Compromise would be my go to, and hopefully the passengers on either side would be civilized.

We got a little tip in the form of "negotiate", but I would have liked to hear you elaborate more on the solution. As for me, if the arm rests are free, I put my arms on them for a while and then after a lagom amount of time I remove them, to see if there are any takers (in other words: take turns). If no one else puts their arm there, I put them back after 20 minutes. I would never think to ask someone who has their arm on it, it would feel outrageous.

Logic suggests the most appropriate arm rest to negotiate for is the one belonging to the window seat passenger. They can lean towards the fuselage where as the aisle passenger will need to make room for the drink cart and other passengers traveling in the aisle. Also you might need to disturb the aisle passenger to make your way to the rest room, best to stay on their good side by being seen a generous and ceding the arm rest to them. I sure have thought about this quite a bit. 😊

Very good points. I wish we got insights like this from the etiquette expert content creator.
