@U Betcha I like Giovinco but no way, not even close. No TFC player is in that conversation. The mount Rushmore would be kyle lowry and joe carter, but then it gets hard to choose. Vince carter left on bad terms, but the relationship has since been fixed. Kawhi won a championship, but he didn't stick around. DeMar was great and very loyal, but his legacy has to include choking in the playoffs and being the sacrificial lamb for Kawhi. Alomar was great, but the rape allegations keep him off. Halladay's Jays teams sucked. Bautista? Maybe. Donaldson was only here four years, and the last two years he spent on IR. Encarnacion left in free agency like so many others. No Leaf pre-1967 sticks out, they didn't have any true superstars. No Leaf post-1967 deserves to be up there, no Cup. Maybe Sundin, and Matthews could get up there someday. But Giovinco definitely isnt up there. Soccer simply isn't big enough in Toronto for him to be considered.

I think Sebastian Giovinco was smart and made the right decisions. Because of the mentality of most European coaches, getting into a top European club was going to be hard, and competing for a starting place with the Top European strikers at the time was going to be even harder; not because of a lack of ability on his part, but rather because of the mindset of the European coaches. Unlike other players who stick around at a club playing a bit part waiting for the coach to take them more seriously, Giovinco knew he could flourish in North America. In Toronto, the coach used him in the position that he should have been playing in when he was at Juventus and in the Italian team. A winger has to be fast and strong to fend off full backs who are also fast, but usually much bigger and stronger. Giovinco was fast, but his height put him at a disadvantage where strength is concerned. Someone like that needs to be placed in a striker's position, or as a playmaker just behind the striker. His speed and skill would no doubt draw penalties, and his deadly accuracy would make him a source of goals. This is exactly what happened in Toronto. Unfortunately, there are times when even coaches fail to realize what they have and how to use it, and Italy failed to reach the World Cup. Giovinco would have been an excellent partner for Messi, but that's another story. I don't think the English game would have suited his style of play, most Premier League coaches would not have used him properly. For me, Giovinco is a legend. Because say what you want about the MLS, to achieve what he achieved, you have to be very good. Thierry Henry, Kaká, Beckham and others left Europe and went to the MLS, but none of them set the records he set, and he actually played against some of those legends in the MLS. Giovinco analyzed the situation, made his decisions, set records and became a legend in the minds of many people. And guess what, he's happy, and that's all that matters. In life, you can waste your time trying to win over the most popular girl, or you can move on and find a girl that truly appreciates you. Sebastian did the right thing.

So he had already made a name for himself in Europe, and at 30, he was probably in his prime, but with younger competition in Europe, it would have been more difficult, so Mexico was perhaps a good choice if he wanted to learn Spanish and enjoy a more tropical climate.

Some players thrive when confident and I think he's that type of player, his full skill was on show in Canada. I know I'd rather try my hardest in the MLS than be in a low-confidence (at the time) Juventus team. A few more poor seasons in Italy could have killed his passion for the game but he looked so happy in Toronto.

Giovinco is an absolute footy hero in Toronto. He loved it here because he was able to still maintain some anonymity. He nearly single handedly changed the dismal fortunes of Toronto FC from a perennial losing team to a two time MLS championship winner, and three time finalist, along with winning a treble. He also embraced Toronto - having arrived barely speaking a word of English and leaving nearly fluent in the language. At first, he wouldn't even grant interviews in English due to his poor language skills. By the time he left, he would happily converse in English. When TFC let him leave for Saudi Arabia fans were despondent because he was so well loved. We haven't been the same since he left. As an aside, my ex-girlfriend was at the Toronto Children's Hospital several years ago waiting for her brother, who was having a check up. She was visibly pregnant with our son and Toronto FC were in the lounge, visiting various kids as well. The first to turn to her and start talking? Giovinco - who was known to be quite shy when he arrived at Toronto and was now talking to her about having kids, etc. She said he was really nice and the friendliest out of the players there.

