Your website is a soulless husk without the comment section. Sure, there were some lunatics in there but for the most part, it was a respectful and engaging conversation with varying viewpoints. Get over yourselves and open it back up. In the long run, getting rid of the comment section will kill the website and if you wait too long, no one will come back.

Just a comment on how you mentioned the folks raised in the Midwest are not used to championships. I was born in the Midwest in the 50’s and we had a lot of great teams from the center of the country and the western side as well. Occasionally someone from the east would poke their head in but not often. And although we did not have a “national championship” game per se, one of the bowl games would often determine the champion so all eyes were on that game. SEC is a relative latecomer and has been dominating recently, but you have a lot more college football history than just the last 20 years. And other parts of the country dominated much longer than that.
