i saw these guys live at the us festival and yes, they were great live. but the audio from lay it on the line was not from that same performance as the video. it became obvious at many moments in the video, but was most obvious on that held note when he was yards away from the mic. i think they cheated a little with after the fact overdubs. i'm not criticizing them. a lot of live videos have been altered after the fact.

Hi. Just because they were not into drugs or partying, surely they didn't get that much attention. Live shows were too awesome. Rik is a Maestro! So many great music he made after leaving the group. In my noble opinion, he is the best guitar player all around!

There’s no backing vocal tracks on this performance. What you’re hearing is a well placed delay by the sound man. These bands from the 70s and 80s used delays on vocals to a perfection.

A delay rack unit with a hold button. I had a relatively cheap one back in the 80's with the same feature. I'm sure their equipment was top of the line, for the period. Maybe a Lexicon.

@@kurtwilhite2960 I think you're right about the syncing issue being Sebs production. Probably easier to get quality audio to us watching if it's separate audio piped directly to his video production. And he doesn't know it's an issue or doesn't care to time it right. Very disconcerting, detracts from the enjoyment 😟

Rik is a virtuoso guitarist and vocalist...every album also had a fantastic acoustic number...Rik wrote for Guitar Player magazine, and is a MONSTER guitar player and vocalist. Their whole US Festival performance was epic. I have been a fan since '77...they were huge at our high school in southwest Indiana....saw them four times..first time in '78. Rik is mind blowing...as good live. Strve Perry once asked how he hit those high notes so effortlessly when Triumph opened for Journey at the Rose Bowl. Virtuoso voice and guitarist...his acoustic duets with Steve Morse are mind blowing. Pretty much quit rock and became a jazz guitarist.

Best concert of my life. 1983 US Festival in Devore California Sunday, May 29 a week after my 17th birthday. Best weekend of my life. Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions and Van Halen finished the show. There was over 350,000 metalhead on this day rocking out in the desert. Day one was new wave music and day three was basically classic rock. Neither of those days came close to the amount of people as this day. I was lucky enough to be under one of those water cannons which basically save my ass because it was hot as hell. Triumph was by far the best band that day, followed by the Scorpions and Judas Priest. I’ve been to hundreds of shows in my life, clubs, areas and giant festivals, this show by far was the best. It was definitely the biggest party I’ve ever been to.

Since you were asking if there was a backing vocal track -- there wasn't, but on the first song the video & audio were way out of sync. For the second song the video & audio were also out of sync, but also it wasn't a live recording like you suggested. It was a live video with the studio recording. Also a lot of the second song was missing -- the entire intro and a slow break in the middle. "Hold On" was a very layered song on the studio recording, which meant they had to play it differently live. I saw them several times live including being there for the first song at the US Festival, and they really were all that. They never really got their due in the US (partly because US marketers didn't know how to handle two Canadian power trios being in existence at the same time, and Rush got most of the attention), which made them underappreciated back then and more obscure today. Go down the Rabbit hole with them and you will be very pleasantly surprised. BTW, Rik Emmett stayed active until pretty recently, converting his show to acoustic and gigging with one other guitarist (Dave Dunlop). Was able to see that show in 2017 or so when they swung through California. Last comment -- I'm also a guitarist, and Emmett is a huge influence. Check out some of his acoustic solo pieces like Midsummer's Daydream.

@@carlgibbons5777 - There are lots of reasons for a video on the internet not to have audio and video in sync. I have the DVDs and they’re in sync, yet in a couple spots, Rik is quite far from the mic for the volume of his voice to be chalked up to reverb. The fact that this YT video is out of sync makes it look like that’s the whole problem, but it’s also got a vocal overdub. Rik Emmett is one of my favorite singers and I’m not trying to diminish his talent. Most live releases have some overdubs; it’s commonplace. A bum note here or there or a technical issue during the performance gets fixed in the studio. Some live releases have more that’s fixed than what actually was played on the day. Some are said to have been recorded completely in the studio, such as Kiss Alive. I don’t think Triumph had to fix too much, but I do think there are some vocal overdubs on their DVD releases. There’s no shame in it and none intended on my part. ✌🏼

Always great to see someone discover this band for the first time. Been a fan since 78 and followed Rik Emmett's career until he retired a few years ago. His smooth jazz music is definitely worth a listen.

Great band. "Hold On" is a great tune. Other favorites, that don't have a million others reacting to them: "All the King's Horses/Carry on the Flame" "If Only"

They also used a decent amount of reverb, so that note continued past moving away from the microphone.

As a singer and performer (and huge Rik Emmett fan) for decades, it looks to me like some of Rik’s vocals were overdubbed in the studio. It doesn’t take anything away from him as a singer, though. He still sang it!

@@crusheverything4449 as a Singer and performer myself for over 50 years I agree that it's quite possible they cleaned up his vocals in the studio.

Seb, that was awesome when you picked up your guitar and just played that part!! I am a die hard rocker, 67 years old, so I was blessed to grow up with fantastic music from the 60’s, 70’s and the rest, and I am discovering new bands daily. Everyone talks about the 80’s music, (which was the best ever made), but very rarely does anyone give any credit to the FANTASTIC rock bands of the 70’s, and there were many!!! There never would have been the 80’s glam/hair bands, or any of the great 80’s music without the great rock bands of the 70’s. I admin some 80’s rock groups, and I am always astonished, and sad that these amazing bands dont get the credit they deserve!! I hope this taste of a 70’s band inspires you to check out more of these trailblazer bands. I could name soooo many, but I will restrain myself, and just suggest checking out “April Wine”. Keep on this journey, you won’t regret it I promise.

Triumph was part of My first concert in 1983 (along with Journey, Eddie Money, Bryan Adams and Night Ranger) Rik is a virtuoso guitar player. He can play in virtually any style (jazz, blues, classical, flamenco, etc) He had an acoustic guitar piece on every triumph album. The drummer Gil Moore also sing lead vocal on a bunch of songs. For Gil singing, check out When The Lights Go Down, Tear The Roof Off, Spellbound, Follow Your Heart, Nature’s Child, American Girls and more. For more of Rik, I suggest Never Surrender and Fight The Good Fight both from the Live US Festival concert also, Rik had an extensive solo career after leaving Triumph.

You're absolutely right about what they accomplish with just three musicians. They're obviously all masters of their instruments, but I love the parts where they harmonize. You said it's such a full sound and I couldn't put it any better than that.

Magic Power and Hold On are their 2 best songs. You didn't get the entire version of Hold On. Check out the songs "I'll Never Let You Go", "Can't Stop Me Loving You", "Everybody Loves Eileen" and "She's Gone" (studio version. Not the shortened live acoustic version) by Steelheart.
