I discovered funeral doom 20 years ago by listening for the first time to 'Quiet these paintings are'. I'll never forget that moment, I finally found the missing piece to sing my tormented soul, to keep company to my inner. It was like my body was crying dark tears within my chest. My pain, it finally had a voice. Many years later, Shape of Despair is still my favorite funeral doom band. This album is a remark of their greatness.

I listened to SOD last night. Illusions Play. First time in awhile. Probably my favorite album by SOD. Curse Life was a meaningful and still is a meaningful song for me when it released. Pasi Koskinen vocals with SOD from 2001-2009 were amazing. The fact he fronted Amorphis with another vocal style, and same with Ajattra, showcased his talents.

I personally think that this album is way better than the previous one. They returned to the hooky melodies they were famous for in 2001-2004, the atmosphere is as well very dismal and tragic, as it used to be when they started. Great album indeed!!!

(I see woods, grey sky, a path, guiding to the higher unkown, that darkness at the bottom, the devil and angel rising in the middle and many more ... and than there is the woman, that summarizes all the darkness and mystery surrounding... drag you into the abyss and also able to guide you to higher grounds...) this is for me extra ordinary and resonates strangely on an emotional level.

This feels slow enough. I like this! Sometimes I theorize of a possible Doom Metal band that would be even slower and would make use of church bells and Russian octavists. Not them doing a death growl, but rather what they’d do for a funeral. It’d be Funeral Gothic Doom and it sounds awesome. This album inspired me to find something, some kind of concept to become even more intense. Hard to do though.
