I agree... The second generation was High School for me, and is now on my Bucket List! I seem to remember a Dan Gurney commercial, filmed in San Francisco, with him ripping up the streets and the police, blocking intersections!! I've searched KZbin, but haven't been able to find it...😥

I started working part time for Avis in early 1985. By September, they had added over 150 Toyota Supra's to their fleet, just in Boston alone. When I saw the 7 car carriers with them in the Fleet parking lot, I thought they were lost. Nope. 70% of them had 5 speed manuals. Yep, in 1985 you could have rented a stick from Avis still, at least in Boston. Got to drive over 50 of those Supra's, because of course I knew how to drive a manual, and they ended storing them for a bit at the local dog race track, Wonderland. We stashed maybe 120 of them at the race track over a day or so. We never did that with any other cars during my 10 years there. Lots of fun shooting up Route 1A towards the race track. haha.

I want this car. Outside of the weakness forced upon the automobile industry in the 80's I love the cars of the decade. They have such a unique look to them just like the decade itself

01:35 that car (a 5-speed in white with those alloy wheels but with a blue vinyl interior and a hand-crank sunroof) is identical to the Celtics Supra my dad bought new from (Pittsburgh) Airport Toyota in October 1979. I learned to drive in that car, took my test in it, and by 1983 when I was a senior in high school I convinced my dad to sell it to me. I loved that car. Eventually it succumbed to the Pennsylvania rust monster. But a lot of great memories in and on it - I still miss her.

My mom bought a Supra brand new in 1985. Such a fun car to drive while I was in high school. My brother and I would do donuts in the Supra behind the local bowling alley near our house. My senior year in high school I raced a 1969 Dodge Charger and beat it in my mom’s ‘85 Supra.

I had five second gen Celica Supras they are one of the most amazingly bulletproof and reliable cars I've ever owned! My favorite one was my third, an '85 and it was the exact same color combo and options as Dan Gurney is driving in the commercial. I still remember the VIN number for that car 😊 Best car ever!

In 87 or 88, I raced a new Supra with my very worn out 65 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup. My old Chevy had a 350 V8 with a 3 speed manual. I was on Beach Blvd in Huntington Beach, CA. I was in the slow lane and some Asian guy was in the fast lane. We were at a red light and he was revving his Supra. I hit my gas a couple of times to let him know that “the race was on”. When the light turned green I stomped my foot to the floor as hard as I could, as did he. My rear tires began to lay the rubber down. We were running together. When we hit about 45mph, I up shifted into 2nd gear and my rear tires broke traction again. Out of my peripheral visionI could see him going through his gears. We were running neck and neck. When we hit 70mph, I shifted into 3rd gear and my rear tires “chirped” and that’s when I quickly pulled in front of him. The next light was red so we had to stop. I had dual exhaust and blue smoke bellowed out of both tail pipes. The young Asian guy wouldn’t even look at me in the eye. I did notice that he glanced over at me and when he did, I patted the old metal dashboard. There was so much blue smoke coming out from my tailpipes that he rolled up his windows. When the light turned green, he drove away in shame 😂. I pulled into the next gas station to add oil. At that time my pickup had 340K miles. Every 200 - 300 miles I had to add a quart of “Honey” oil, because like I said, it was flat out wore out. That Supra didn’t even have license plates yet, as it was brand new and a turbo to boot (at least it had a turbo badge on the rear). I finally sold it with 343K miles & bought an 82 Ford Escort to get me through college. I must admit that I was shocked that that wore out Chevy beat the Supra. I’m quite sure he too was shocked and humiliated. Boo hoo for him LMAO for Me 🤣🤣🤣
@digitalfootballer9032
@digitalfootballer9032 11 ай бұрын
You probably shouldn't have beat him, his machine was likely faster, you beat him on technique, probably better shifts. You mentioned you had an Escort, I did too, mine was a '91, it had an 88hp 4-cylinder with a 5-speex manual. It wasn't fast, but I could always squeeze a little extra out of it because for whatever reason it had the most comfortable clutch and shifter that I had the timing down to a science on. Beat several superior vehicles in my time with the old 'scort just because I knew that car so well I could drive it like it was an extension of my body. Same was probably true for you and your old Chevy pickup. Fun times.

In 1992 I bought my first car-an '83 Supra. Red with black interior. Much like the one you show at five minutes, but with a black interior. Fender flares, the cool Italian style door handles, the hand pump to fill up air pockets in the seat-it was the best first car I could've had. Quick, comfy, lsd, rear wheel drive, smooth straight six, handled perfectly, but not so fast I'd get in big trouble. I have too many cars as is, but i'd love to have one again.

