If we're talking about ballistic missiles subs like the Typhoon, you should compare it to the US Ballistic Missile Sub...the Ohio Class. The Seawolf is the attack sub long with the Ohio and Columbia class attack subs. Russian attack sub classes similar to the Seawolf/Ohio/Columbia are the Russian Sierra/Victor/Akula/Laika class attack subs. and THEN you also have the Russian Oscar class which are cruise missile subs. US converted some Ohio class subs into Cruise Missle subs as well. Pretty much the nuclear ballistic missile subs (SSBNs) will always be the nuclear deterrent. Each one can pretty much destroy the world on their own. The fast attack subs (SSNs) are the hunters. And nowadays, also being used for special operations insertions like you mentioned, as well as cruise missile platforms. So yea...there's a lot of cool submarine stuff out there :)

The Seawolf submarines are one of the very few pieces of military tech one can serve on in this world that feels truly "Overpowered". You know it when you are on it. This machine is an unrivaled, unmatchable monster that will spend its entire life of service muzzled and caged because nothing in the history of warfare, and maybe as much as a century of warfare's future, could ever give it a challenge worthy of really stretching its legs. Sad from the perspective of a Warmachine, but quite comforting really to the humans serving on it. Allegedly...

Like most people born after the cold war, no. The Sea wolf was not only developed to counter the Typhoon, but also the Alpha. @MichaelArcAngel1028 Former Seawolf Sailor checking in. Yes, Micael is right the 688s were perfectly capable of hunting Typhoons. I think there are some significant wrong details in the video. He mentions multiple reactors and a single turbine, it's the other way around. 1 reactor and 2 propulsion turbines, 2 turbine generators. Seawolf's safe dive depth is also given wrong (per the officially released number). But @Peter is also right, it's the most bad ass. We played with enough LA boats on theor TREs to confirm this.
@WillPittenger3 жыл бұрын
One of the cool aspects of the Seawolf class is how they were built. Previous classes of subs were built hull first. They they try to squeeze major components in through hatches. This was compared to building a complex Swiss watch by assembling the inner working through the stem hole. With the Seawolf, they built the hull sections as modules with much of the interior already complete.

@M16_Akula-III3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what it's doing. If they we're tracking it while it was cruising (10-20 Knots) it's easy to track them. But, if the Typhoon realized your there, start backing up since you don't have a chance to fight it. (4 Torpedo tubes VS 6 Torpedo tubes) Also depends on the depth + if there is a layer and a duct.

I think you may be wrong with the active and passive modes with the mk 48 torpedos. Passive means it would be listening for loud sounds to home in on, surface ships and various other craft make much louder sounds so it would be very easy for the torpedo to detect those sounds and home in on them. Active mode means it would be pinging, sending out sound waves and homing in on the reflection of the sound waves. That would be used for quiet targets such as submarines which don't make loud sounds, but the hull of a target would reflect sound waves sent by the torpedo. I think you just got those backwards. But even then, wether passive or active mode is used is all dependent more on the situation over what kind of Target is being attacked. just speaking as a general rule what modes will be used

Those speeds are what the Navy will _admit to_ , as a former squid myself I can tell you for certain those numbers are about 20% lower than the actual max speeds. The ranges and speeds given for the ADCAP are also understated.

I was lucky (unlucky) enough to be stationed onboard the USS Proteus (AS-19) from 1986 to 1990. As a RADIAC calibration tech, I was assigned to R-5 division (Nuclear Support Facility (NSF)). The best part of that service allowed me to work on the last of the Diesel Boats (in Japan) up to the most advanced, at the time, 688 class. The Seawolf class was still just barely spoke of when I left the Navy in 1997.

Seawolf and Connecticut are weapons for another time that got caught up in their own success. When they stopped building 21-class boats the reservoir for replacement parts dried up. Carter is a superstar; so much so that they cannibalize Seawolf and Connecticut for spare parts. They don't need subs that can engage an entire surface fleet by themselves right now. What they do need is best-ever spy subs. We won't know about Carter's exploits until years from now, but she's going to end up being the most a ward-winning boat in history. And after Parche that's saying a lot!

The Typhoons were more akin to the Ohio's (Boomers) . I'm not sure why even mention the LA class, as they were fast-attack boats, and Ohios and Typhoons were the SSBNs.. of course, the fast-attack boats were also tasked to hunt the SSBNs. I mean, ya sure, the Seawolf-class was supposed to replace the LA class, but I'm not sure if comparing the Typhoon the the LA was the correct comparison.

