After securing the beachhead and a critical high ground above it and after the annihilation of large numbers of Japanese following their failed counterattack, the troops of the 3rd Amphibious Corps reached the turning point of the Battle of Guam.
In the following ten days, marine and army troops pushed north and fought remnants of the Japanese island garrison on the harsh terrain of northern Guam.

I was a young Marine Cpl on Guam in 1984. I watched some of the celebrations on the 40th anniversary of Guam's liberation. Didn't have a clue of what my brother Marines went through to secure the island. There were still a lot of civilians alive that lived through the Japanese occupation. They thought very highly of, and were extremely thankful to the Marines. Almost 40 years since than and I find myself feeling guilty not really knowing or appreciating the sacrifices and suffering that our military and civilians went through. Well done videos like this keep their stories alive.

I was a Marine stationed in the middle of Guam 1971-1972, we used to go Boonie stomping south of Fena Lake very close to where Shoichi Yokoi was hiding. Little did we know a WW2 Japanese soldier was likely watching us. The jungle was amazingly thick, very hard to get thru. We also explored the many Japanese caves in the area, tiny entrances with vast chambers.

Yea, he could possibly have been. As freshmen at UOG in 72, my wife and I participated on that not-very friendly trek thru Bubulao. But It’s a beautiful place. And when we arrived at the cave area, I knew that The Japanese soldier had a good, safe haven. ALL calm, clean and an embracing forest. I would even set up a Summer Camp. He was very fortunate not to get shot by hunters. 🙏

I was stationed at Anderson in 65-66. I hung out on Jano ( probably mis-spelled). Some guamians there claimed to take stuff to a Japanese survivor near Marlboro cave. I went the a few times with or without them and never saw him but saw signs around. Heard about him giving up around early 70's.

I climbed down into Yokoi's cave 20 years after y'all left. Back then it was still as you described it. Cheers from Texas.

My grandparents survived the occupation of the Japanese and their names are inshrined on a huge brass plate with many others on top of Nimitz Hill. I want to thank the American military for their sacrifices during this era... There are none like them anymore. And thank you for an awesome documentary!

My family lived in Guam in 1970. I along with several others explored the caves where I believe the Japanese soldier was living. Little did we know that there was a Japanese soldier still living there.

It took almost a month to clear a island so tiny. And Saipan is EVEN SMALLER! And Saipan took longer too! The staggering Japanese casualties… god I wonder how many survived. We captured a few , but majority of them died. They still find bodies on guam! And they still find land mines and other explosives all over! They really put in all they had on that tiny place, and almost none of them made it out. Truthfully, I don’t feel to bad. They committed horrible massacres and had labour camps for the locals. They seem to do this in most places they occupy 🤔 Good video! - from a person who grew up on guam

My family and I lived for one year - 1970 on Guam. We lived in the community of Talafofo on the eastern side of Guam. I was 12 when we moved there. Our house was only a few hundred yards from the beach. I often found on the beach and in the jungle . 30 & .50 caliber shell casings and other war related stuff. One day I found what appeared to be part of a plane that was riddled with bullet holes. It didn't have any markings on it to identify it as American or Japanese. Behind our house on the reef were what I called 6-packs. There were 6 50 gallon drums lashed together and filled with concrete. There were two of these structures. We used them as swimming platforms. I also found several .50 caliber shell casings on and in the water around these structures. Plus there were several concrete pill boxes on the beach near our home. The Japanese soldier who was captured in 1972 was found near Talafofo bay, which was within walking distance of our home.

I was born and raised on Guam. The main road going north south on the upper half of the island is called Marine Drive. I always assumed it was because of the gorgeous ocean views, now I realize this road was paved in the blood of soilders as the American marines drove the Japanese north. Today the local economy is partially sustained by Japanese tourist. Great video except the proper pronounciation of these villages could use a more Spanish sounding bent. Thanks for the video.

One question. Were marines not using the camouflage helmet covers on Guam?
@redaug4212

Only the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade by the looks of it. Not sure why that is. I know the brigade's two regiments were primarily made up of former Marine Raiders, as well as replacements from the States that arrived just prior to the Guam invasion, so perhaps that had something to do with it. In any case, they were issued helmet covers when the brigade was reformed into the 6th Marine Division.
