Yes! I want him to react to these two songs more than any other reaction right now because he's a Christian, and so openly emotional. I hope he does it right, and does part 1&2 together, and does the required leg work to fully appreciate the piece, I.e. learning about Maynard's mom and then first listening to Judith by APC.

This song is such a great example of how to do an absolutely epic guitar solo without playing a million notes/scales. Adam’s textures and the playing within the song is what make him one of my favorite guitarists and how I have always approached the instrument… not nearly as well as him, but being around the same age as Adam, I totally hear his influences and relate to him so well. This song just fn rocks.

Once, I saw Tool play in Boulder, Colorado. It was a beautiful experience for so many reasons. One of those reasons: after Tool had finished the concert, they all came to the forefront of the stage and embraced each other with smiles. It seemed so sincere and genuine. It was touching. I think the love they have for each other runs deep despite their differences. There is wisdom in this for us, I think.

People always talk about Danny, MJK, and Adam, but hardly anyone mentions Justin Chamberlain. But so much of Tool's sound is built on the bedrock he lays down, with so many brilliant bass lines over the decades. And the way he and Danny Carey lock together like perfectly cut gears is phenomenal. Every member of the band is the most important member of the band.

The way this song is structured, it takes you from the calm before the storm, builds up, hits you with the "storm" of music. Then you enter the eye of the storm, it's calm, lulls you a bit. Then the tail end of the storm hits you as it passes away from you... then clear skies at the end, a mirror musically of the intro. The song is a literal hurricane.

"Non typical time signatures...its not often a band can make themsound so good...how do they..." These are called Polyrhythms and only the more accomplished bands know how to make them work. TOOL, specifically Danny, is Masterclass when it comes to Poylrhythms. Rush was another one but there aren't many out there that can do it sonically pleasing throughout a song, much less base their entire musical career on them like TOOL has done. So, it's through the Masterclassed polyrhythms, along with the philosophical meanings, that seem to change yet stay the same that keeps you listening for 15 minute songs and not get bored. It keeps your attention thru tactical changes with instruments and words that results in the pleasing awe you experience. This why there is a TOOL Army....we've known this for 30 years....

Before fear inoculum came out, I never really experienced listening to new tool music properly. I got their early catalogue by osmosis, and even 10000 days I didn't really appreciate initially as the incredible work of art it is. Being able to experience fear inoculum as a new work and digest each song as its own has been incredible. I will never forget where I was when I first heard pneuma, or the big ass grin on my face the whole way. It's a pleasure to watch you experiencing the same thing, with the knowledge of how much you still have to listen to... Love your reactions dude, and I sympathise with the kiddo. My oldest didn't sleep a whole night until she was 2, I've never been as tired as I was her first 6 months to a year... It's definitely character building!

for me, the "Victim of your certainty and therefore, your doubt's not an option" hits hard as one of the final lines. So often folks are so belligerently set in their ways, that the concept of seeing any other option is unthought of. And like you said, I am sure many listeners, even those of the "TooL Army" would tell you this is about the um.. Former President.. But, no, you nailed it... it isn't just politics; its all of us now. we have become so fractured and jaded and angry; sadly by the design of others, that we start to feel cornered, and that we are nearing a point that any reaction or action that would quell this constant ... mitigation of response... we are all allowed our own thoughts, ideas, and words; but when you start to think that you have dominion over others; that you can stifle them; you must also know, that, a dammed river causes the greatest floods. we are told, on a nears constant basis, that WE are the cause for the problems of the world, be it environmental, cultural, judiciary, health, or even self-realizations... yet, it is the ones that could, and have claimed to be able to fix these issues, that are at fault. That is the hypocrisy... And, a Tempest will be true to its nature...

funny that its the current president bringing about the problem. Yes, the former was a jerk, and had a big mouth, but at least he knew where he was at! This idjit has no clue whatsoever. Its not as 1 sided an issue as your media has convinced you.

@@tiamat29 I was not trying to make it political, as, that is one of the points of TooL. Yes, politics is a thing that matters, as is the environment, and the judiciary, and the over all well being of the living things. It is when we begin to except life is a thing that happens, and only change what we can; then we are alive.

The beginning verses/chorus' are actually in 4/4 timing, the guitar accents are just placed in unusual spots in the measure that make it sound like its an odd time, the Pot is the same way..the bass line cycles in 3's but the time signature is still 4/4. Rhythmic tricks like that are what make them ingenious imo

I always love to see how comments there are so quickly! I'm usually not even up this early. lol No matter what anyone says, this song's main focus was our past President. Maynard would never admit that, but he doesn't have to. It's quite clear. ;)

I seem to hear inferences in so much of Maynard's writing. The video of 'The Arsonist,' by Puscifer. Makes this obvious, his distain of the man that must not be named, lol.

It seems most people think this song was about Trump. To each their own opinion of course but I tend to agree more with your interpretation that it is not just a single political figure but groups and those with hidden agendas that lure people to believe in a false sense of hope. Feeling the need for change in a political climate by overthrowing (democratically or otherwise) just allows that "tempest" to fester and bring havoc from a different side. If that makes sense. Yes looking forward to your next Tool reaction.

Just wanted to add something else....I love Tool, but I love the band Rush, even more. Odd time signatures are their specialty. Check out La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, Xanadu and 2112

Such a great song and love your reaction brother!!. But I'll be honest, "The Tempest" was my least favorite one on the album when I heard it all the way through for the first time. Now I think that it is probably one of the best songs that TOOL has ever written. It really takes a lot to write a 15 minute song and it not have it get redundant/repetitive. Very few bands can do that - Porcupine Tree & Dream Theater are two others that come to mind - but Adam, Maynard, Justin, and Danny are the masters at it. That has what has kept me being a hardcore fan of theirs for 30 years now. Also, like others here who have commented, don't overlook "Culling Voices" on this album. It's not the best song they've ever written, but it is still highly underrated and an amazing work of art. Take it from me bro, let your little girl sleep. I have two kids of myself (girl 9 and boy 18), and I remember that moment when they finally slept through the night and it was magical (like finally)!!! 👶👶

5:16 - Well Justin goes between 4/4 and 13/8 for some five minutes (!) in the backgound from around 3m46s onwards. (You'll get into that part at 08:39 on this video) Here's a link to a bass cover with tabs if you want to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHOlkH6ged57aKc (LeoBassCovers channel, nice bass covers there btw). I would really recommend you check it out at your own time. :)

I would suggest Jambi. It is about Maynard's son and is one of my favorites. There is also a live version of the song here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqawZGeal5h9pJY. Since you are going to see them live soon.

I think it’s about his son too. But I’ve also seen many say it’s about his wife. Both make sense. And like any good art it should fit your view and help you. Great song!

Not to be the “actually” guy, but actually this song is in 21. The combinations of time signatures fluctuate a little throughout, but they all combine through the phrases to 21. The main combination being three bars of 5/8 plus a bar of 6/8. Thanks for the reactions, man 🙏

Danny is the master of those time signatures, he has a past of A. Crowley reading, His time signatures are like different levels of some inner meditation that involves some trance like state. Something like that...🌀

My youngest had gerd. It was a nightmare, up every 45 min. He wouldn't take any volume of food, he refused breast milk(probably because breast milk is slightly acidic). Frequent emesis and restlessness. Had top switch him to formula and he was prescribed an antacid. It got better. It felt like it went on forever but it got better. I feel for you.