Purchased in summer of 1996 and I still have my 85 mk2. Single turbo 2jz w/ all the bullshit upgrades. 5mgte blew up and couldn't find another. Took it to a speed shop and they upgraded everything. Odd thing. Purchased at the lemon lot on AFB. Didn't really knew what I had bought. Just needed a car. Paid like $2500 for it. Felt like it was a money pit at 17. Constantly, had to put it in the shop and work dead end jobs to keep it running. Almost traded it for mustang three years later. Last minute gut of regret hit me. Changed my mind. Now it's my spoiled garage queen.

I liked the first generation due to the six cylinder engine. But the SECOND GENERATION Supra is probably the third or fourth or best looking car ever built in my estimation. The Countach was first, the Ferrari 308 second, and either this car or the 928 were the next two. I drove a 928 for 19 years, and to this day I have a personal debate as to whether the Mk2 Supra P-type or the 928 was the better looking car. The 928 has the shapes and is far faster, but the flared fender Supra with the cut lines is outstanding! The third generation Supra was basically a Japanese Jaguar XJS. Medium fast but mellow, something you take on a long trip. It was more luxury than fast and it was heavy. The fourth generation Supra I never liked. The silly wing at the back was obnoxious and the dashboard looked cheesy. And stock they were high 13 second cars; Nothing to laugh at but nothing compared to today's cars. My '85 Porsche 928S2 ran a high 13 second quarter mile due to the five speed and the unregulated engine. The Supra would have been easy to tune WAY faster, but it didn't at all have the looks or "presence" of my 928. And since my 928 had a V8 engine, it sounded WAY better! The fifth generation BMW Supra? What a joke. I currently drive a '14 Cayman S and wound up at a Cars & Coffee in Fort Lauderdale parked next to one of these and the Supra simply looks stupid with all the fake vents and weird front end. My cockpit is airy, the BMW cockpit is pinched down. And they realistically aren't any faster. My mid-engine design will handle way better on the track to boot. And get this: What do you get when you buy a 5th generation Supra: You get BMW's horrid reliability record combined with Toyota's pig-like design language. Hello? They really need to bring back the '82 Supra P-type and just be done with it-

My dad had purchased a brand new 1984 Celica Supra, beautiful car inside and out, but here is the #1 reason why you shouldn't purchase one today...PARTS ! They are close to impossible to find spare/replacement parts for that car today, 95% plus have been depleted from the Toyota supply system and very little if any on the used parts market. Parts scarcity was the main reason I sold my 1989 Supra Mk III, 1JZ turbo, I loved that car and boy was it fast, but parts; forget it.

Great video, thanks for putting this all together! I was crazy about the Supras. Some guy at work bought a new 84 burgandy sport version and I knew I had to get one ... but used because $16K was a lot of dough. My first was a used 83, red with black leather and it was cool but I liked the 84 upgrades and found a mint, lady owned black 84 with only 42K miles for $8,800! I kept that one for several years. All the Mk IIs that I had were the sport version with manuals except one exceptionally nice burgandy with gray leather 86 (not 86.5) which was an auto. I really dug the looks, the ride and the sporty feel... it was a great car considering all the duds of the 80s. The Toyota 4x4 pickups were my other habit but that's another story. I have a video on my Zone47 channel called 'Car Crazy' which showcases all my Celicas and Supras... check it out!

The Second generation Supra in terms of appearance looked alot like a Lotus Esprit, especially in white you could squint and imagine the Lotus from James Bond 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. When you opened the hood, things looked very BMW-like with the inline six cylinder, but slower. I think 0-60 was 8 seconds which was good for 1986. Passing on a two lane highway took guts and accelerating from 40 to 80 mph, you quickly realized you were NOT in a BMW though everything felt solid and well put together. Actually, the Datsun 280z was noticeably quicker with the same size motor. I think the Supra was heavier and that slowed it down. 280z made 170hp. Supra made 160hp but the weight made it feel slower.

