I love how the EQ is still set in the classic "V" pattern that all of our high school audiophile senses thought was best.

The EQ (cheap aftermarket) that I had, to go along with my Pioneer stereo, was a 10 band. I recall that I had it set to basically a "M" pattern. I didn't care for a lot of bass or high treble. But then...I was listening to Country, when I wasn't listening to Rock. And '70s-'80s Country didn't have much bass.😁

Haha not that my ears are shot ,but the highs are hard to hear so the treble is cranked. Kinda same with the bass so I can feel it. Leave the mids low 😂

Hello Don MacLean. Love your song (Bye Bye Miss American Pie) and wonder if YOU maybe drove this very Supra off the boat in Boston back in '80? It is an '81 but maybe? My kidding aside (Miss American Pie) THANKS for watching and writing. Guys like you should share your experiences in the "behind the scenes" of the car industry. Everyone talks about the designers, stylists, race drivers but I'm fascinated by stories from assembly line workers and shipping personnel as well! Maybe a BLOG from you on your days "on the docks"? Thanks again, Steve Magnante

AMC did the same thing when they got their hands on the Jeep CJ in 1972. They wanted to use their own straight 6 engine and abandon the Buick V6 that was used through 1971, so they added 5 inches between the fire wall and front wheel opening and increased the wheel base. That is why the front fenders and hood... although they look identical...will not interchange between pre and post 1971 CJ's.

I learned how to drive standard shift on the generation after this (1982 to to 1986, 1986-1/2 was the next generation), or the "MA67" series. Those cars were easy to drive and learning stick was a breeze on one. These were assembled in the Aichi plant, which still operates under Toyota today. The 10th digit of the VIN is a "B" for the 1981 model year. The 1981 would have a 2.8L "5M-E" engine with fuel injection and the five speed was an Aisin-Warner W50. 1982 would have a 2.8L, but it was a "5M-GE". The five-speed manual was a W58 Aisin-Warner unit. The Toyota "M" engines, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run and run some more They are excellent engines, well-built and reliable. They are like Oldsmobile 307 V8 reliable. That's another engine that runs, runs, runs, runs, runs and runs some more. No, that's not correct---the Toyota Sunchaser was an authorized conversion done by Griffith Griffin. It wasn't done by Toyota (later ones were done by ASC for example), but it was authorized by Toyota, they just outsourced the work. No tag, can't brag, but possible code 888 Light Blue exterior paint. Toyota went from the "Oh What a Feeling!" motto later on to "Our Minds are Always Racing". With that, their sales have gone "racing" and have never stopped. GM should have kept partnering with them.

My dad was a Toyota dealer from 1968 to 1984. Admittedly, the Supra was a special Celica. But in my mind there was nothing really special about the Celica. As a teenager I was taken by the sleek Datsun 240Z. When I heard Toyota was releasing a "sports" car, I had great anticipation of a Toyota that would match the Z. That dream was quickly dashed when I first saw the Celica. My heart sank as I laid eyes on this dumpy little car with a back seat and 4-banger engine. Compared to the Z, it was laughable in my mind. But, it sold well, was reliable, and certainly was an upgrade from the Corollas and Coronas of the day. I drove 2 or 3 in the following years. They weren't bad cars, but nothing to write home about. I never drove a Supra or a Z so I have no knowledge to compare the two. Saw a well restored 240Z draw $33k at auction last week.

Hi Steve, the side panels were used to cover the edges of the hatch area that the retractable cover did not (not used as passenger sunshields). 1979 should be the first year of the Supra. Bot a '79 Supra new for about $9,500 (maybe $10K with tax and tags). All hubcaps eventually fell off. Later models were exclusively aluminum wheels. Super reliable, manual sunroof, electric windows, fuel injected in 1979, power everything. Midwest salt took its toll on the thin Japanese sheet metal. (Japanese car not looked upon favorably in the Midwest in the early 1980s).
@SteveMagnante

My Dad bought a brand new 1977 Datsun 810, precursor to the Maxima. Anyhoo, the hub caps were steel-based with a thin chrome "spritz" - this on Datsun's TOP car (not counting the Z). Well by 1979 the Massachusetts rust had nibbled at them and the hub caps had "mange". One of the rear caps used to fly off when I dumped the clutch! I was shocked to such crappy construction. I've driven an '82 and an '83 Supra, and the first time I drove one, I got maybe a half a mile down the street before I realized that this was a much better driving car than the 1982 Mustang GT that I had at the time. Purchased a '79 supra new for $9,500. Kept 8 years. Best car ever. Started every time (except at 4 below zero with older battery). Plenty of get up and go with ultrasmooth 5 speed. Came with hubcaps that eventually fell off of every wheel (replaced wheels with Shelby Talladega aftermarket). One year only side mirrors would deflect bugs into driver's face at speed...LOL. Plenty of room for front passengers, but rear seat was small at best. Awesome for carrying stuff, like college stuff back and forth. Midwestern salt eventually became insidious. Enjoy the car!

Ahh yes - the one item every 80’s guy thought would lead them straight to “The Promised Land” with the fairer sex - the stereo equalizer! Complete with flashing lights to dazzle her after she’s had one too many Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers…….😵‍💫 Those Gen 2 Supra’s were cool looking little cars - although the “80’s guy” in me would probably have opted for an RX-7 instead if forced to choose between Japanese sports cars of the day! Meanwhile, during that same time period I was “rolling” in a ‘75 Chevy Vega that was soon to be t-boned at the corner of 4th Avenue and Marshall Road……😖 Hey - who of us around here couldn’t use an extra five inches? Using this Toyota logic, GM was apparently at one time planning on putting an “Inline 16” into the Gen 2 Monte Carlo…….😂

@@googleusergp - Yes, it’s amazing how big car and home audio was back in that era! Laboriously deciding which brands and which combination of components! Now I’m not sure the kids even have that on their radar screen, as the speaker of choice seems to be the “ear pod”………😐

Surprised you didnt mention the rear end being gone. Supra solid axle is the ford nine inch of the Toyota world. Solid axle, disc brakes, 7.5" ring and pinion, what everyone grabs first from these cars at scrap yards

My personal opinion during that timeframe Japanese built automobiles were improving big time cam American automotive industry their cars and their trucks pretty much going down the toilet in construction and engine Manufacturing more plastic junk and horsepower ratings were bare minimum. But again the Toyotas big Improvement when they included the fuel injection to their engines almost like Mini superchargers.

I went to Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Better known as Claaahk in Woooostahhhh, there was a "semester abroad" program where the same tuition covered an optional semester in another country. I said "sign me up" and so spent the first half of my senior year at the University of Stirling in Scotland. That's the story1 Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante
