My new perspective on cleaning comes from something Mother Theresa said: "wash the plate not because its dirty or because someone told you to, but because you love the person who will use it after you." I realized that "the person after you" might very well be the next time you use that object. I was always a messy person until i married my husband. He had homes for everything and I saw how his life was easier because all of his Things were on autopilot. After 13 years im generally more tidy, but for SURE I will let tools and supplies build up over time while I'm working on a project. Ill clean it all up after im done.

I always say that having loads of space is the worst for a messy person because it allows to be messy without being "forced" to tidy up like in your case. I think sometimes having too much space can work against you so I would advice to designate each workspace for a specific task and for example I would have the big color pencil boxes on the table when working or next to me on the floor so when I finish that day I have its storage place nearby. You have to make things easier for yourself: everything has to have a place and it has to be close to where you usually use it. Also don't pressure yourself, if you know you will be working with the same supplies for the whole week it's not necessary to store them each day if you have the space for it. Also the appearance of a tidier space usually is fixed by clumping things together, piling them up or putting them on a container/tray. You can do this quick fix between deep cleaning times. About plants pothos and hoyas are really easy to mantain and maybe in your space a spider plant would also work. Also plants are easier to mantain if they are not scattered through space, group them depending of the watering times. And when pruning a plant use disinfected scissors better than a knife. Hope it helps =)

Yes!!! I already have the stations going but you're right, positioning where things go NEAR the stations is smart. I have a cart with many of my art supplies, so maybe I'll keep that near my desk. Keep all my drawing stuff on the drawing desk etc that should help a lot!!! When I get a chance I will begin assinging places for things. The most difficult thing is when things are created - doodles, paintings, trinkets that seem to appear etc. They have no place - perhaps I could have a little tray where things go when they haven't yet been assigned a place! All of these tips are so great! Thanks so much for taking the time. Putting my monsteras together immediately!!

What helped me was to give EVERYTHING its place to live, so I don’t have think about where stuff has to go and it became so quick and easy to tidy up. The initial organising and deciding where goes what can be a slow process, but when this is done - game changer. Also ‚don’t put it down, put it away‘ helped me as a reminder after the system was implemented. Thanks for the cozy video ❤

this is so smart! I am thinking of also having a tray for misc stuff that hasn't been assigned a place yet. It's hard to be a messy person AND love trinkets and being sentimental over objects and notes because I just want to keep everything but it makes it so difficult to keep things orderly!! Thanks for your hot tip

plant care talk 🌱 • what should I do about my fern? • do I re-pot? • best way to clean up the base? • can I cut it in half?
@pencilcritter5 ай бұрын
This was such a relaxing video! I'd say only repot if the fern is root-bound (meaning that the roots are too cramped up against the bottom of the pot) or if you notice that it's struggling to get enough water (constantly needs re-watering more than they recommend for ferns). To clean up the base, try twisting and gently pulling the dried leaves. They may come out easily! For all else, I'd ask a staff member at Bunnings- I always ask them about my plants and get such great advice :-)
@viscerotic5 ай бұрын
Fernon looks really good as far as I can see! He might need to be watered a bit more often, especially here in Aus during hot dry months. Depending on how cold winter was where you are and how much shorter the days got, the dead fronds may be a completely normal sign of the plant entering dormancy for winter, and he should start throwing up fresh green ones during spring as it gets warmer. You can absolutely split him up at the base with the edge of a trowel and divide him into 2 or more pots, and picking those last few dead branches off as you do that should be fine :) A haircut, dividing, and then a good thorough watering should treat him well.
@SeriouslyCreative5 ай бұрын
I always try and envision the environment in which a plant thrives. For ferns, it's a damp, warm rainforest. Meaning it probably needs a lot more water and little to no direct sun. Just cut off all the brown bits and ask someone at bunnings for some more advice!
@SeriouslyCreative5 ай бұрын
Oh, and also when you water plants it's best if you can do it in a sink so the water can drain properly and give it a good drench, because that way the roots are getting oxygen. A big water once a week (or whatever the plant needs) compared to a dribble every day is way more effective at hydrating the roots and soil. 🌱

It's hard work for me to keep our house clean every single time but what truly helps me is to organize everything, declutter what I don't use (that I don't love) anymore... and make sure everything has a home. because when our things have their proper places, whenever we'd do work and our stuff gets cluttered, right after it'll be easier to clean because you know exactly where your things go and you just pur them back there. that's how I keep everything tidy.... hehehe hope this helps! would love to see a deep clean, organization and declutter video from youuuu hehehe

The tip that helped me the most with cleaning and organizing my messy space was to use a laundry basket or something similar. I would go around the room and collect anything that didn't belong there, putting it in the basket for organization later. This way, you can quickly make a room look tidy. Afterward, you can go through the basket, find each item's designated spot, and put it away ☺ hope this helps 💕

What helped me building a habit in cleaning is setting timers for everything. If I don't feel like cleaning up I just set the timer to let's say 15min and try to clean just for 15 mins. Most of the time it helps me to just get motivated to do more. And if I don't feel like doing more, at least I cleaned for 15mins which is better than nothing :D Sometimes it feels like a little game to see how fast I can do stuff and it keeps the dopamine kicking. This way I can also build the trust in myself that cleaning really does take only 15 mins, which again helps making it a habit. Also I'm trying to keep my desk area safe by tiding it up every evening before I leave the studio. It's also some kind of ritual for me to end the work.

I guess the “Wild West” of it, where you thought you could just share and say anything without any consequences or rewards. It was for fun and that was it. I remember posting a lot on Deviantart back in the day, but now I mainly do Instagram and Tiktok with a little bit of KZbin when I remember to film a vlog. I feel like everything used to be a bit simpler and now people really overthink how to be 'perfect' on SoMe and try to optimize for the algorithm. It feels like half of my feed at this point is 'coaches' telling you how they've cracked the code to virality, it's loosing it's fun. I enjoy sharing things online and love reading comments etc, but the pivot to video content has added an extra step that, although I really enjoy filming, is another step removed from the art I actually make full time.

I started with instagram. I’m so over it now. It’s so ego-centric for me when posting. I don’t like the version of myself that posts on instagram. As a consumer, instagram gives me emotional whiplash since you’ll go from a funny video of a cat to a video of a child sick in the hospital.

i started using instagram in 2014. social media has become much more ad-heavy, specifically with short-form content creators doing ads. with short-form content especially, i definitely gravitate towards creators with specific and pleasing visual aesthetics. i sometimes feel as though i see a lot of the same stuff over and over again, especially famous old tumblr posts reposted to instagram. i feel as though social media is a net positive thing, especially for creators and people who want to learn, but since algorithms have improved it has gotten more and more difficult for consumers to step away

I loveee spraying, wiping, and disinfecting too, but tidying just takes up sooooo much mental load! But for social media... biggest was probably myspace and tumblr in the beginning... I think my reason for using social media has always been finding like minded people or inspiration (art or music) which is great, but it always does come with the negatives such as falling prey into comparing yourself to others and the immediate gratification of a like or a follow. Still finding a way to use it more as a positive resource so many years down the line.

I can create chaos within minutes and it almost happens evry day. So I also try to tidy and clean every single day otherwise it will get overwhelming and I let things pile up for weeks - and then it is really no fun. So I put on a timer for 10 and 15 minutes any time in the day, put on music and just randomly start making order. 10 Minutes is so little time makes it feel a lot easier to keep my space mostly in order :)

You can actually shake ferns (aggressively) and comb through them with your fingers. It works really well. If their pot is not too big and if you let the dirt dry a big first it'll be lighter and easier to shake. May sound a bit odd but works really well from my experience. Social Media used to be a place I got get inspired and see new things. Now a days all the platforms just shows you what it thinks you want to see-- which means it doesn't work very well anymore because it's really hard to see something new and fresh.

I am always messy when making art, and only clean up after a project is completed. I hate dusting!!! but if things are a put away then I can do a quick wipe down of surfaces. The thing that brings me the most pleasure is mopping my wood floors (in the home, not the studio). I got one of those inexpensive wringer mops with a bucket that has a spinner in it, fill it with hot water and some drops of essential oil and mop away. The floors feel so silky after that the pleasure is doubled! Also I'm more motivated to clean if I have a "deadline" (like if someone is coming over and I say they might look in my room even though I know they most likely won't) or if I get a reward of some kind. Hoping to at least clean a little more often, so I'll be checking back in the comments for tips too 😂

Honestly a big one for me was hearing someone say “don’t put it down, put it away” and also just holding myself accountable. I’ve realized unfortunately being clean is a huge sacrifice, you’re sacrificing time and energy, and it really just depends if being clean is a priority to you or not. In your case, you’re working on a million things at once and you really care about what you do so cleanliness took the back burner, and that’s okay sometimes! But it can begin to affect you if it’s on the back burner for too long.

