WE DO!!!!! and the children are very understanding, helpful from JK! "We would never define 'normal" It is finding techniques and strategies that work with the child to ease anxiety.. ! Especially, Highly Autistic, non-Verbal on extreme end of spectrum! What works for one, is different for others! frustration is big if you can't communicate "I feel unwell" or "Heightened senses of something we don't notice but equivalent to scratching on blackboard or whatever makes your skin crawl! Positive Behavior Support sounds benign enough. For a parent working with a child with Autism, it is the initial question that leads to a search. In disabilities studies, on the other hand, we are finding that the medical model of disabilities (supporting helpful changes in the person with disabilities) is being critiqued by social model of disabilities (that power relationships and impediments placed by society in the pathway of persons with disabilities are the focus of change). In a recent Ph.D. interview, the candidate with a background in children on the autism spectrum came in from her Teacher's College saying with pride how her group is attempting "to learn how to control the child" in order to make them "fit into the school system." Inclusive education? Or telling an elephant to climb a tree? ABA is an empire, based on science, that needs to re-embody itself outside of the medical model. This would free it from many of the biases and control/power issues it creates. Thanks to the many comments below for their perspectives!

Could brushing teeth be painful to him and that's why he's trying to escape in the first place? Traditional toothpaste literally would burn and sting the inside of my mouth, my lips and tongue. I think it may have even stung my fingers. I've been using pure baking soda to clean my teeth for years and my teeth are so white, people who have had their teeth whitened with a laser are jealous of me.

Great information. It really helps to put things in perspective. This information has assisted me in helping my staff to understand our clients on a more personal level and has enabled us to have a starting point of assisting clients through their behaviors as well as how to be proactive.

PBS is in line with ABA correct? so PBS would be the explanation and ABA the behavioral implementation to get rid or minimize unwanted behavior? is this correct?

Teach them that if people harass them for "flapping", to tell the person harassing them to mind their own business and buzz off.

Instead of focusing on "normal" all the time, why not teach "gen ed" classmates to accept people that are different?
