I agree the laptop thing is good cause you can play music before a show to get the energy going so when the show starts the fans are already pumped up and you get that huge cheer when they come on stage!

Live sound engineer here… I literally tour with some of these bands mentioned in this video. Actually typing this from stage left as we speak. Some things to point out… First, laptops/playback rigs are used everywhere for lots of reasons. Having these does NOT mean you are faking/lip syncing, however. They can be used for everything from intros to click tracks for the band to have in their in ears. But my next point is they CAN be used for backing tracks as well. I have seen bands record their entire performance in rehearsals and just play it back day after day and mime their entire set. It does happen too and I do think this sucks. But it is what it is. But there can be other uses in between too. For example, if a band has a full orchestra on their album, they obviously can’t always bring a full orchestra to a show. So in this case it makes sense to have the orchestra on a backing track. This is not faking or cheating the crowd, it’s simply budget and logistics. It just makes sense. My point being, to outright say that anybody who uses a “laptop”, in whatever sense they mean is inherently bad, is just stupid. Often times some sort of playback is actually necessary for the show to run properly. Don’t even get me started on timecode… but there are people out there who abuse it and just fake their entire set and still get paid. Be informed before you argue, everyone. Cheers!

Before laptops, bands had "tent musicians" which were singers and guitar players who played/sang along with the band, off stage. A famous tent singer is the current singer from Warrant, Robert Mason (and former Lynch Mob singer) who sang for Ozzy Osbourne. I'm friends with a guy who toured with STYX as a side guitar player. Nothing wrong with a little bit of sonic help to make the sound fuller. Laptops these days can be used for non-existent players or singers to be heard but are primarily used for production cues (lighting, pyro, etc.) where different lighting scenes and explosions happen at a certain time within the song. Just ask any touring drummer, they'll tell ya because they need to be listening to the click track to make certain those events happen at the precise times. Welcome to the age of technology.

It bothers me just as much to use pre-recorded music as it does to use extra musicians on stage to cover overdubbed parts. If the song structure is good, there is no need for a full reproduction of the album, just a reproducition of the melody and chord progression and somewhere near the same tempo. The bands that can improvise over that structure, like Van Halen or Sammy Hagar especially, are way beyond normal bands musically. However, most fans go to see a show, not to hear great music. If the goal was to hear great music rather than be entertained as a show, then we would all wear headphones and insist on silence at a concert like in Classical music at the Opera house. So you can't fault Radke or his band for having their computers ripped off. I would imagine they had well over 40 hours if not 400 hours of programming in their rigs. If they don't bring the full force of their light show and samples along with their probable amp modeling, it doesn't help their fans wanting to "see" the show. If they want to hear it, they can plug in the CD or Spotify and use headphones. If you have heard the technicality in the guitar playing you would realize this is completely different than playing classic rock, blues, like Joe Perry from Aerosmith. Many of Falling in Reverse songs have more guitar notes in the first four bars than Aerosmith has in the entire song. Without a laptop to help control your tone and model your room, you have almost no hope of being heard in a band with another guitar player, especially i a pleasant way. This was one of the reasons early Metallica fans always complained about Hetfields erratic voice and playing, because they didn't have computers to help control the environment. Now that Metallica does, and they have 25 more years of experience, they use the same computers and are way tighter of a band, for their rhythm chain and in ear monitor system off their laptops with the click tracks. Playing in that size of stadiums, there is no way to get the entire band tight, as the distance between the speakers alone induce delays that wobble the rhythm out of sync. And of course this too is why all of Jason Newsteads bass on And Justice for All is claimed to not be audible, when to a guitar player, it is easy to hear.

Nah I agree with you. I want to hear as much as was in production as possible. Going to a show to be let down is such a bummer. I’ve watched quite a bit of live footage of FIR this last few months and even where I thought it was a background vocal..NOPE, was his guitarists who can freaking sing. His vocals are the best they’ve ever been. Let’s get out of the analog mindset. They are playing and sing live. It’s the extra effects. I swear they 808’s on some of their songs. It’s part of what makes the song sound so freakin good. How are they supposed to “play” an 808? Or any synths? Then like u said, cues, for EVERYTHING lighting cues, etc. if they had pyrotechnics (which I haven’t seen them use) you’d definitely want that cued and timed to perfection. I’m the “analog” days, bands relied on engineers to do it and sometimes that shit went sideways and ppl got hurt. My point is Radke is right, Trunk is in the wrong and he of ALL people should KNOW better. Now, I have seen clips of some shows from a completely DIFFERENT band, and yeah, it’s a lot of prerecorded stuff that her should’ve been played/song live. If that’s what Eddie is talking about, he’s talking about the wrong band.