I am not a tidy person, and I also have the ADHD object permanence issue, so if something is in a drawer or box that I can't see it, I forget it exists and if it is something I use a lot and it's supposed to go in a drawer or box, I will never put it away. So I designed my studio around having all my most used supplies out on or around my desk, with specific spots for everything. Stuff I don't use daily goes in the closet or drawers. I also minimized the ability for things to stack on top of each other inside drawers or shelves by using shallow trays and flat file-type drawers. I have a tray for "active" supplies, the colored pencils and paint jars I'm using for a current project. That way I can still get it all out of the way quickly, but still be able to find everything I need when I get back to the project. I also have this hanging shelf thing that I stick papers and sketchbooks that I am actively using in to get them out of the way. Since it's hanging in front of my face I can't stack stuff on it. This set up has been really great because I can tidy up in a few minutes if I need to. Also, my day to day supplies are relegated to my "desk zone", so I can clear my desk with out having to put things away all over the room or touch any other "zones" if I don't want to. Boxes and shelves are always too deep or tall. I also keep a trash can under my desk now, and I have a jar for pencil shavings. I also have a dedicated shop vac for the studio so I don't have to go hunt down a vacuum, although taking it out of the closet and plugging it in is sometimes too much friction for me. Shop vacs are great cuz they rarely get clogged and have a lot of suction, but stick vacuums are so convenient. A lot of organizational tools on the market are not made with art supplies in mind or for non tidy ppl in mind. TLDR trays are my best friends.

I feel ancient for saying this but I would say that my first social media platform was Livejournal. I don’t know if that counts cos it’s a blogging platform but since you mentioned Tumblr. I was also toggling between LJ and Tumblr when Tumblr first came out. Then it was Facebook and started Instagram when it first came out 2011-12? What i love about it is that I get to be my most authentic self. What I don’t like about it now is how dense social media is that it feels like I’m sharing things to the void. Recently I read an advice about how in the wake of a very competitive social media landscape, it becomes more important for artists to get out there - think about how artists in the past did their own outreach before social media. So I’m quite obsessed with that now. Planning for events and opportunities to booth now. (But as an introvert, this is soooo tough!)

What has helped me in terms of cleaning (im still very messy but sometimes Im able to clean haha) is to not work until I am fully cooked in the brain or not work until the moment I have to leave to do whatever I have to do after work. Just stop half an hour before you need to, put on a podcast and just clean. I find it cleans my thoughts too. I was a tumblr girly and on deviantart. I loved being able to write more on those platforms, but I did really like the social component of Instagram (though I was hesitant to get it at first). Now IG makes me feel worse I think, after Ive used it. I think it is because of the fast paced content, feels like my heart rate increases. Also because I use it both for creative inspiration and social connection, it feels weird. I can trick myself into going on IG because I want to see what my friends do, but I end up in reels. I use IG for what I use pinterest for, but using pinteres actually helps. Though there are a few content creators on IG that actually make me feel better/inspired - mostly people that have a distinct visual language and do what they want to do.

You always talk about social media so positively so would loooove to hear a deep dive on your thoughts. As for cleaning tips, one is the "2-min rule". If I can do it in 2 minutes, I'll just do it (e.g., put the dishes in the dishwasher rather than just leaving it in the sink, clearing my desk after work, putting my laundry that's been folded in the hamper away). And the other one, that I've seen someone else mention that I think I got from Fran was "do it for future you". I'll buy the milk today so that the me tomorrow can have it with cereal. Clean my space today so that tomorrow me can start fresh. Good luck!! Tidying/cleaning is tedious lolol

My tips for non tidy folks is just tidying up when you’re done working on something for the day! Put things back in drawers/ brushes back in jars etc. then you also set up future you (you tomorrow) up for success to go into a clean space! Then you don’t have to have a day or days to clean.

Love the video, perfect to listen to while tidying up my house :) I've just accepted that i have way too much stuff and need to take a day every other week to get everything in shape again. Although the saying 'dont put it down, put it away' that i'm seeing in the comments will help me out as well hopefully. Concerning social media im having difficulty making it a space that benefits me, instead of big cooperations.. Im only on instagram and youtube, trying to cut down on my instagram time. what also helps for me is being interactive? As in, instead of consuming lots of content without any feedback I now try to watch/etc with the knowledge that a human being made the content im watching. Interacting in the comments makes me feel engaged and slows me down in a good way. Thanks for the video, im excited to see what your book will look like in 2025!

