This 2014 Seat Mii (Volkswagen Up! with a Spanish accent) makes a proper noise! But what is this city car like out on the Welsh valley roads?

I bought the Up version when it was new. I still have it. Nearly 100,000 trouble free miles and counting. 👍 It's _the_ poster child for the old saying "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow".

14:50 a liter of gasoline contains about 34.000kj of energy. 50 uk mpg is about 1 liter per 17km. A 200g bag of crisps contains about 4000kj. This means it does about 2km per bag of crisps, or 50boc/100km.

My Mom had a Citigo and it was a brilliant little car. The rear seat does have plenty of legroom - I'm 6ft3 and I could sit in the back behind my 6ft Mom. Autonomous Emergency Braking was only a £275 option and heated seats were standard on the Citigo Elegance. They're fantastic cars, they feel like a much bigger car.

I owned a little Mii 8 years ago. Was a great little car. Loved the thrummy 3 cylinder engine. It was red with a couple of go faster stripes over the bonnet, roof and boot. Stripes didn't exactly work but it was great fun! Definately one of my favourite cars I've owned as it was just cute 🙂

You can't buy a Mii or Citigo of any kind any more, the electric versions were on sale (in the UK at least) for roughly 3 minutes, which for me highlighted everything that is wrong with the car industry at the moment. These are great cars in petrol and electric form and are a rarer instance of VW getting it right.

Not enough profit in them, car manufacturers prefer you to buy more expensive cars instead which has a better profit margin.
@nstarmore
@nstarmore 2 жыл бұрын
@@khalidacosta7133 oh for sure but it used to be that the profit made from the fancier models paid for the city cars so you didn't have to pay inflated prices for something you didn't need (or want), so the more savvy amongst us could enjoy simpler cars at a reasonable price. How times change. Tbf it's mainly because of the hideous costs involved with EV development, so it's understandable just very sad
@khalidacosta7133
@khalidacosta7133 2 жыл бұрын
@@nstarmore Possibly, I think it might have been with the EU directives that car manufacturers MUST push down average fleet emissions to 95g/km. So these city cars were paid by (partly) the fancier models which had far higher emissions. With electric cars pushing down the average fleet emissions and car makers being able to turn a profit on the fancier models and EV's... it doesn't make financial sense. To this end, Fiat Chrysler were paying Tesla around £1 billion per year just for the emissions regulatory credits!!!

Owned one of these in its VW form for a couple of years. Great engine, seemingly unbreakable, spent many a country road totally flat out because they are so slow. Mine was specced great too, cruise control and AC among other things. Unfortunately at only 60HP and weighing over a ton, in base engine spec these are very slow. Never drove the 75PS version, but with the same torque figures I suspect performance is similar. TSI supposedly suitably peppy, but never had the chance to drive one. Ultimately got rid of it not because it was slow (I could work around that), but because the seat isn't comfortable for journeys of any length and the steering wheel does not have telescopic adjustment. That Garmin maps and more thing is also absolutely woeful and hardly ever worked with my bluetooth connected phone. Ended up upgrading to a sporty-ish Polo which still has cheap road tax, not as tiny, much quicker and a more pleasant place to be. The UPs and their derivatives are quite a clever marketing ploy because they're cheap enough to tempt in people (like me) who have previously shunned VW.

With a simple stage 1 tune, a sport exhaust and sport intake they can make around 85hp and are way more pitty than stock!

Hi, agree with most of your comments. Kerb weight is about 930kg, so less than a ton. I have the 75HP version, the extra 15HP is achieved by raising the rev limit to 6,200 rpm from 5,200 rpm, so makes no difference in normal driving. The worst feature IMO are the seats.

Performance definitely isn't the same in the 75, which I have, and I'd hardly call it slow, it tops out at 107mph. Yes, if you want to overtake on faster roads you have to make sure you're in the right gear, but I'm typically finding I'm wanting to go faster on country roads than everyone else. It certainly weighs well under a tonne, and I suspect the comfort issue is as much down to your build, as the seats, I regularly do 400+ miles a day in mine, I did so yesterday, in fact, and I do not get any comfort issues. It certainly fulfils its design brief, and is capable of crossing countries in decent comfort.