Simon! I love your videos and understand this was a follow up to the Typhoon class video you made, but this one was pretty far off on the facts. -The Seawolf was designed to deal with the Akula not the Typhoon. -It was not the first sub to use HY-100 the metal had been around but it was not needed for the normal operating depths of cold war era submarines. It was upgraded to on the Seawolf because the Akula used a titanium hull that allowed it to dive much deeper that any non research USN submarine. The Seawolf was made to go deeper to ensure the Akula would not be able to pass undetected at greater depths. -You mentioned the capacity of the torpedoes and that is one of the biggest features of the Seawolf that sets it apart. It carries nearly 2x as many as any other fast attack submarine. This is for forward deployments where doing a weapons load is not practical. It allows the Seawolf to stay on station much longer without having to resupply. -The Los Angeles class submarine is much faster than the Typhoon and far more advanced. The Typhoon is a classic Russian tactic of using quantity. It just was bigger and had more missiles but technologically speaking it was far behind anything the US had in the era. The Typhoon was loud slow and easily tracked by a Los Angeles class. I love your videos and watch them all the time. I just really enjoy this subject and wanted to let people know that some of the information was incorrect. I understand that doing a video one of the most classified assets in the USN is difficult.

Akula is an SSN (attack boat), Typhoon is a SSBN (missle carrier). Akula is the fastest & deepest diving sub known due to its titanium hull, an element much more abundant in the former Soviet Union than in the US (we had to secretively buy it from them for our SR-71's).

The big problem with the Seawolf class is it's operation to maintenance ratio. For just about every day spent at sea it requires two in port for upkeep. We only built two of them (2.5 if you count the Carter) and they take up a shitload of drydock time and resources.

11:03 The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Very interesting how the SeaWolf was made. In 1984, a rogue USSR Typhoon Class submarine, which was the most advanced submarine at the time, defected and the USSR sent out 3 fleets to find and sink it. They also sent out 58 submarine hunter planes to find it and 1 nearly got it but the Typhoon submarine broke the torpedoes ankles and it crashed into a canyon wall. The rogue submarine kept losing the USS Dallas during the chase because it kept going into "Silent Mode" and the Dallas couldn't hear it and track it during silent mode. During the chase, 1 CIA operative boarded the USS Dallas and then in the battle between 1 USSR submarine and the Typhoon, 3 CIA operators boarded the rogue Typhoon with a underwater vessel. The USSR submarine sunk itself with it's own torpedo and the rogue submarine mysteriously "disappeared". A couple years later in 1989, the US Navy came out with the SeaWolf Class Submarine who is now the most silent and efficient submarine known to man.

Some confusion may exist as the name Akula (Russian: Акула, meaning "shark" in Russian) was used by the Soviets for a different class of submarines, the Project 941, which is known in the West as the Typhoon class. The Project 971 was named Shchuka-B by the Soviets but given the designation Akula by the West after the name of the lead ship, K-284.
@bruces1g2 жыл бұрын
@@gibbo1977 The Alfa Class was a separate class from the Akula attack submarine.The Alfa class, Soviet designation Project 705 Lira (Russian: Лира, meaning "Lyre", NATO reporting name Alfa), was a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines in service with the Soviet Navy from 1971 into the early 1990s, with one serving later with the Russian Navy until 1996. They were the fastest military submarines ever built, with only the prototype submarine K-222 (NATO reporting name Papa-class) exceeding them in submerged speed.

Since I have time, I'm gonna get back on this: PLEASE do Denver International Airport! It's the second largest airport in the world (Though lets be real, King Fahd really shouldn't be largest. I said what I said). Might work for Geographics, but the entire airport is a bit more of a megaproject. Your call of course Simon! Attempt 1.
@steeljawX3 жыл бұрын
I know the US Military has a lot of fun megaprojects and are kinda one third of the Mega Project's front liners (along with Chinese civics works and Russian projects), but I think you should take a gander at the US Fletcher class and US Gearing class destroyers. 175 of the former and 152 of the later were launched and served in WWII. In another scale, the US built and used a greater destroyer force during the course of WWII than the entire sum of all three Axis navies had in destroyers combined. (327 USN Fletcher and Gearing classes vs all 249 Imperial Japanese Navy, Kreigsmarine, and Regia Marina destroyer classes). They aren't Liberty Ships by numbers made, but they sure were being stamped out for small ships with things that go boom on them. Fletchers peaked out at the fastest being launched out 151 days after being laid down. Weren't the most "mega" weapons of the war, but when you're spitting out destroyers like that and your biggest rival, the IJN, has peaked out at a bit over 1/3 of what you ended with (162), you do have to wonder A. What was Japan's government thinking getting involved with the US, and B. Didn't we (the US) go a bit overboard with the #'s?

If Simon wants to make another video on a Cold War aircraft you could try doing one on the A-10 Warthog. It's the red-headed stepchild of the US Air Force that everyone thought was too ugly to fly. It was intended to be a flying tank/vehicle destroyer. The nose cannon weighs so much the plane tilts backward and slams on its rear when you take it off.
