The best rugby player I’ve ever seen hands down. I used to get to twickenham early to watch him deliberately hit the post from the side 7 out of 10 times. Legend. The greatest!

When he was near the end of his career in Toulon, I went down to watch a couple of matches. I couldn't believe what I was seeing as his hands had become incredible. He played a blind pass behind his back against Toulouse at the Stade Velodrome, setting up a try and his play was breathtaking. He was the highest points scorer of that and the next season,, winning back-to-back European championships and scored some beautiful tries as well as controlled games with his kicking. What really got me is after the matches, no matter how exhausted he was, he went out to meet the supporters, spoke to them in impeccable French and spent lots of time signing autographs. An incredible player, a real gentleman and if I am a tenth of who he is, I'd be proud.
@saltsalty38075 жыл бұрын
To me, that's is what puts him above Carter. He went stronger than Carter did at the end of his career, winning everything he could with Toulon, and retiring on a high. DC, as much as he was a great player for Racing, got nowhere near, and ended up going to Japan (for the money most likely), where rugby is played at a lower level. I rate DC on the same level as Wilko internationally, but he was also surrounded by the best players in the world his whole career, Wilko had a world class team in 2003, but then spearheaded England's run to the 2007 final. We all know that without injury, Wilko would probably hold the points record, and the number one spot for 10 in rugby history.

The term legend is thrown around far too easily these days but there is absolutely no doubt this man is one! Very hard hitting for a #10, flawless place kicking and drop goal technique. Not the quickest or most free-flowing but England didn't play that style. Extremely humble and he was loved and respected wherever he went - be it Toulon, Newcastle or Twickenham. I still remember watching the 2003 World Cup final and I'd never screamed at the TV so loudly beforehand; nor have I since!

As a kiwi I've always had great admiration for JW. not only could he kick off both feet. but he was a great tackler & was a top bloke too. I remember at the British & Irish lions tour of 2005 in NZ. it was after the 2nd test vs all blacks. ( the game Dan Carter made a name for himself in) Wilkinson hurt his shoulder & instead of going straight to hospital he signed a few autographs for a few rugby fans. one of those fans was my lil cousin. who was absolute buzzing the whole night. it was only the next day I learnt how bad his injury was. what a legend.

Loved AND respected. Ethereal talent. But it’s what’s INSIDE that makes him special. Every single story I’ve heard from people who have had off-camera, zero publicity interactions with him is he has TIME for them. He is polite and GIVES of himself. Tremendous role model.
@-NemoMeImpuneLacessit7 жыл бұрын
His sheer professionalism, diligence and hard work to get as good as he was is an example to young players everywhere. His constant striving to improve, to overcome injuries show an indomitable spirit, which coupled with a quiet and humble personality made him an icon in two countries, England and France. He is respected and admired across the globe , as are many top players, but the adulation of two nations, who normally hold opposite opinions, shows the measure of the man.

If there was a need for a Rugby ambassador, Jonny Wilkinson would be a perfect candidate for the post. The man was the epitome of the modern professional rugby player, he trained long and hard and even thou he had a permanent target painted on him, I can’t think of a intentionally dirty tackle made by him. It was a pity to lose him to the French, but with his injuries, I suppose the warmer weather help ease any pain, along with the pay checks... In 2003 when that ball dropped on to his foot a nation held it’s breathe, then!! Millions of people shouted, cheered and jumped for joy. When will the Queen pull her finger out and knight Jonny, a CBE isn’t enough. When two cyclists are knighted for riding a push bike, Jonny and others in that team put their bodies properly on the line for their country.

One of the greatest ever, 2003 was special but 2007 more so. He’d hardly played since the 2003 final, if I remember correctly there was doubt about him coming back in and being able to do it but dragged England to that final and nearly won it. He carried falcons when around aswell. When I heard the french supporters sing his national anthem to him on his way out, it’s simply testament to the man to receive that! Legend
