I know there's another video of this interview with English subs (not to discredit whoever translated it) but I found them a bit confusing at times so I hope this video manages to be more coherent and easy to follow for non-Romanian speakers.
The interviewer is Romanian journalist Andreea Esca. She’s well known in Romania thanks to her long-lasting career of over 20 years as a news anchor at Pro TV, which is often considered the most popular television channel in the country.

I think it is a self soothing behavior. People with anxiety find ways to self soothe. I used to suck my thumb as a child and twist the sheets with my free hand. I no longer suck my thumb of course but I still twist the sheets to go to sleep and I find myself twisting clothing between my fingers when anxious.

It has been theorised that these Roman settlers, intermingling with Dacians and developed a dialect. An alternative theory is that the Romanians came from south of the danube. It is proposed that after the fall of the Roman Empire, the various Romanised peoples of the balkan migrated northward into modern Romania. Either way we have a strong Latin culture

I love how Sebastian is so soft spoken and his voice is very relaxing. I play this video while doing house or office work even tho I don't understand w/o the subs. It's just soothing to hear him speak Romanian. Tho I dearly love my outgoing/high energy friends, high energy peeps and crowds drain me at the end of the day. Yeah I saw his English interviews and the dude is definitely different. He seems more "in character" when he's giving English interviews. I don't think it's a language thing, it's probably just that Romanian interviewers are naturally interested in asking more questions about Romania. As a result, this makes him open up about his childhood and that's why he seems more genuine. His English interviews are different because the questions are less personal and more focused on his current life in the US or the latest Hollywood gossip, therefore, he doesn't feel the need to reminisce about the past and open up.

As a kid who moved to a western country at a young age I actually relate to him in a way, as a third culture kid I know heaps of others who flat out refused to embrace their home ethnicity until around 18, that's when you understand you'll never actually be white/ "local Western" and that's when people around you also start becoming more interested your different experiences instead of making fun of you for being different.

It’s so fascinating to hear someone who speaks multiple languages. Because you can kind of tell that he doesn’t remember all the words (like when he asks her rhe word for step dad) and he switches back and forth, throwing in some English words. It’s so different learning a language on paper in a class and talking with someone, and to be talking in one language and have to use another in the same sentence to get your point across seems so exhausting. As much as I hate celebrity interviews on tv and radio, Romanian interviews tend to be more respectful than American interviews. Like, unless you're watching an old Kapatos show, anything with Măruță in it or a show designed to be a shethole, most interviews tend to be about the person they have invited and there's lots of info that's willingly given because the interviewers tend to be nice, especially in morning and daytime shows. I'll gladly watch 'Neața cu Răzvan și Dani than Ellen DeGeneres in the morning.

Yes, I'm here for Sebastian Stan (because uff), but also, as an armchair linguist. Romanian is such a fascinating language with an even more fascinating history. While the Romanian people aren't directly descended from the Romans, their language is a testament to Roman presence in the region, when they colonized the region of Dacia in what's now Romania. As such, the Romanian language retains distinctly Latin grammar and sentence structure. When spoken, it sounds like a Slav attempting to speak Latin. Very cool. Thank you for posting this interview!

This really was a great interview. I think he looks more comfortable when he speak romanian, or maybe its just my impression. I like how sometimes he switch back to english when he doesn't remember some words or just as an instinct cause he's more used to talk in english. He was very nervous but Im glad the woman helped him the whole time. Now this is how make good interviews.

@@veneps7862 to me it's like... a mix of french and russian, which is really the weirdest combination. it's got a few words that to me seem almost spanish, though i'd say mostly russian

@@cxsper3109 Romanian has some slavic influences. Portuguese (from Portugal) sounds like a combination between Romance languages and Russian, too. Even though, it doesn't have any slavic influences like Romanian. Or Greek which resembles a little bit with Spanish. Even though, they are not related. But Ancient Greek and Latin are related. Also, Latin borrowed many words from Ancient Greek.

Romanian is a latin language, like portuguese.Your language and romanian language are coming from the same roots

Ehh actually that's sort of how people who speak Romanian Carey themselves it's not flirting Romanian is just a love language so it sounds like it *a person who has a very large family who speak in similar love languages*

@@wisdom8282 Exactly! I live in Romania and I know Romanian perfectly, always lived here but my mother tongue is hungarian. This is really the usual way Romanians speak. This or the exactly opposite of this, the full on hate and circus mode, not really in between. I’m so glad that there are huge actors like him who originate from here tho!

If you know French you can pick up on certain words and their meaning but it's totally not like French such as dormir (sleeping) or deja (already). Romanian is a Romance language just like French (and Spanish, Italian).

That's because there was a period in Romanian history when they wanted to distance themselves from Slavic languages and needed more tecnological words. They thus borrowed words from French.

And it's pretty funny because now in Romanian there are so many words that have a Slavic version and a Romance one. However, most Slavic versions are considered "old-fashion" and used mainly by the Church. As an example, for the word "hope", there's "nădejde" (similar to Russian, etc.) and "speranță" (similar to Italian, etc.)

Stan is my age and I left Romania when I was 8 too (to Germany). What is remarkle about Stan is that he doesn't have an accent in English. Usually it's imprinted already in your vocal cords when you're 8 and it's almost impossible to get rid of. The inner dialogue language remains in your mother tongue too btw.

My mom is Romanian and my dad has lived in America his entire life, my biggest regret is not diving into my mothers culture and language. I know some basics of the language and I’m still trying to learn because she always yells at me in Romanian 😂 but I like this interview with the captions it’s helping me figure words out 🤣