I bought a 2013 Up! with original sunroof for my wife and added a leather steering wheel and installed original cruise control. I also had it remapped from the original 60 HP to 75HP (On the dyno it was 67 original and 82 with the remap) Before the remap, you had to upshift during overtaking, as the engine would loose its breath. Now it does nearly 90 kph/ 55 mph in second gear, great for merging or overtaking on smaller roads. That's the only real difference the ramp made. A 90 HP TSI in similar condition costs twice as much used here in Denmark.

Yes! Give Miss HubNut her sports exhaust :D Also, ugh, Ford did that lack of a footrest next to the clutch pedal in the Fiesta too. The Focus has it, and it’s the same platform, and there’s room in the Fiesta for it, but it isn’t there. I think that must just be artificial differentiation between the models. And IIRC the Polo is the same platform as this, so maybe VW is doing something similar there? Make the Polo feel more of a “real car”?

Another fabulous HubNut production. My old VW 'move' up had a movable boot floor so you had a flat floor with the seats folded and I could get two full sized adults in the back. The max hp and torque were at max revs and the 75hp revved a bit further up than the 60hp. Apart from that they were pretty much the same.

Must resist.... The notion of putting a sports exhaust on the family Skoda Fabia with the same engine, it sounds immense... I do love the little MPI engine it does the job and i was a bit sceptical about it pulling the estate body but that scepticism has vanished, also driven a Citigo with the 60bhp version of this engine as well. Nearly bought a Mii before I got my Cactus but was annoyed that the road tax was twenty pound more than what I was paying on the family Skoda for the same engine! Great review as always.

I agree about VW quality. I still enjoy my 2002 Fabia. It's not exciting but because they use all the same VW parts bin stuff. It's lovely and easy to drive. Feels just like an A3 or Golf of the time. In regards to realibilty, the diesels are a lot better. The 1.4 16v in the Fabia is brisk enough, but it has had so many niggles. Electronics as well. The Passat we have is a diesel on 290k. That has been pretty faultless.

My second car is a Peugeot 108 1.2 Allure, and the 82bhp that the engine makes is pure bliss......weighing only 860kg the car zips along with great acceleration and sounds very good as well as the back box is mounted transversely at the back of the car. It encourages you to blip it and accelerate needlessly just to listen to the sound. I absolutely love the little thing I really do. So what with my VW Passat Estate for my Model Aircraft transportation and towing, and my little 108 for fun razzing about, I am a happy man!

Have the Citigo-e and it’s like driving a fun fair car! Have the larger battery and it gives you a range of 100-150 miles, depending on driving and mostly temperature. My wife use it as her work car and we fold the backseats then which in the Skoda give you a flat floor with a luggage divider. Usually take things to the tip also (have a foldable liner). The kids don’t usually complain and I find seats comfortable (longest drive in one go is about 100 miles). Do motorway speed brilliantly, 75 mph not a problem, very stable with the wheels in the corner compared to my old Opel Corsa.

Reg check suggests that's actually only the 60hp version... The 75hp was only on the top spec, so it would have heated seats and need to be an Elegance or SE L. That's a Toca and only available as a 60hp engine. The 75hp version is a fair amount livelier. I've had two VW Ups, a 75hp Club Up and a 90hp High Up TSi. Both brilliant little cars, the TSi was surprisingly nippy. I did 16k a year in each and they were both very reliable. Mine both had heated seats and cruise control, brilliant for a small car. Shame you had one with a silly exhaust and only 60hp, the higher levels are a lot better and they're usually quite a refund car.