Ever since the '71 Celica first appeared, I loved it! Then a Supra came along, basically a custom Celica, awesome. 2nd gen is my favorite and big part of the reason is that uniquely cool front end design unlike what any manufacturer had done!(prove me wrong) Last few years of this one are coolest!! 3rd gen I worked at a Toyota dealership('88-'90) as a lot attendant. New car Manager drove a white demo model with a red velour interior, BEAUTIFUL! BUT, he had a dog so almost every day I had to vacuum out the car. Good part is, I got to drive it!! 4th Gen, absolutely a great design that still excites today or is that just me, lol. Fast and Furious added to the appreciation of these cars now knowing Paul Walker loved 'em too! How could you not LOVE the 5th gen?!! Actually, in the beginning I thought the design was over the top like the concept car I believe Lexus had. Jada Toys which I collect made a die cast of the concept and i was never inspired to buy it, until now. I do have Hans Supra from F9. A Toyota combined with the "Ultimate Driving Machine", what could be better? 👊😎✌🇨🇦

Early 1982 cars' badges on the nose and pillar only say Supra, not Celica Supra. My 1982 Terra Cotta 5-speed has them, produced 10/81. It feels so much faster than it is, so fun to drive. The way it squats and revs up, shifting a couple gears then looking down and seeing I am only going 45 😂 The driving experience is so much different from my '01 IS300.

I was lucky enough to drive every generation of the Supra (although the M1 only once or twice) while working at a Toyota dealership. The MK2 was my favorite. The 1985 car was just an absolute beauty. 9:14 - In 2019 at the Detroit Autos Show, Toyota revealed its FIRST Generation BMW Supra with an 8 speed automatic ZF gearbox only. While having nothing in common with the previous generation's inline 6-cylinder, other than the number of cylinders and overhead cams, this drivetrain and power plant can be found in the BMW Z4 with better tuning. In 2022, Toyota finally conceded to having a 6 speed manual transmission in the GR Supra. Huzzah. There! I fixed it for you.

I had a 1980 1st gen and a 1986 1/2 3rd gen. I loved them both. The 3rd gen seemed to lean more towards a semi luxury coupe than a sport coupe. I simply loved the 3.0 engine. It was silky smooth. It wasn’t a screamer by any means. But it had good power for its day. I wish that idiot hadn’t turned into me and totaled it out. I had 180,000 miles when he hit me. I’d buy another one just for old times sake. Great car.

Sadly, that was fairly quick in its time. The malaise era was still lingering about until the late 80's. I still remember how slow my old '85 Civic was. Sure it was never meant to be fast but I think my 2018 Cub Cadet garden tractor would beat that old Civic 😂

If you wanted a FAST gen III Supra, you needed to do a 1JZ single turbo engine swap, they will haul ass with the big boys, plus NO turbo lag like the 7M turbos, I know, I use to have a 1989.

Here a fun fact. Every Toyota name means Crown, some directly, some by inference. Supra is Latin, and means above or over, like a Crown.

We have 45 release our case two of them being the first generation supeeras. One of them being a GT. Then the other one will be I guess the third generation. But it's an oddball. If not Supra all over the body styled like one. It's the near supra. It has the body style of the Supra and I believe it's four inches shorter than the Supra. But the engine is not the base engine. People sure like these cars.

Even though they aren't fast, I've always thought the Mk-1 Celica Supras were the best looking inside and out. Im a little partial though, I've owned a Blue exterior Blue vinyl interior 5 speed 1979 model since 1996. She currently is sitting covered with just under 100k original miles. The newest version of the Supra is just a BMW wearing a different dress.👎

Always was a big fan of the styling of the 1st and second gen Celicas and Celica-Supras. I think the modern vehicle that is the closest tribute to those old Toyotas is the 86. Not a fan of the rebadged BMW Supra either.

I agree with you! Since the early 90's, I've owned two MK-1 1981 5-speeds with classic body curves that are timeless. For one of them I have Mk-2 Recaro seats to bolt on, the wider rims and the wide hatch wing for the rear to make it look more muscular. Mk-1s are the closest overall to the classic 60's 2000GT! The new 'Zupra" based on the Z4 BMW I saw as a possibility before, due to some resemblance in body styles.

I will be honest. In the 90s and 00s, I didn’t like them. The 4th gen was the only one I liked, but I like these now. I guess for me, they went from an “old car” to “classic,” and that’s their appeal. I mean, when you think about it, what late 70s to early 90s cars are sought after classics?

Please don’t call the current “BMW Supra” abomination. The Supra mark 4 was the pinnacle

How about we revere what the Toyota supra is, and was, and not start the video off with a BMW drivetrain wrap with the Toyota body. That is not a Toyota supra! Everybody knows that, it’s not part of the Toyota family!

Not one of my favorite car. I don't care for foreign cars. In my opinion. They are what ruined the American auto market.
