Loved that thank you Mike. From 1977 I went to school and later to work about CEPs and VEPs. I remember getting so excited at the CEP refurb. Hated the VEPs with a passion though, and pretty shocked to see them in your pics of Boat Trains. What were they thinking to put them on Boat Trains?!!! Horrible drafty uncomfortable things ;@)

Very interesting Mike had no idea you used to drive them ! Sadly my only experience of riding southern EMU's was on the suburban 4SUB units when I was young and used to go to Clapham Junction and Waterloo train spotting. Hope your videos generate renewed interest in the Southern's old EMU's I have an old Bradford Barton book with some great photo's of the different breeds back then, as ever a well constructed and filmed video, Stewart

Mike - some wonderful recollections accompanying the videos - well done! 👍 Occasionally a ‘spare’ Kent boat train 12-car CEP formation was used on the Newhaven boat; its MLV remaining attached to save detaching /reattaching. Except upon arrival the MLV was occasionally detached to provide a driver’s ‘taxi’ service across to Seaford before reattachment and return to London! ⚡ One snowy winter’s day can recall most of the staff in Southern House dashing over to the windows to witness a 4 SUB on a headcode ‘4’ to Brighton. It returned later that day having lost its oil tail lamp at speed after leaving Brighton. - Colin 🙂

Thanks Colin, love the 4SUB story. I was just starting my railway career in 1981/2 and used to travel from Havant to Portsmouth & Southsea daily. Lots of snow then and the 04:30 was often a 4 or 8 SUB, it would make a late morning return from Southsea. By the time I was driving at Fratton SUBs had gone but my next favourite was the 4EPB. Madly heavy snow in 1990 and a 4EPB turned up on my Brighton train, it was wonderful doing all stops to Brighton and back, when we got back an hour late I handed over the train and went for a break. The EPB due to run ecs to WD. The snow fell and services were cancelled. TCS said to me and my guard, no unit for your next bit to Brighton and back again, poor sods haven't had a train for five hours. I looked to my guard then to the EPB sitting in the reception road doing nothing. How about her I said. TCS said well we can't get it back to WD now so if you want to yes. Yay, made it to Brighton absolutely rammed with greatful punters, bit slow on the return due other failures. Got stuck at Goring for two hours. But then cruised triumphant back to Fratton to be told WD had sent a driver down to get it five hours back lol

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Wonderful and thank you for sharing! 👍 The Marys were the last build of SR emus to have a power jumper between units so you only needed one shoe on an 8-car to make contact! 🙂 Used to be a peak-hour service to London Bridge from Eastbourne that was booked to include one of the express-gear ratio 4 EPB units (usually with two 4 CEP units). 😮 These 90 mph 4 EPB units utilised motor bogies recovered when the 2H/3H units were downgraded to 75 mph and always felt quite exhilarating to ride in (even though there was the 90mph 2 HAP units). ⚡ One can be seen (5338) in the 2 BIL history behind 2100 departing Eastbourne in 1961. 😎

Great collection of EMUs with a thoughtful and informative commentary. The appearance of the layout would be improved by fitting 3rd rails and protection boards that are available as etched parts. I expect you have already thought of that, but have never got around to it! Thanks for uploading.

I've watched the DMUs in the Snow video, and listened to the sound the DMUs make. The sound of an EMU is slightly louder, perhaps similar to the growl of a Class 37 diesel. I'm now wondering if I'll find something like Steam Engines in the Snow. I'll check it out.

Modelling challenge for you. MK1 TLV. On the off chance you are unfamiliar with it its basically a mk1 BG fitted with jumpers to work with a MLV in a train. Would look great between the CEP and MLV and very very rarely modelled.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say, sorry. CEP stands for Corridor Electro-Pneumatic Brake, trust me I used to drive the real thing. Here's some more information for you that may clear up any misunderstanding. The British Rail Class 411 (4CEP) electric multiple units were built at Eastleigh works from 1956-63 for the newly electrified main lines in Kent. These units, which used a British Railways Mark 1 bodyshell, were based on the earlier Southern Railway 4 COR design, built in 1937. Variants of the class 411 design included the class 410 and class 412 4 BEP units, which contained a buffet car in place of a standard trailer. They were later used on services in Sussex and Hampshire; following the privatisation of British Rail in 1995, the units were used by the Connex South Central, Connex South Eastern and South West Trains franchises. They were replaced by Juniper, Desiro, and Electrostar units. The fleet's lifespan was 49 years. These units are the longest-lived BR Mark 1 EMUs

The double decker EMUs by Oliver Bullied were an interesting one. They were withdrawn by 1977 KR Models are meant to be making a model of these. I don't have any DMUs or EMUs on my layout a bit stand alone for me I prefere a multi purposes model. Were the EMUs unreliable hence the diesels at the back seen this in old photos?
@ModelRailwaysUnlimited

Hi, yes the DD was interesting. No the EMUs were very reliable apart from when there was heavy snow. Then locos would be attached so they could keep going

@ModelRailwaysUnlimited The Class 501's worked on the Watford DC line to Broad Street and Euston and to Richmond. Similar to the EPB but slightly shorter. I believe they were occasionally used on the Kent lines, I saw a cab ride video recently. 👍🏻

I think the 4CEP is one of the best models bachmann ever made. Certainly sounds great going around the track. What a bloody shame they want so much for the 4BEP. Price up a full 4CEP-4BEP-4CEP-MLV-MLV boat train! Im looking forward to riding the 5BEL when its completed. I don't know when that would be, originally it was to be ready to transfer VIP's for the 2012 Olympics...

Hi, is that for the thumb nails? KZbin advisor put me onto the current yellow on blue. Is it not effective?
@207rb
@207rb Жыл бұрын
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited yes the thumbnail text. it is effective I think it is too bright so it is taking attention away from the photo itself. Most well produced channels I watch have outlined text usually in black that is more subtle (doesn't take up as much area). Blue on yellow is quite garish, blue and yellow is br colours from 70s though so could be justified.

I always thought an Electric Multiple Unit had the same sound as a Diesel Multiple Unit. Correct me if I'm wrong. I know the cab ends of the EMU and DMU are different, yet I found it hard to distinguish the sound of the EMU from the sound of a DMU. If you have any DMUs in your collection, could you run one alongside an EMU with sounds of the real thing for comparison? I'm still intrigued.

Hello. The Brighton Belle formation you are running is incorrect. The first class kitchen cars should have the kitchen area outward to each other. That is to say the dining areas face each other. It should also be noted that this was critical as these units had to formed in a particular way: motor coach-trailer-kitchen-kitchen-motor. It did not matter which first class coach was next to the motor coach as long as it was the correct way round. So, the kitchen should be next to the motor at one end and the other kitchen next to the trailer or parlour car. As a point of interest the same applied to the 6-pul and 6-pan units. These also had to be formed in a specific way.
