@@Chips-Dubbo that BoB quote was always hilariously stupid because the vast majority of pre war vehicle production for Germany was literally those companies, which kept working for Germany during ww2 and were taken over after the war declaration on the US. to keep it short: - they had the motors, they lost because they ran out of oil reserves by the end of 41(a year before the battle of this video) - "what were they thinking" = win the war in a blitzkrieg which they did in the west and were close to doing in the east

Certainly the pivotal battle during the North African campaign. Rommel's supply line across the Mediterranean were getting hammered, and his usual unpredictable manuvering was limited to the south by the impassable Quattara Depression. If the Afrika Korps was at full strength, they might have pushed on to control the Suez Canal, which was Britain's lifeline to NZ and Australia, then on to possibly take control of the oil fields of the Caucasus. But, it is what is is.

@@Seriona1 True, but they would have needed to take these territories from the British first. With 5 German divisions and 10 Italian divisions, They could have taken Egypt, assuming so many resources weren't spent fighting the USSR.

@@taintedwaste From what we know now, several Arab's in the Trans-Jordan area were not happy with the British and Germany was trying to get Turkey to join the Axis, maybe with the Suez captured, they might let troops pass or join. Clearly a what if but it's not the hell marry people make it out plus if the Suez is open to Axis, this means Italians can better reinforce the area since at the time of Afrika Korp, they only had a single front to fight.
@taintedwaste
@taintedwaste 16 күн бұрын
@@Seriona1 At best, I think Germany would have reached most of African egypt, although Germany and Italy had many divisions, so did Britain. Also consider that if Germany reached Cairo and then the suez, there would be a canal that they'd have to cross to reach Sinai and then Palestine. Britain could have defended this canal well, preventing any axis advance beyond this river. If you consider that south of Cairo the roads are probably bad, advances would be very slow.

It would seem that on the surface but not exactly. Many of those divisions were comprised of British Regiments which fought under Divisions named after different regions in the Commonwealth. For example my Great Grandfather's regiment at the battle was the 32nd Field Regiment Royal Artillery but fought under the Indian 4th Infantry Division. Most other Regiments under this Division were British.

The Greek government went into exile in Egypt. A significant percentage of the greek navy and air force ( and very few land forces personnel) fled to Egypt before the allied withdrawal from Crete. Most of the Hellenic Navy kept fighting under Commonwealth leadership and Greek pilots were flying with British planes. Greece is a very similar story to Poland in WW2, even after losing their homeland, they kept fighting.
