I use the cardboard toilet roll inserts to get an early start indoors before planting the whole thing. I also cut them in half and find they are perfect for almost any seed germination 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🥕

I feel for you with the trees - I am surrounded by sycamores that self seed everywhere and if you miss one it can grow into a fairly substantial tree that is a ballache to dig out. One is still my arch nemesis as I can't get the whole root out so it just keeps coming back, and I just attack the new branches with the secateurs before calling it a bastard.

Who needs a gym when they have an allotment plot 😂😂😂 You have done a great job putting all that effort into whipping the second plot into great shape 👏👏👏, all that effort will put you in good stead going forwards. Oooo and i love surprises so can't wait for the next stage 👍👍👍

I love a marathon video and how nice for you to be able to really dedicate a while day to the 2nd plot. Massive pat on the back, it really looks great. Carrots in egg boxes eh? Well to be honest it is worth a try and I will have to give that a go. I cleared my little pallet collar of shallots last weekend and repositioned it, refilled with some of the Sylvagrow with John Innes compost, such a nice fine texture perfect for carrots and I was going to sew again in rows. But do you know, I might just have a go at this (need to find a large egg box from somewhere first). There was a KZbinr called Malcolm Kingswell from South Wales (sadly he decided to not do anymore vlogs) He always germinates his parsnips every year in toilet roll tubes and his idea was he would sow two seeds per tube then snip off the weaker seed once germinated. Once the true leaves came through he then planted the whole thing out. No disturbance to the roots and only planting out germinated seeds. I have tried that this year in conjunction with pre-germinating the seed on wet kitchen paper (as Jessie - Plot37 does). Well I did six loo rolls and planted six germinated seedlings. I have three now as unfortunately the slugs hoovered off a couple but the others are looking fab. We are not big eaters of parsnips but I have always wanted to try growing them for Christmas dinner. So sometimes the wacky and simple ideas can work and you never know, this could be the way to sow carrots successfully from now on. I am certainly giving it a go, so thanks for sharing and to your subscriber. I have also seen pelleted seed work for a few gardeners who have issues, but it is more expensive.

Egg carton aint that daft. I use cardboard tubes from the loo rolls for a lot of things. I'll give the carrots a go and let you know the results.

Wonderful job JB 👏👏. Plot 2 is looking good. When I took my plot on 18 months ago I had to remove a tree from the centre of the plot. I used a pick axe and spade. It was hard work but I got all the roots out - the tree was around 12-14ft high. Your celeriac looks very healthy, mine too but I keep it under fleece at this time. In fact, I get good seed germination rates by always starting seeds off under a fleece cloche. Looking forward to seeing the progress over the coming weeks/months. Thank you for your update. Paul

JB you should watch Jessie @plot 37 last video. She has a great potting station by her shed built from pallets which I am going to copy and build come the Autumn. You’re always kneeling on the floor potting on just like me! Watch it you’ll know what I mean when you see it. Somewhere to store alll your pots securely too keeping your greenhouse clear😊

It's not a bad idea the egg carton method. If you can, do a couple and pop them around different beds and see how they go. Your corn is probably stunted because of those roots sucking the moisture. Your corn is not rubbish, just give it more water as you go. I mean look at the stalk, it's thick and strong. That's a great indicator that they will be fine. Not all corn grows tall. Your plots look good. Winning! :)

I find that laying a wooden board over the carrot seeds until they germinate works well, it keeps the soil moist. Good luck with the carrots now!!

Your plots are looking so different now ..looking so good ...first time I tried the egg cartons it was a tray like yours with onions .I bought the big trays second hand .when your ready don't cut the carton up ...just put the whole tray onto a watered bed ...it will break down .p.s I germinate mine at home so I can make sure they don't dry out

Last year I started carrots on damp tissue in plastic tub, keeping them damp until they germinated ( couple of days) then gently picked up by little leaves and planted out, it worked, sorry lot of work, and harvested later.

Oooh! Way to go! Looking good! I bet it feels good to be done with all that tidying up 😄And lets hope that some plot close by is growing corn too without any "deterrent" hehe. And fun little experiment with the carrots. Can't wait to see how it goes 👍

I’d be inclined to put the box lid on those carrots to keep the moisture in till they germinate. And sit the hole lot in a tray of shallow water. Good luck. 🥕🥕🥕

It might work it might not. A couple of years ago a squirrel was taking my sweetcorn, netting was a waste of time but putting socks over the cobs just before they ripened solved the problem. It might by you a bit of time.

Awesome to see all that cleanup! I'm curious as to why so many gardeners in Britain seem to have issues growing carrots. Is it the climate, or something else?

I have a theory - the last few years our climate has gradually changed and here in the South East of England (where I am too) we are having drier Springs and this is not good germinating weather for carrots. I think folks on the west side of the country are getting wetter springs so any vloggers that side don't have our issues as much.🙂