I can see everybody's point of view. I saw him playing against the Red Bulls in NYC. Let me tell you, he was effortlessly at a much higher level than everybody else. He looked like a pro toying with high schoolers. His vision, passing, skills, speed, etc., were superb... however, I was also able to tell that he was playing at maybe 40% of his abilities. I think that is where many have a problem. He was not really challenged by anybody in that game. His teammates were nowhere nearly as smart to make the right runs, or pass combinations, or positional intelligence, etc. I do not think he is wrong in his decision to go to Toronto. But I can totally see how he is seen at the elite level. I suppose it also has to do with tradition, and many would see it as disrespectful to stay at 40% and never grow. It is like the movie Good Will Hunting. Will wanted to work as a construction worker even though he could do Noble Price worth Physics... My apologies if this is disrespectful to any MLS fan or Toronto fan. I am just putting it as a perspective. On the other hand, he was happy, and he made so many people so happy. He had more time for his family, his body was preserved better, he was earning a lot of money, etc. Quite a wonderful life, TBH. You cannot blame somebody for making those decisions in life. Anyways, I enjoyed watching him play, and I wish him the best. I hope he comes back to the MLS and gives the beautiful people of Toronto many more reasons to celebrate.

The problem was never him. The National side and big clubs wrote him off after he went to Canada. If you have a guy in his prime, lighting up a lesser league who’s full of confidence and was showing promise with a 2 larger domestic sides, if you’re not kicking the tires you’re foolish. The best thing for Gio was that he realized he didn’t need them and the Azzurri shirt is just a shirt. What’s the point of honors from such people when he can win everywhere he goes, and make a load of money?

I don't think it is a fair factual reconstruction: Giovinco was not wrote off _because_ he went to Canada, he was wrote off before Canada and that's why he moved. _Before_ going to Canada he already had the fame of being someone that could play impressively when he was the strongest on the pitch, but he couldn't impress when the competition level increased. He did well in Empoli and Parma, not the stronger sides in Serie A, but he didn't do enough to be a starter in Juve or in the National Team. He had 23 presences with the national team, scoring 1 goal against Japan. The move to Canada, and his impressive performance there, couldn't overturn this prejudice against him because it was consistent with said prejudice: we already saw him performing well with Empoli (I remember an impressive goal against Roma in 2007) and Parma. To break the spell and show that he was able to play _also_ at a higher level there was no other option than coming back to a top European side.

Even if he "flopped" making 7 million a year in Canada has set up his family for generations. Not a lot of flops can say this. The majority of prodigy talents fade away and end up with little. Seba was one of my favorite players when i was younger, i used to live in turin around that time. I never understood why he left for the mls but i was happy for him because he seemed to like to play and live there. And i think the latter is the main reason for his departure from Europe, i believe he really just wanted to play football, get paid and live in a nice county without having to worry about all media, coaches and high expectations from fans in europe. Just like when you quote that infamous man that respond to the name of Gianpiero Ventura, here in Italy this wonderful player have never enjoyed that minimum credit that is given to someone with his skills. Why? 'Cause here, at the time of his prime (and still as of today, for old school managers) if you're a football player you must be at least *this* tall, *this* muscularly big, *this* physically strong. Those "minimum spec" are a bit lowered if you are a trequartista, or better a fantasista, but still there is some kind of physical expectations: when you grow up in age, you grow up in muscles and the old school manager begin to trust you more, making you play more. He never get taller, or bigger, so he was seen as a "wonder kid" first-waiting for him to "grow". He didn't. Ignorance, lack of courage, old school granitic ideals from big societies and managers made the rest. So i plaude to his bravery to fuck off Italy as a championship, Europe, Juventus and all...and going to help raise the football level of another country. He only cared for the maglia azzurra since he's gone, showing a rare caring for it. Definitively bigger than some players that escaped the last, crucial game against Switzerland last week lamenting some obscure injuries and goin' back to their clubs (who said Juventus...?) Great, great Seba Giovinco. He gave a lesson to a lot of people here, out of the pitch, much more than he did in Toronto on the pitch.

