Just a note on the tape drum: You wouldn't clean the head drum w/ cotton. Just a corner of regular copy paper for those. Trim out a section, Wet it, apply as much pressure as you like. "Buff it out" with the dry side of the copy paper- very important. I give it about three rotations (91% isopropyl alcohol) with the wet side and three rotations dry. The audio is noticeably crispy + clear within the first 5 minutes of "play" with *each* proper wipe of the tape drum. It could take *more* than 1 attempt because I clean mine frequently.

Really great, and like you I use the alcohol wipes myself to clean the tape transport mechanism, and absolutely correct in removing the auto head cleaner I have seen heads actually cracked caught from the shredding of the auto head cleaner so I remove it from any VCR i have or service, may I ask... i have been looking online for the Tape Transport/Tape Guide Grease which as you know lubricates all parts of the mechanism, Could you please let me know where I can find this Grease Thank you.

Thanks for you tutorial. I'd like to try this but I'd like to see how you remove the area from the case.

+Paul Beauparlant It varies so much in every VCR that there is absolutely no way to make a "one size fits all" video. In this one I just had to take a out a few screws and then the entire mechanism disconnected from the main circuit board, but most others are far more complicated than this. Most of the cleaning I show in the video (at least for the most essential components, the tape heads) can be done without removing the whole mechanism.

+Sebi's Random Tech that's what I'll do then. Just unscrew the cover and clean the visible parts from where they sit without removing. thanks again!

I just want to point out, never use wd-40 for lubricating sensitive things like this, for cameras I've used sewing machine oil. Wd-40 will do more damage then good, will work for a little while, but over time it will cause damage to these type of things.
