Coe, showing good form on the way into the 1980 Olympics, took a half a second off of Rick Wohlhuter's 1000m world record to become the only man in history to concurrently hold the 800/1000/1500 and mile WR's.This distinction lasted for just an hour when his great rival and compatriot Steve Ovett took the mile record at the same meet!

For those too young to have witnessed Seb Coe running the remarkable thing was he set world records with virtually no help at all. Eg when he set this 1000 m world record he ran the last 400 m totally alone!!!!!!! And even then it took 26 years for anyone to beat it and runners like Ovett, Cram, Aouita, Morceli, El Gourouj, etc couldn't get anywhere near it. He is also the only runner ever to hold the 800, 1000, 1500 and mile record ALL at the same time. He's also the only man in history to win the 1500 m Olympic Gold in two Olympics in a row!! Simply the best ever. Coe is the GOAT.

@@APBCTechnique Yes he got it wrong tactically in 1980 and 1984 and the selectors got it wrong in 1988. As for the World Championships they didn't start till 1983 but if they did exist in 1979 and 1981 Coe would have had a great chance as he didn't lose a single 800 or 1500 in those 2 years! I think he missed them in 1985 and 1987 through injury.

To be fair, Seb had his share of pacemakers. It got to the stage where, every time he ran in a race on the European circuit, there was an expectation that the world record for that distance would come under threat, and promoters felt that they and the crowd weren't going to get their money's worth if things weren't set up with a pacemaker in the field. The same also applied to races involving Steve Ovett and, later, Steve Cram.

Strange how you claim to know Coe used anabolics! Perhaps you should take your evidence to the press and make a fortune! Do you know how many middle distance guys were on and caught for steroids in the late 70s/ early 80s? I'd love to find out from the man in the know!
@deano27671
@deano27671 10 жыл бұрын
***** Lol. Are you really serious about comparing to the women's 800m in Moscow? You clearly no little about that era and the evidence that has emerged since then. The Russians, along with the GDR and most of the other EAst European Communist states, were all on state sponsored drug programmes. This was particularly the case in women, who are scientifically proven to react more to the use of anabolic steroids and testosterone than men. This was used predominantly in power events like sprints and field events, hence most of the WRs in those events were set in the 80's. Steroids were not believed to be of much use in middle or distance events, but many field events benefitted from its use. The women's 800m in Moscow was the greatest race in history at that event, Olizarenko's (1:53.43) still puts her No. 2 on all tim list, Mineyeva ((1:54.81) is 5th of all time and Providokhina (1:55.46) is 15th. This was the greatest depth in any race. What was the UK record at the time? About 1:59.1 by C. Boxer. Where were the British women on steroids? There weren't any. What were the British women doing in the sprints? Nothing compared to the GDR and USSR. Your train of thought makes no sense. It is clear that the East Europeans were taking peds on mass, backed up by the fact that every year many Russian middle distance women have tested positive over the last 20 years. If you think this implies the Brit middle distance runners were using peds, where were all our great female runners and male distance runners, or did they only allow Coe and Ovett to take them? Moreover, the 78 European and 80 Olympics were held behind the Iron Curtain, making it easier for Russian and GDR athletes to take drugs and pass the doping controls. British athletes (e.g. Coe and Ovett) would have been tested at major champs and every time they broke a WR. They were also tested out of competition by UK Athletics from 1981 and randomly tested out of season from 1985. The IAAF didn't implement this testing protocol until 1989. The British were testing thoroughly before most other countries.
@deano27671
@deano27671 10 жыл бұрын
***** No, it wasn't copy and paste, it was straight off the top of my head. As I have already said, Coe and Ovett would have been randomly tested out of season from 1985 onwards. Coe had one of his best years and set his 1500 pb in 86, well into the random out of season regime. Steroids in big enough quantities are believed to have long term effects, though these would be damaging if started too early while developing. We're talking power events here, not middle and distance running. As I have already asked, how many British middle distance runners have ever tested positive for steroids? Now answer the same question regarding Russians, predominantly their women?
@deano27671
@deano27671 10 жыл бұрын
***** For a start, blood doping was legal in the 70's and early 80's. Anyone performing this technique was not acting illegally, but of course it is morally reprehensible and against the spirit of the sport, not to mention incredibly dangerous. The only known cases of blood doping at this time were the Finns from the 70's (one athlete admitted to it, another, Vainio tested positive in LA) and the Italians ( a couple of athletes have admitted to it as have some coaches) in the early 80's. Both sets of athletes were undergoing this with the knowledge of their respective national authorities. It wasn't banned until the end of 1985, when Coe and Lord Moynihan put forward a white paper calling for a ban, which was taken up by the IAAF for the next season. Again, Coe's best 1500 was in 86. The fact that when offering you "facts", your response is, "It doesn't mean anything", makes it appear that you are the one who has already made up his mind based on no evidence whatsoever. If this is truly the mantra you use in life, then we might as well convict every athlete that has ever lived and never tested positive as guilty of drug use as well!
@deano27671
@deano27671 10 жыл бұрын
***** Anabolic steroids, which I repeat he was tested for more than a hundred times in his career, do not make you faster. They enable you to train harder, do longer sessions and to recover from illness and injury more quickly. Coe's career was littered with illness and injury, which again does not set any red lights off for ped use. How many times was EL G ruled out of a Champs (or any big race come to think of it) during his career? Running at or close to WR pace week in week out over a season and over many years is more an indication of steroid and EPO use. I have no idea how you can state he had 'bone development around 1979' just by looking at him? I don't even know what that means. Bone density cannot be seen, your bones don't get bigger. HGH will make your jaw bigger. Coe's official weight was 58kg in 1979, which dropped to 56kg in his later career. If you followed his career at the time, then you'll know that he changed course from that of a 1500 (European Junior bronze in '75) and 3000m runner, to that of an 800/1500m runner in 1976. That Autumn he joined Loughborough Uni, where he undertook intense gym work, including weights, plyios, stretching and overall core conditioning under George Gandy, whose work at the time was not the norm for middle distance guys and was subsequently well documented. The emphasis was on speed, and his improved strength and speed evolved gradually over his next 3 years at Loughborough. By 1979 his legs were certainly more muscular, but his upper body was puny. He continued to do weights all year round for the rest of his career, something that was taken on board later by the likes of Aouita, Morceli, El G, and latterly Salazar with Rupp and Farah. Coe's frame and weight (around 9 stone for someone 5'9") is not reflective of someone on steroids. His weight is exceptionally low for someone of his height, even for an elite athlete. May I also remind you that Cruz ran within 0.1 of Coe's 800 WR 3 years after Coe's run. So that must mean Cruz was also on steroids!? What about Kipketer and Rudisha? The fact that Coe was able to run 1:43.3 in 1989, just before his 33rd birthday, at a time when all elites were being randomly tested throughout the year, vindicates that a time of 1:41.7 was more than possible for someone of 24. I also question your theory that steroid has long term benefits after use has stopped. When Ben Johnson returned from his ban, he never got anywhere near the same level.

Seb Coe would be held in far greater esteem nowadays (as he rightly deserves), if he wasn’t considered posh, and he hadn’t become the archetypal ‘Tory Boy’ Conservative MP that he did. He was unfairly thought of as elitist, and not a ‘man of the people’. He had very few chinks in his armour, and this meant the British public and media couldn’t metaphorically chop him down at the knees.