The f u blabbering about? I love Gio. Watch him first alongside DeCeglie and Marchisio destroying Inter primavera in the Super Coppa Primavera in 2006, the time when Juve relegated to B. I remember DeCeglie scored 4 goals as left midfielder in that game. I watch Gio playing in Empoli too, from highlights, because of the FM game those year rated him as one of the best Juve youngster alongside Marchisio, Paro, and Nocerino. And i confirmed thats not too far fetched. Gio already playing like a seasoned pro player at Empoli. I always happy when Juventus manager gave him a chance. But Serie A defence will use anything to stop an attack move, and their effort will doubled whenever they face a big club. And there you go. Gio is just too small... one ball possession lost just like that. As a Juventino, as much i want Gio to show his magic in the senior team, i want Juve to have a more "guaranteed" winning factor. You know, back then Juve really struggle just to get back to the winning days...

Great video, great content with lot of information, videos and pictures. The problem with Giovinco in Italy is that trainers dont know how to handle with number 10s. Totti found his dimension in Rome, Baggio had a lot of difficulties. With such artists, you only have to give them the jersey nr. 10 and tell them "do what you want" and only control the play of the other 9 players on the pitch (plus goalkeeper). In this way Giovinco would have undoubtely been the leader of Juventus and Italy for years. Conte and Ventura have had no respect for Giovinco. Happy to see that he has had so much success in the MLS. It is not easy. Grande Sebastian!

Great video. Really wish he was taken seriosly by Italy. Giovinco thrived in MLS because was hungry and talented. Its sad how many young talented players never reach full potential because of the decision makers who manage them... Also, Despite what European managers especially international managers think, MLS is strong league and its academies and youth teams are producing some of the best young talent in the world at the moment. Guys like Alphonso Davies, Weston Mckennie, Gio Reyna, and Brendan Aaronson were all developed in MLS. Now clubs all over Europe are looking here trying to get a bargain on the Next Christian Pulisic.

The media doesnt know jack squad about Giovinco! I was only 16 years old when I remember Giovinco playing in Juventus and I remembered his dribbling, skills and passes he did for Juventus. I remembered him making a wonderful assist to Pogba and who won the game. I remembered him as one of the very few players in Europe who came to MLS and when he moved, it shocked me not because of how old he came in, but because of the exceptional quality and prestige level he was playing in Europe. Despite himself not being a regular player in Juventus top flight team, he still played a considerable amount of games but it came down to the management making mistakes for not putting him in the national team and club. For example, Italy not making the world cup in 60 years and omitting him. When he came to MLS with every passing year, the competition was bound to grow one way or another, with the amount of teams coming into the league, NYCFC, Orlando City, Atlanta United, LAFC, Minnesota United, and many players in the prime of their career coming to settle into the league for many different reasons. Players like Bojan Krkic, Giovani Dos Santos, Jonathan Dos Santos, Gregory Van Der Wiel, Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins who came into the league and did an amazing job! Now, if we think he is a poor or lazy player, how can one explain the simple truth and logic behind the stats and numbers? The management at Toronto Fc was so terribly bad, look at the star players that had came into the league but failed to continue their contracts after an argument or altercation with Giovinco, Jozy Altidore, and Gregory Van Der Wiel> Toronto FC fans would agreed with me! Please come back Giovinco!

Maradona did the same when he left Barcelona and moved to napoli. Everybody couldn't understand why he would go to a struggling club. He went there to be loved, and play for the people. Giovinco did the same, he could have went anywhere, but he went somewhere that made him happy and he could shine. The Toronto people appreciated it, and the love towards him, you can't buy that playing for a big club in Europe