Im old as F and a long time Bach/SR fan but ffs Bach should know by now that he works in entertainment. FIR use a heap of intro's, fills and what sound like some backing vocals to create quite a grandiose live performance. It isnt any more or less of a rock show, just different. Even though a raw version of an FIR show would be imho F'ing awesome, theres no way they would have enough time to rehearse to a point where the band could in good conscience go ahead with the show. As much as I love Bach, I'd put a $50 on Radke.....

A vast amount of Falling In Reverse’s songs have electronic elements in them so a laptop is kind of required to give the full effect instead of half adding it. I completely agree with just playing your instrument but using backing tracks doesn’t mean a band is bad. Like it or not we’re in a technological age where everyone uses some sort of advancement that makes our lives easier. If the technology was there 50 years ago you can’t tell me bands wouldn’t take advantage of it. Eddie Trunk is irrelevant now I can’t even remember the last time I heard his name till now. And Sebastian Bach while I respect the music he made is a gatekeeping clown. Him and Corey Taylor do the same kind of thing except Corey actually speaks facts instead of talking out his ass. Bach only gives a fuck when he’s personally attacked while Corey defends the genre as a whole. Guarantee you he’d be defending Ronnie as well.

Even photos lie these days thanks to photo shop.and editing. I ran into an elderly guy who was watching a live band (no tracks or laptops) jam it out and he said to me, "They need matching outfits. Nice 2 piece slacks and a jacket. Then they will look like an ensemble. They will never get anywhere looking like this". Why did he think that. Cuz he was old and that's what bands in his day did. And musicians of the past had talent without backup. And that's what people expected just like they expected matching outfits on groups. Today's people accept back up as normal while older people long for natural talent. If they hear a trumpet, they want to see a trumpet. WATCH the player makev the musical from his heart and soul. Admire his talent. It's like watching someone paint a masterpiece vs letting a computer do it. It a great end result either way but you.took the heart and soul right out of it. It's the difference between getting the photo right in the camera the first time or correcting everything about it by editing. Anyone can program a computer but can anyone touch your soul acapella?

@@ProjectGRIDLOKT Since you mention Neil Peart. It's no secret that Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee used pedals to trigger backing tracks playing live. Alex can't play two guitars at once and Geddy can't play the keyboard and bass at the same time. It's also no secret that Alex "singing" backup vocals sound exactly like Geddys voice in concerts. I'm sure Falling in Reverse could get by without backing tracks but that would mean hiring more touring musicians and that is not cheap. They deserve to make as much money as they can and backing tracks are how they save money to make money.

@Clyde minimal is not possible anymore. Maybe if your band still only uses standard instruments, but a lot of bands have orchestral sounds, synth sounds, and many need a DJ position to run half the production. This isn't a new thing either, especially when Nu Metal was huge. A lot of the variety of sounds being heard have to sometimes come from multiple guitars as well, some groups may only have 2 guitars and can't mix all of it without taking from something else. Computers are essential to the production of a concert set, it's not a new thing either. Ronnie is actually defending that fact because what those other 2 are saying is that it's a weak excuse and downplaying the need for the laptops. Anyone who says they aren't necessary either haven't put together a concert in the past 20 years or don't have a bands big enough to do it.

As long as certain elements remain live performance like the core band members (vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboard etc), I don't mind if a band needs a laptop for the remaining aspects of their shows (like the orchestral parts of a song for starters). Especially if a band is performing primarily from a setlist that requires a laptop to keep these parts of a song intact without trying to tour with an entire orchestra, keep the laptops. They need it, the show needs it and the audience would appreciate it too. Again, like I said, just as long as the core band members performing are playing live because after all, we paid tickets to see them actually play live.

Sebastian Bach backed Skid Row was my childhood soundtrack. His history has always saddened me. Also I just saw Falling in Reverse at aftershock and although there were tracks each band member was authentically playing. So theres no problem here. Heres the thing, the people who complain about tracks but then praise slipknot truly show they know nothing about music. Secondly, those who complain about laptops used by bands playing in festivals is beyond me. Theres literally thousands of uses that a laptop comes in clutch for at live performances.