That gives a very smooth running and a distinct engine note. Also the flywheel can be lighter which caters for nippier throttle response. I'm on my second Aygo now (1st gen B40 with 1KR-FE). Love it. Although I've not driven the Mii version of this car I have driven the Citigo version a few times but with the lower power version of the engine when my cars were in for service. They handled and drove pretty well considering the power and had a surprising amount of room for something that looked like you could fit in a ruck sack. The thing that I kept forgetting was to lower the parcel shelf after loading some shopping as it blacked out rear vision. My fault I know. I do remember the sound (or should I call it 'noise') system though. To put it politely it was suboptimal. Fine for speech but not great for music, it sort of sounded like an improved old telephone. For a town car that can be used for longer journeys they are great though. Just remember that parcel shelf. I never understood the Up version with that upticked rear window, that just restricted the visibility, I also never saw the point for the three door as you mentioned this could be 'interesting' in supermarket parking but I guess you should carry that ruck sack.

We have acquired (rather accidently) a second hand VW Up semi automatic Up 5 door in the last six months, 75 BHP with all the goodies: A/C, heated seats and cruise control. The semi auto box is almost impossible to predict and tricky to drive smoothly. Why did VW not put in a DSG box? Too expensive? Even a CVT from Nissan would have been ideal for this city car. But the engine makes up for all of this; it is zippy, revs easily and is more than adequate to keep up with city and motorway traffic. The interior is quite funky and this is a deliberate nod to the Fiat 500 which re-set small car funkiness a while back. All in all, a great small package but the car deserves a decent auto box !!

I sort of fancied the Up GTI but need more room than it offers and don't have road/drive space for a hobby car!

one design trend I dislike on modern cars is how deep the dashboards are and how far away the windscreen is from you. I feel much more connected to the car and the road when I’m closer to the glass, and I think it gives a better sense of where the corners are. I love old school defenders for this, you have barely 4 inches of dashboard!

Great video. Whilst we're on the subject of three cylinder city cars have you any plans to test a smart car? I recommend a 451 convertible. If your ever in Dorset mines available.

My Dad's Up is too high geared, so it doesn't sound happy at lower revs, labours quite a lot. He was so unhappy with his, he replaced it with another (don't ask!). Our family seems very unlucky with VWs and Audis. They seem to be very poor value for money, and not up to the quality, the price would suggest.

One of the cars I'd be looking at when it comes time to replace the Panda but a 5 door although I'm not a fan of the way the rear windows open.

I have to ask if you hold the key fob unlock and lock button down on this model do the windows raise and lower as it is a feature found on the SEAT cars because they are Spanish and hot weather proof, my Ibiza has this feature and its great in the hot weather we have as you can eliminate heat from the car before you reach it. Skoda versions may have a little ice scraper because of Czech Republic and cold weather.

I recently replaced my 2004 Skoda Fabia mk1, and looked hard at the Citigo, which was quite a tempting prospect. However, after some thought and a growing need to do more long distance travel for family reasons, I thought maybe something a bit bigger might be a better idea. For a similar price to some of the used Citigos I saw, I ended up buying a 2014 Skoda Rapid 1.2SE TSi. I'm quite impressed with it, economical with all the modern bells and whistles...things have sure come on with Skoda cars since 2004!

Do test the 107/C1/Aygo, too. My favourite small car trio, mostly because of the excellent Daihatsu engine.

Love the Thumbs Up at the start from Miss Hubnut! The exhaust noise is unique, but not as good as the raspy fart of a Morris Minor. It's a City car, a bit too small for me and many others here, not practical for a family, other than one with small children. I'm not sure I've ever seen one, Citigos and Ups! aren't that common, this Seat version is ever rarer, I'm not sure I've ever seen on on the road other than here. This is the precursor to the now common 3 pot 1 litre turbocharged small hatchbacks (slightly bigger than the Seat) on offer from the major manufacturers, although others have commented on their reliability not being as good as the bigger engined versions. Ok for driving around town and local journeys, but I wouldn't fancy a 200 mile drive from Manchester to London in one.

Seat is geared towards da yoof, Skoda is sensible cheap motoring, VW is the premium brand. The E up was marketed for Yorkshire I think

Higher end trims had a false boot floor to make it flat with the seats folded. Not sure if all models could have that though. Frugal little car, I got diesel-like economy and could forgive the lack of power with the noise you got from revving it.

I want one after seeing this! Didn’t know it was three cylinder. It seems like VW returned to the shape of the Lupo after making the dull Fox for a few years. Not surprised; the flatter, wider design is much cooler.