Tumblr was a good time. It was a good place to blog out a creative process. But like Fernon the platform was neglected a bit, went rampant with the dark corners of the internet. It ended up not a nice place to be. I no longer post there but I return from time to time to see what people are posting. It's cleaned up a lot, but it's much more filtered. I don't tend to document my process anymore.. even on insty. Tumblr was like a diary of my learning process and not many people were doing it (resin casting). Back then if you wanted to learn something, you just had to figure it out yourself. Now you can just look it up. It's equally helpful and unfulfilling. As for cleaning, I hate it and only end up doing it when my workspace becomes too much of a mess that I can't find anything or its impeding me working. Usually when I go to start a new project.

The thing that's helped me a lot is a combination of having a place for everything, and trying to store things where I use them. So then stuff doesn't go wandering and I don't have to go wandering and get distracted when I'm putting stuff away! I also hate cleaning.... And hate planning time to clean.... Honestly the thing that motivates me is having people over

Started on Deviant Art & IG and how do I feel about it now? Hmm, kinda bummed honestly. I feel like it’s hard to build a genuine community on IG now. I’ve read a lot of people are increasingly frustrated with the algorithm. Cleaning tips: music really helps or a podcast! Gotta be in a good mood and pre-plan cleaning time to get any quality deep cleaning / decluttering in :)

1:30 Could you share post-publishing? Might be a long time to keep footage but then you can scratch that itch and the audience can see a BTS 4:15 Relatable, my plants dying is also a health reflection for myself I really love vacuuming and hate dishes and laundry. If I do 10 min clean ups I have a much easier time with the routine, daily timer-go- and stop when the timers done First social media was myspace and I taught myself how to code for profiles and then it ended and since I was coding so young and no longer frequently its a skill I've lost over the years

Thank you for giving a little motivation to clean through my art things after watching your video. I wish i had a good idea h0ow to get from the chaotic and messy mind to a cleaner work place4...but yeah...no. :) But i have an idea for your plants. I gave mine Seramis instead of normal earth and a little sign, on which i'm able to see if they need water. That ist...once a week or so. Once a month i give them some fertilizer from the same brand and that thing is so simple. All my plants are looking so good without much to do...maybe that can help you keeping yours healthy too without to much time. As for social media...sometimes it's such a gorgeous thing because you get inspiration, feel connected to other artists while on other days it's overwhelming with to much perfect pictures...so i really appreciate, that you share the process with your gorgeous chaotic colorful personality :)

That old tech isn't sun-damaged in the traditional sense. It's a chemical reaction to heat. You could keep them in a windowless basement, but if they create or are around a high enough temperature they will eventually turn yellow still. I can't comment as to whether newer tech will still do that. I worked in plastic manufacturing almost 15 years ago and at that point we added a UV additive to protect plastic from sun damage... but those items wouldn't just fade. They would crumble without the additive in it. But plastic has come a long way since even I worked in it. So it might not be as much of an issue today.

Now that I have you here.. In your opinion, how can I prevent yellowing of my scanner? Australia is pretty warm so maybe it's not preventable. Maybe I need to get a lighter coloured blanket at the very least so that it doesn't absorb so much heat?
@CheekyAdorable5 ай бұрын
@@furrylittlepeach Honestly I don't know. My hope is that modern tech is designed well enough that we won't see it without it being climate related. I collect toys and disassemble a lot of them to retro brite (a process that removes the yellowing) and I've noticed a much smaller amount of modern toys have issues with sun or heat damage. My Silhouette Cameos are both still white, my Eco-tank is still white, my keyboard is still... mostly white 🤣. I work at a tech refurbisher/recycler now and when I see batches of the same thing with a colour difference it's usually a user-related issue. My best recommendation would be to just keep up regular maintenance and make sure nothing is over heating.

