Massive Newcastle fan here and I was so gutted to see Jonny leave but it had to be right for him: he’d been such a Talisman for England and hero for Newcastle that I had to pay attention and loved watching him end his career in glory at Toulon. Rather suspect that him speaking French so well meant he melted the hearts of the French who adopted him as their own - and why wouldn’t you?! I know some often put Dan Carter ahead, but for me: he’s my No 10 of all time.

People remember him for his kicking but he was the best No 10 ever (sorry Mr Carter) simply because of his hard tackling.

And yet all that time when i tuned in on a saturday afternoon alll those games i remember where he was amazing he was struggling with mental health. The most admired young man in England at the time loved and adored and yet the pressure be piled on himself nearly broke him. When i read his biography i was almost in tears with my jaw on the floor. We never know anyone really.

I remember seeing him once at KX station! I remember everyone used to say little Johnny Wilkinson? Although not tall, he was a wide as a barn door and everything thing on him was muscle. What people forget is that Toulon also gave Wilkinson in return what he gave them. He’s one of the greatest players in history and had done everything at the international level but had never had the opportunity to be the very best at club level until Toulon. Was perfect finish to his career and well deserved winning European silverware

Khemt291223 mouais... comparer Cantona et Wilkinson faut quand même oser. Le premier est un connard arrogant dont le talent était quand même limité si on le compare à d'autres joueurs, actuels ou passés. Le second c'est la classe + le talent + l'humilité + le travail + un palmarès exceptionnel. Par contre je suis tout à fait d'accord sur le fait qu'il a pu changer le regard de certains Français sur les Anglais, et c'est tant mieux car cette rivalité est absurde.

Khemt291223 si on devait faire un classement des joueurs de foot qui ont marqué l'histoire de leur sport par leur talent, je pense que Cantona ne serait même pas dans le "top 50". Wilkinson tu peux le mettre sans problème dans les 10 plus grands joueurs de l'histoire du rugby, et là je ne parle que de talent. De plus Cantona était surtout apprécié à MU, alors que Wilko a mis toute la planète rugby d'accord, y compris les Français, qu'ils soient supporters du RCT ou non. Enfin, je pense qu'un mec comme Henry a bien plus marqué l'histoire du championnat anglais et du foot mondial que Cantona...
