1983 AFC Divisional Playoff Game: Rookie QB Dan Marino and the Dolphins receivers, go against the upstart Seahawks defense. Can the Seahawks use their running game, to keep Marino and his receivers on the bench?

I was 13 and a huge Seahawk fan. Was so excited to see them win this shocker of an upset. Could you imagine if social media was around for this game....two straight kick return fumbles lost in the final 2 minutes, with Dan Marino and Mark Duper just stuck on the sidelines helpless?

Great to see Nine's Wide World of Sports coverage for this game down in Australia. Love the opening music featuring a spin on the Capital Cities theme. Dolphins were involved in some epic playoff showdowns back in the early 80s but I used to love watching these expansion era Seattle Seahawks great uniforms too.

As a Raider fan I hated Steve Largent. There was no, and I mean NO wide reciever who caused the Raiders more grief than him from 1976-1988. And that includes anyone from the Air Coryell or early Elway teams. And for that I sadly failed to appreciate just how truly epic great he was.

Fantastic hands and he was a master of route running and technique. He knew how to use angles and leverage and moves to get himself open everywhere on the field.

It was either Lester Hayes or Mike Haynes that have gone on record saying Largent was the toughest guy they ever had to defend. He really was special.

Is it just me or do others see a much less in your face style of play-much less taunting as such like we see in today's game-the speed of play is much slower but still was a high quality game in the 80s from my perspective. Thanks for the great games Richard-I remember this one very well.

Holy deja vu batman!!! If it isn't one of my recordings from back in the days that Channel 9 in Sydney, Australia, first started showing the NFL playoffs (no regular season games, that didn't happen until 1984 when we got Monday Night Football on Tuesday night). For completeness, this was recorded on a Toshiba Beta VCR and this is perhaps a copy from the original Beta tape, although I did convert to VHS eventually. Games were broadcast semi live, which meant around 11pm or even 4 in the morning !! Am presently re-recording to DVD all my NFL games and I have a few.

I was living in Seattle at the time I saw this game on TV, it was a great game I wasn't a fan at the time but I will rooted for the Seahawks. They went on to get beat down by then the Los Angeles Raiders in the AFC Championship, the next year they were 12 and 4 and they went to Miami again and Miami got revenged and crushed the Hawks 31-10.

What a bad start for Marino when it came to the playoffs. Dan just could not get much going. He led his offense to only 13 pts. until his Defense intercepted Krieg on the Seattle 17 yd. line late in the 4th quarter. Dan's 2 INT's didn't help the cause at all. When a QB throws that 2nd INT, his team's chances of winning go from around 50% to only around 30% in the playoffs.
@dennismumford61083 жыл бұрын
That would turn out to be 1 of Marino's biggest problems in the playoffs. Dan had 10 games with multiple INT's including his 3 championship game losses-'84 S.B. and '85 and '92 Conference Championship Games.
@bjchit2 жыл бұрын
You can thank his terrible defense never stopping anyone and forcing Marino throw 60 times a game for that.
@dennismumford61082 жыл бұрын
@@bjchit The other team had NFL QB's also, and many of them were better than Marino a majority of the time in the playoffs. Dan got outplayed by the opposing QB in a majority of his playoff games even though Miami had the higher Ranked Defense in a majority of them.
@dennismumford61082 жыл бұрын
@@bjchit In the game above, Marino was playing against the worst Defense in the League, while Krieg was playing against the best. Krieg had a Perfect Passer Rating in the playoff game before this (158.3) but Miami's Defense only allowed Krieg a Rating of 72.4 in this game.
@bjchit2 жыл бұрын
@@dennismumford6108 You are of course lying, Miami rarely had a better defense, and it showed. And Marino had a number of great games in the playoffs that were still losses, because of the aforementioned defense. Another lie you told is about the Seahawks. They were 24th in defense in 1983; hardly great, but not dead last in the league either. And Dave Krieg had such a great game because he threw all of 13 passes, as the game plan was run the ball almost 40 times. This game he threw for fewer yards despite having more completions, and they still ran the ball almost 40 times. Maybe quit lying if you can’t make a point.

roughing the passer today is outrageous . qb's really milk it . over and over i've seen potential defensive tacklers slow down and just touch the quarterbacks . the qb's throw themselves to the grown like they got hit by a truck . refs call roughing the passer every time . that new rule has got to go . also the blind side block rule has got to be revoked too. I have some sympathy with what we use to call spearing being a foul now , that is initiating a tackle with your helmet being a foul . browns vs KC in playoffs this year . KC tackler got away with spearing and the browns receiver trying to extend ball over the goal line lost it and it went into the endzone & KC got possession .

Seahawks would have 2 Superbowl victories if they would not have called for a pass against New England with the ball on the 1 yard line in closing seconds. New England had 2 Superbowls handed to them by Falcons and Seahawks. Shame Steve Largent never got to play in a Superbowl. Seahawk and Dolphin uniforms now suck anyway as do all NFL uniforms. Seahawks and Dolphins once had the most colorful sharp uniforms.

This is the start of Dan Marino's playoff record which ended at 8 wins and 10 losses. P-F-R did a study in '08 to show how much VALUE a QB was giving to his TEAM in the playoffs. Dan had 10 NEGATIVE VALUE GAMES and 2 games in the single digits. His overall Value was a terrible NEGATIVE 156.
@dennismumford61083 жыл бұрын
Favre's Value was 302, Warner 422, Staubach 461, Aikman 527, Young 580, Elway 767, Bradshaw 903, and Montana 1,292. Again Marino's Value was NEGATIVE 156. This study was done in '08 and never updated so no full values for Brady, Manning, Brees, Rodgers, etc., etc.