One of them being samples or orchestra, additional vocals like harmonies that were done in the studio but for whatever reason can't be done live. Also some bands even run amp sims straight to front of house instead of using traditional amps, or they have all their patch changes for different songs set up in midi so you don't have to be switching presets all the time then you set it up to a click so your drummer gets the click in their in ears so they make sure they're on tempo consistently

Unfortunately Trunk & Bach are still living in the 80's. Welcome to 2022, where most bands and artists use laptops during their live performances for various reasons. Some uses for laptops onstage include click tracks for drummers, IEM systems so that the musicians can hear themselves and each other, backing tracks for instruments and effects that cannot be performed live without a full on orchestra/choir/DJ etc. Laptops are even used for the lighting during a live performance in alot of cases so that the lights match up to each song and their vibe. Yes, there are some bands/artists that tend to overuse technology onstage but for the most part that is not the case, especially with a band like Falling In Reverse where each member is amazingly talented on their respective instrument, not to mention they can all sing incredibly! Just my 2 cents.

I feel like the point is being missed here... they canceled their show rather than just doing a show without the laptop...if they are any kind of a decent band (Which they are) they can pick songs that don't require a laptop and still do a good show. That's what sucks about this whole thing... using tracks for special effects and a little extra oomph is fine. Don't get me wrong. My band uses them for intros and clip drops, but half the time we go to the event, and they don't have the specific hook up we need, so we just do it without the special effects... and everyone still has a great time. They disappointed their fans and didn't need to. That's pretty much What pisses off a lot of people. Not them using tracks.

But then again if you're hiring musicians and not using regulars all the time I guess it's different.) Also it just seems like that's making everything a little more dangerous. I mean God forbid someone accidentally stepped on a cable connector that was running to the laptop and all of a sudden it shut off? I did not realize that they are some weird hip hop band with metal elements. I didn’t realize Ronald was a rapper. It makes total sense now why they were not able to do a show without their laptop. 85% of the actual show music is on that thing. Imagine going and seeing a hip-hop show without backing tracks. Maybe they can play some of their older songs that were more hard rock But that would require practice and their sets would be totally different and probably not very well received by the major audience. Plus if their laptops were their only device for their intended purpose, it would take too long to set up another one so yeah it makes sense. Unless people want him to perform just the acoustic parts of "The drug in me is reimagined" then yeah, they wouldn't sound as good as they can be. Imagine they go perform anyway, but it sounds off due to the lack of backing tracks and effects, people would bash on them like there's no tomorrow. A bad situation either way.

They have entire sections of songs where Ronnie is rapping over an actual rap beat while the main instruments stay silent. Those entire sections would be missing. From my perspective, if my band had already showed up to an event and THEN found out that our laptop was missing, then I'd just tell our vocalist that I'd play the drum beat for the rap parts and we would just make do without it. If I found out days prior to the event that our shit was missing and we couldn't get it replaced in time for the show, it'd be a hard decision to make whether or not we would still play the show. A lot of bands now have orchestra, keys, intros, click tracks, or even entire light shows setup on laptops. I can definitely understand why they chose to not play. The audience would get a very underwhelming experience and then complain about that too. There's no winning situation there.

I get that it sucks they had to cancel, but if they ended up giving an underwhelming performance because a lot of the back-tracks and affects in their songs being missing would only lead to even more hate and a reputation for being a bad performing live band (which in the long run can be more damaging). If someone has a sh*tty performance, then they just suck. When someone cancels, people at least tend to stop and ask why; this at least gives them a chance to explain the situation. Warning: long comment. This seems like a really stupid thing to have a quarrel about. I mean I sorta understand Trunks take about live rock shows but here’s the thing, Aerosmith and Falling in Reverse are 2 different types of bands. Yeah I’m sure Aerosmith uses just pure instruments, they did that since the beginning but they also came from a different time of rock n roll. It’s evolved a bit. Now, almost all bands have a little bit of technology with their music. Falling in Reverse is one of them. Now I also agree with Ronnie but I do think he tends to get a little heated in situations where he doesn’t really need to. This is one of them. All in all, both sides have points but they’re both going about it wrong. I will say though that laptops or technology in general is very important when it comes to today’s music especially for shows. Even the light shows are programmed into a laptop. So even if it wasn’t for the music it was definitely needed for something in the show, and I think fans would be upset if it was halfassed because the crew or whoever lost a laptop that was pivotal to the show’s performance like the lights or the stage effects. It’s all part of the experience.
