey, Amon would have won. They both kept her secluded in the South Pole and decided she wouldn't do what every single Avatar before her would do and find her own teachers and learn about the world. When she said they couldn't do anything about the spirits, she's saying they can't keep telling her what she needs to in terms of spiritual training and what she needs to learn because they clearly don't know. Their way was wholly ineffective. She's not saying she did any better. She's saying the one person who did better is the one person they are refusing to let teach her. Her dad and Tenzin are just objectively taking the wrong approach and Korra is simply responding to them deciding they know how to be a better Avatar than she could if she was allowed to.

Exactly! This is what they miss. Aang during his time experienced a lot of decision making in the group. Katara, Soka, and Toph made sure what he decides to is respected. Even if it inconveniences the group one way or another. Korra since Season 1 never had that kind of sense of responsibility. Tenzen, her dad, and everyone around her is literally babysitting her. Telling her WHAT she should do, HOW she should do things, and WHEN. For the most part that's fine if it's suggestive, and not declarative (which would make it sound like they're ordering her) And for the most part that's what they are doing when communicating with Korra. I would say that the way the Monks (except Gyatsu) treated Aang, is how Korra is being treated now by them. They are disregarding her thoughts, her decision making, and believes what they believe is what's best when that's not how this whole "Avatar Training" works.

She needs to be told how to be a better Avatar. Until season 3 she sucks at her job. Twice, TWICE she got manipulated by a power hungry water tribe leader into helping them gain dominance over a group of people she was supposed to be helping in the first place. Like how did not get creep vibes from her uncle? Like at her cousins. She has no common sense whatsoever. To be clear, this is the problem I have with the writing and direction of this season which basically recycled plot points from season 1.
@Izanagi-Okami Жыл бұрын
@@griffinshaffer83 I don’t believe she needs to be told. Aang wasn’t told how to be an Avatar. He was told that he was the Avatar and he used wisdom from past avatars as well as knowledge to be the person he became. Korra on the other hand is stubborn but that doesn’t mean she needs to be told how to live her life. She was right to get training from Unalaq, as he was the only one with an actual solution to the spirit issue seeing as she was already slacking on drawing wisdom from past Avatars. Her only mistake was her lack of patience and hot headed “act first, think later”, attitude. which quite frankly never changes.

I know after iroh it’s easy to assume that Tenzin knows everything because he’s aang’s son and the “wise mentor” type but korra is justified in her feelings. Tenzin didn’t know how to handle the spirit problem here and the fact that they basically kept her imprisoned in the South Pole instead of letting her explore the world like every other avatar is messed up. The reason the animation looks a bit different (worse, let's be honest) is because episodes 1-6 and 9 of Book 2 were animated by a different studio. The original studio Mir was so tired from animating the first season that they initially declined to work on Book 2, but they eventually helped out for last third of Book 2. The rest of the show is all the OG animation studio.

I know we are used to the idea that in storytelling the progression of a character is linear and that people go through things and get better from then on, but I'mma tell you that going back and forth and up and down is a lot more realistic, especially for teenagers, with new stimuli that makes them go back to old habits and live out the emotions the way they have done most of their life rather than the newly learned lessons. Also, on the way she treats Tenzin, I have an interesting story to tell because I myself remember being really angry with Korra for talking to her master like that (she doesn't even call him master), and as someone who has been doing traditional martial arts for many years (Northern Shaolin and Taichi), loyalty and respect to your master is something that is of the utmost importance. However, recently I have been questioning a lot my master's methods, and it breaks my heart to admit that I believe I need another master now, especially because changing your master is not regarded as something honorable. I would never talk to my master like that, though, but I'm also not a teenager, and with the responsibility Korra has on her shoulders. I guess what I am trying to say is that I understand her seeing that another master has something else to offer her, and her arrogance and brattish behavior are also well justified in her age, personality, current feelings about being disregarded and the pressure she has as the Avatar.

@oq1106 Жыл бұрын
I do think you picked up well that they rolled her character-development a little back from the end of season 1 - basically to nerf their own overly quick development to give a satisfying ending to season 1. That being said, I don't find it super terrible. We've seen this, arguably done a bit better, in Zuko (and probably most of us in someone irl), that if a traumatic or drastic situation causes you to radically change your mind, it's not a stable situation that often wears off and people fall back into old behavior patterns because there was a lack of deeper emotional change. Is it annoying? a bit yeah. Should they have written it differently had they not (been encouraged to) prioritize an encapsulated season 1? also yeah. But I don't think its unrealistic. Thats sometimes what makes Korra annoying. Boy, does she do things people do. Sometimes I think they asked themselves: What do I get if I cage a powerful kid with a strong personality and position? And they went /all in/ on the absolutely correct answer: an emotionally immature, undersocialised brat unsure about the borders of their responsibility thats constantly trying to claw back any degree of control.

Honestly, as much as yall can say has Korra learned from what happened previously ask Tenzin the same question. As much as she's returned to her season 1 attitude a bit, Tenzin returned to his season 1 attitude about training then add on her father taking Tenzin's side & Mako to some degree, Korra doesn't feel shes being listened to or even appreciated as the Avatar. Her voice is getting squashed by those around her, where I dont think that was Aang's main goal for Korra or any future Avatar. Also everyone needs to understand that Korra is the most protected, privileged Avatar in existence. By trying to overly protect her, they've left her a bit socially crippled and unable to rely on herself because whenever she tries to voice something she gets denied.

To create narrative conflict they just make Korra act like a cunt to everyone. Season 1 was alright, I say s2 is where korra gets its bad reputation from

For my money season 2 is the worst in the franchise, at the same time it also has the two best episodes in the franchise.
