Jeff Beck said he wanted the guitar to be able to express the same range of emotion as the human voice, so he worked for years to master the combination of whammy bar, fader, harmonics and finger picking to express it. His version of "Over the Rainbow" is another one that will touch your soul.
@rachmann5165 күн бұрын
He worked on his cars mostly. But like some musicians, the practise is going on in the mind, essentially cutting down the time he needs to work with his guitar to a minimum.
@danielceo46949 күн бұрын
What to say about Jeff Beck! He was an amazing guitar player. To attempt to answer your question, Jeff Beck could convey emotions through his guitar playing the way singers can through their vocals. Plus, he was a tasteful musician: he had the chops to play all over a song, but he instinctively knew the right notes to hit at the right moments; he knew when it was appropriate to play and when not to, he knew how to let the music breathe and live. I hope that made sense. I've seen him in concert a couple of times, so I've witnessed him in action in front of me and this is the best way I can describe how he did it. And he could do it all--first time I saw his show, he was playing guitar over techno beats, the last time I saw him, he was jamming with B.B. King, that's his versatile he was! Back in the mid sixties, Beck replaced Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds and played on hits like "Heartful Of Soul" and "Shapes Of Things". Then he left and formed The Jeff Beck group with a couple of young musicians he discovered, by the names of Rod Stewart and Ron Wood and they had some impressive records, like "Rock My Plimsoul" and "Plenty (Water Down the Drain". In the mid seventies, Beck had some great success making jazz-rock fusion albums, featuring songs like "Freeway Jam" and "Led Boots" and "El Becko". He did all sorts of music. I was incredibly impressed when Jeff Beck covered "What's Going On" with Johnny Depp. Any one of these aforementioned songs is worth checking out! And there's at least a dozen more I could probably mention, too! Thanks for this reaction.

He said at the start of the video,he's not a player, he started playing, but went into singing instead. I agree, if you're a guitarist, you know Jeff Beck, but outside of that, I understand why he's not as famous as his talent suggests he should be. It is the songs. Not that there aren't great ones, just that there aren't widely popular hits. The reason Clapton is more famous than Beck, is Clapton has Layla, Tears in Heaven... Songs that have endured over the years. And Beck has a bunch of brilliant instrumental tunes. Sadly, those aren't the type that get much radio play, so they didn't get passed down generation to generation. I was born in the early 80s, the reason I love bands like the Beatles, The Who, Beach Boys, etc is that I grew up hearing their songs on the car radio. I didn't get into Jeff Beck until years later.

Jeff Beck's career stretches back to his days as lead guitar for The Yardbirds, the band that launched the careers of Beck, Page, and Clapton--who together form the foundation of rock music--even thought he band itself was only active five years. Beck was always known as one of the instrument's top artists who created sounds unlike any other. His imprint on rock is unequaled. No one but him would think to perform this classical number on guitar. A couple others have done Bach's Bourree, but not this.

But unlike so many others in the rock scene in the earlier '70s he didn't die, or run out of classics after 10 or 15 years as stars. No. He just got better every year for 50 more years. No one is more expressive on electric guitar than Jeff Beck, I love, love his playing. He would do things like pluck a note, with the volume at a relatively low volume, and then as the note is sustaining, he would manually turn up the volume knob, so that the volume would increase as the note sustained. This makes it sound like the human voice, because one can do this with the voice, whereas normally, you pluck a guitar note and it's max volume is at the start and then it decays as the note sustains. So in addition to superb control of the whammy bar, manual vibrato with the left hand, and bending the strings, and controlling the volume, he could make the guitar sing in ways few others could. And what moved you I think is you feel the emotion in the way he's playing, when his guitar is singing, just like with the human voice.

Beck was one of the three great guitarists who emerged from the seminal band The Yardbirds in the 1960s - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Clapton elevated blues guitar to rock and set a new standard for guitarists. Beck introduced effects like feedback and the Wah peddle and explored many new rhythms and sounds that later became standard sounds. He was a big influence on Jimmy Page, who followed him in The Yardbirds. I highly recommend listening to Beck's first two solo albums Truth and Beckola. Many regard Truth as being the first true hard rock album ever recorded. It is also the first album where vocalist Rod Stewart and later Rolling Stone guitarist Ron Wood achieved wide recognition. Beck's cover of the blues classic I Ain't Superstitious is worth it, with his Wah peddle guitar mimicking a cat. For a bit of trivia - the last lineup of the Yardbirds changed their name to The New Yardbirds. When they started to record their first album under that name, they realized they needed to change to yet another name to reflect their new sound. Hence Led Zeppelin was born.

Hey Sebs! I'm so glad you're discovering Jeff Beck! An absolute guitar wizard (one of the greatest of all time) in the same class with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, etc., who all knew each other, as they were all members of the Yardbirds at different times as very young dudes. A big part in the whole British Invasion thing of the sixties and seventies. Jeff was the one who had the most tricks up his sleeve technique wise. Always playing extremely innovative and edgy stuff, with possibly the most incredible touch (as displayed in this little number) of anybody. Focused pretty heavily on instrumentals (because he could!) throughout his career, but he could rock out with the best of any guitar virtuoso you could think of! Always with his "signature" sound like all guitar legends have. He'd play a Les Paul on occasion, but that friggin Stratocaster is what he's known for! Blow by Blow was a big album for him. Kind of a jazz rock crossover instrumental album that doesn't have a bad song on it. He's played with and collaborated with a lot of music legends over his long career. I could make a zillion suggestions, but essentially anything he's done from any era you're going to enjoy. Cheers Bro!

Eric left the Yardbirds and recommended Jimmy Page who had a good gig doing studio work and turned them down, but he recommended Jeff Beck Later the bassist ,Paul Samwell-Smith, left and was replaced by Chris Dreja who was playing rhythm guitar. Page came in later as rhythm guitar. When Jeff left, Jimmy Page replaced him. Thus the yardbirds had 3 of the greatest guitarists in their band. Interestingly all three had known each other as youths and lived semi-close to each other.

Eric Clapton has a rehab center called Crossroads, too. Jeff Beck was such an incredible talent, it is a shame so few know about him. We lost him in Jan 2023 to Bacterial Meningitis. It took him quickly and I was deeply saddened by his loss. Jeff was such an emotional guitar player, yet he could get sounds out of a guitar like nobody else ever has. The best guitar players often cite Beck as the absolute best, if there is really any such thing as the best...but he was truly a special kind of talent. Brian May has a song called Nothin' But Blue that came up on my feed one day. I clicked on it though I had never heard of the song. Something about the guitar solo on that song had me sobbing so hard I could barely catch my breath. I listened to it again the next morning with the same reaction. I think certain chord combinations hit us in some kind of a way. I later read up on the song and learned that Brian had written that song the night before Freddie Mercury died. I guess it was that pain that he had transfered into those notes that I was feeling. Guitars transfer so much from the player into the music and it comes out and touches us in a deep and special way. It resounds in our soul and into our bones. Thank you for reacting to this outstanding artist.

Jeff Beck created sound that meant something. No playing notes, riffs or shredding just to show off. He was a consummate artist and he could reach the soul.

So glad to be frequently reminded of the great Jeff Beck. He was a "one off".

Jeff Beck is one of the finest, most soul full vocalists in musical history, & he doesn’t even sing‼️
