It's regarded as the SECOND biggest play in this entire Super Bowl (obviously Butler's interception taking the top spot). What I really don't understand is how they didn't give Malcom Butler the MVP?!? It is literally the most important play in the entire game. Everyone wants MVP trophies to be some storybook romance nonsense, but Tom Brady really should have taken that trophy and handed it right over to him and said, "Here... you're the reason I have four rings, now... you deserve this..."

As a Bears fan, I'm glad I'm not the only one to know true heartbreak. This WAS one of the single greatest travesties in NFL history. Like you had Lynch and you were right there. @@johanstinson bullshit take
@raetekusu12 жыл бұрын
@@johanstinson I completely disagree, and I'm a Patriots fan. This wasn't bad playcalling by Wilson or Carroll, and it makes sense given the broader context. This was a play done to catch the Pats unawares and open up space for Lynch in the event of a non-turnover failure. Football is not as simple as it seems, so this is a bit of a lengthy breakdown, but bear with me. Get that whiteboard meme ready while I play devil's advocate. For starters, it's four-down territory. A FG gets the Hawks nothing. They have three plays to get in from here. There are only 30 seconds left in the game, and the Seahawks have 1 timeout. They *cannot* spike the ball at this point, and they do not have the time to run three consecutive run plays if they were to fail to get in. The Patriots just need to stop the short run game twice, at most. And they have, up until now. Lynch only has one TD, a medium yardage carry, not a short yardage situation. So they could gamble two run plays, or they could throw in one pass play that would stop the clock on a failed throw to get in one additional shot at the endzone. Do you want only two run plays, or two runs and one pass? On First Down, Lynch was unable to punch it in, and now *everyone* knows what's coming. You know it. I know it. A blind deaf comatose lobotomy patient knows it. Belichick knows it, and Carroll knows Belichick knows it. The Patriots had 7 guys stacked on the line to plug every gap, and two linebackers to fill in any gaps made by the O-line. The Pats defense had done a decent job of containing Lynch thus far. If ever there was a perfect time to throw a quick in route to man coverage behind the D-line, this is it. Second down is a "disposable" play, so to speak. It can be used to manipulate the defense for the next two plays rather than go for broke on this one, which is what Pete Carroll is doing. Which brings us to the play itself. Why a pass *here*? Why not give it to Lynch again and throw on 3rd down? In short, to open the D up for two more runs. The Seahawks were running a pick play that had worked every other time that year. Jermaine Kearse jams Travaris Cadet at the line, Malcolm Butler is stranded in the backfield but sprinting forward, opening up three yards of space for Ricardo Lockett to make a quick catch. In almost every other circumstance, that ball is overthrown, dropped, or caught for a touchdown. There was a 1% chance of critical failure. In any other typical outcome, either the Seahawks have got themselves a pass TD or an incomplete pass and now the Patriots have to stay honest and prep for another potential pass, meaning they can't commit numbers to stuff Lynch. Otherwise, Wilson reads the defense and can run two RPO plays based on whether the defense is still plugging the gap or sitting back for a pass. The reason why Butler got an interception is because they watched the game film. The Pats knew the Seahawks could use this play, but even then that was no guarantee they could react to it in time. Butler had to close 5 yards at the moment of the snap, and he basically sprinted to the inside to get there, and then he had to bump Lockett off the ball AND make the catch. Everything had to go right, and it did. If even one thing had gone wrong for Butler, that's a dropped INT, and the Seahawks get two more go's. This play was a good play call, given the circumstances. Hindsight is 20/20, but hindsight is affected by the interception. If it had worked, Carroll would have been hailed as a genius. If it hadn't and Butler hadn't reacted like he did, the defense is now more wary of a pass and Lynch can have an easier time getting in.
@JerryMcB3rry2 жыл бұрын
@@raetekusu1 I personally disagree with your analysis here. Granted on most occasions I would agree with the notion of "catch the opposing team unaware" but when you're playing to win you gotta go with what gives you the greatest chance at success. Marshawn Lynch the entire game was unstoppable. If I recall correctly there was not a running play during that game that he carried the ball that didn't get positive yardage. That's pretty rare, especially in a setting like the super bowl, and so the logical thing to do here is run the ball with marshawn. Even if the play had worked out, I personally still would have been confused at the choice to throw it there, and I'm sure several people would have been, just because of the greater risk factor you're taking with that play.