hey bub! watching this vid and your last, can I suggest (ever so gently) that you consider looking into ADHD? Here are the things that resonated with me and make me think it fits you: 1. struggling with consistency but having no reason why - for me it feels like there is an invisible barrier between me and doing certain tasks, this is because my brain is not giving me dopamine for doing those tasks which can make them feel nearly impossible. 2. Your previous diagnosis' - I think I remember you saying something about OCD? not to say at all that's a misdiagnosis but I have an adhd and autism diagnosis and was previously diagnosed with OCD, it turned out that for ME that was just the rumination and head noise that comes with adhd which can sometimes feel like someone is playing about 4 podcasts in my brains at all times 3. finding it really hard to keep things clean but finding it easier with a novel tool - adhd brains are interest based so they find things they like really easy or fun and get a lot of motivatin to do that, but things they're bored by can feel almost impossible to do. I find "gamifying" cleaning and also leaning into the chaos of it not trying to do it in a certain order can be really useful 4. out of site out of mind - adhd brains absorb things into the ether, basically if you don't make information absolutely salient to them they will forget they exist because they struggle with object permanence, this can make it really hard to remember to use things you hide in a cupboard or clean things that aren't super visible to you. 5. hugely creative - many adhders love autonomy and are super creative out of the box thinkers, its not actually a deficit in attention but moreso an inability to regulate it, so for example, if you have a deadline based job that is highly creative and interest based you might not struggle to complete or focus on work for that, but could struggle with your executive functioning in the background which can look like not being able to look after personal hygiene or water plants. This makes it tricky because you can look like you're really successful and "high functioning" but can actually be struggling beneath the surface with tasks that feel harder to your brain. I feel there is more I could elaborate on but most neurodivergent folks know intuitively when someone around them is neurodivergent and my spidey senses are tingling here. I hope this is taken with the love it is intended and that it's not an overstep to suggest it but honestly from the outside nobody would have suspected I had adhd or was finding anything hard and yet a diagnosis and medication has been the absolutely most life changing thing for me and the moment of taking my meds for the first time was like "oh holy shit this is how easy it is to do things for most people? what???" love and support, lil x

Lol the saying on tumblr is that its become the best social media platform without actually becoming any better 😂 The lack of algorithm makes it good!! I don't want to be shown random shit all the time!!! I want to feel like part of a community by intentionally choosing to follow people and then interact with them

re: using social media. so i opened my first tumblr account in 2013 and didn’t start using it until 2016 (i was just passively scrolling on insta and felt an enormous pressure to keep up appearances between years lol) and when i did, i ended up following a lot of shit posters, ramblers, text-post writers and memers. i ended up gaining an outlook on social media that i really love and hold onto this day: this is MY playground. this account is MY patch of land and i’ll do with it as i see fit. i recognise that it’s probably mentality that probably originated from myspace but seeing that emulated by memers, artists and shit posters made me realise that you can have and keep a social media account where you didn’t perform and could just be yourself (the whole anonymity thing probably helped too lol). all i did was reblog things but they were things that made me laugh, inspired me or made me happy and i’m glad that was part of my foundational experience. even when i begin to take social media a bit more seriously and decide grow a community and a large following, i’d prioritise the parts of it that feel like self expression (i just gotta get brave first haha). my sentiment hasn’t changed one bit, i’d just find a way to integrate it in the next stage of my journey with my relation ship w social media. existing the way i did on tumblr, giggling at all the silliness and rebloggging it to my page was really healing. i discovered a lot of amazing and inspiring people and content that way, and i’m grateful. 😊❤

Social Media Ask: So my first social media was Facebook, I got one when I was in seventh grade. Its super nostalgic for me and at the time I think facebook at least within my school, which was very tiny, and with the supervision of my parents the whole thing was pretty PG and goodnatured. Instagram was like brand new once I entered highschool and was completely just people posting random heavily filtered photos and no one cared much about followers. I also had a fond spot for KZbin and KZbinrs which were my first influencers I really cared about, that probably was since middle school as well. So for me, social media is nostalgic, it can be helpful for some things, but I also think at this point it can be very stressful depending on how you use it and curate it for yourself. If you aren't manaaging the things that you see on your feeds, how you handle your followers if you have any, and who you stay in contact on them then they can kind of ruin your life. I think I have managed to create a positive social media relationship where at least 80% of it benefits me in some way positively and not negatively.

I'm 41 years old and I have been using the Internet since I was 16. I have used LJ, DJ, Myspace, Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook...last.fm...im probably missing a few. I have also been active as a blogger. I think social media feels more targeted. You mention anything and social media is telling you about it. I have cut myself off of social media on and off and every time I feel better for it. I have less anxiety. Honestly, I think the excuses people make for social media are just excuses. Social media doesn't connect us more unless you feel included and really you can find that same kind of satisfaction in real life and be less motivated to buy stuff you don't need.
