I could not wait for this to come out, since i so very much enjoyed your first 2 Podcasts ! I have to say, yet again, Erika you rock! You chose such a lovely person to interview and i learned so much about and from Pete Buttigieg ! I don't fly a lot , but the few times i did, with a disabled child, have been very stressful because i have experienced being at the airlines mercy! Now going forward being armed with this information I feel like i might have the upper hand next time and feel less helpless if forbid my daughters wheelchair again takes almost 2 hours to appear on the luggage belt.. Thank you for making my morning fun and informative, holding my first cup of coffee for the day! Also glad you post the links for a quick reference.

Great video, and awesome questions. Thisinformation is always so hard to find, keep track of, etc. However, I did have one question related to delays or cancellations. In the video, its made clear that the airline needs to take care of food, hotel, etc. That's great. What isn't clear, is what about the hotel (assuming you aren;t going home) at your destination. Many hotels, will not do a cancellation within 24 hours. So then, your flight gets delayed or cancelled, the airline takes care of the food and hotel, but since its within the 24 hours, the destination hotel is still going to charge you. There should be something to take care of that too. If it's not your fault that you aren't there to use the hotel room that you booked, you should not have to pay for it.

Erika, I need clarification on two things: The full cash refund in the case of cancellation - is that literal cash? Paper money in hand? Or is it a full refund to your original payment method that will take 10 to 14 days to reach your payment method’s account? Because sometimes you need that money immediately in order to book another flight to continue on to your destination. Otherwise, you’re potentially stuck in the airport. That leads to the second query regarding airlines being required to provide food and accommodations when a delay or cancellation strands a passenger overnight. (And what constitutes a “significant delay”?) If that is the case, then is there literally no reason to see people sleeping across terminal chairs and benches because of cancellations? We’ve all seen that happen, or even experienced it personally. Shouldn’t the airport personnel be informing those folks they are entitled to a free hotel room?

Thank you Erika, I am flying in July 2023 to Ireland through Toronto's Pierson Airport. Originally we had a 4 hour layover, but just this morning they changed our flight and now we have a 7-hour layover. The 7 hour layover is now both ways. I am so mad because I did not upgrade to Business class to now have a 7 hour delay in Toronto both ways. Any recommendations?

Thank you so much for this episode!! Such great information. I know you said you aren't interested in the fine print of software, however, I feel this could be such a good area for you to bring awareness of what software has people agree to. This is such a huge issue not only for adults but especially our youth and adolescents. When we agree to terms and conditions of software apps, there are some that we agree for them to READ OUR TEXT MESSAGES. With your platform, this could be a great area for you to bring awareness to!! Thanks for all you do!!!

What is flights canceled, you are still at home same day of flight & they rebook you for flight rerouting you to a layover city that causes you to arrive later than your original booked flight? Plus you get a seat option for only outside isle that you have to pay for vs your window seat that was open and no pay was needed to select?? Does this all just fall under canceled refund due to 1hr later arrival?

I was told by Alaska airlines that my flight was documented as FIRST weather delay and SECOND Mechanical error.. And because they ONLY go by the FIRST indication that is what they use for accommodations???? Is this correct? I was also told by Wanda in Customer care that they are NOT OBLIGATED to give me a cash refund they can give me a voucher and that is going above and beyond.

Ok so I've READ the fine print. The DOT website says: Limits on Baggage Liability - Domestic Baggage Liability For DOMESTIC flights, DOT regulation allows airlines to limit their liability for a lost, damaged, or delayed bag. Airlines are free to pay more than the limit, but are not required to do so. The maximum liability amount allowed by the regulation is $3,800. HOWEVER, the Southwest website seems to have created a LOOPHOLE with their verbiage on their Contract of Carriage. Under 7) Baggage, i. Limitations of Liability, 1. it states: The liability, if any, of the Carrier for loss of, damage to, or delay in the delivery of Checked or carryon Baggage and/or its contents (so here it says they are liable for delay) but then under i. in that same section it states: The Carrier will compensate the Passenger for reasonable, documented damages incurred as a direct result of the loss of, damage to, or substantially delayed delivery of such Baggage up to the limit of liability My question is in the "SUBSTANTIALLY DELAYED" wording... wouldn't this leave too much open to interpretation for the airlines to determine: "Oh yes, 1 month is what we consider substantially delayed" whereas you might consider substantially delayed as more than 1 hour... how can you protect yourself from the airline just leaving you hanging by saying "your luggage wasn't *substantially delayed* enough by their standards" to be liable for compensating you anything?
