Secondary Assessment for EMTs

Secondary Assessment is the forth step of your overall EMT Patient Assessment. Secondary Assessment is where you perform a detailed physical exam of the patient.
During this assessment, we are looking for ant injuries or conditions that have been overlooked by our previous rapid physical exam in the primary assessment.
The key to remember is that the primary assessment is looking for life threats and the secondary assessment is more detailed once we've handled the life threats initially. Of course, if the patient is quite stable the secondary assessment will come into play much faster in your patient assessment.

Also want to add the acronym NSAIDS can help with your spinal exam. N- Neuro (deficits during exam) S- Significant MOI (high velocity impacts such as high falls, rapid decelaration, ejection from motor vehicle) also consider age A- Alertness (changes in mental status) I- Intoxication (drugs or alcohol) D- Distracting injuries (non-lifethreatening injuries that distract you from spinal exam) S- Spinal Exam (point tenderness on palpation of the spine) This is an acronym we use at Wake County to determine the use of spinal motion restriction

Good tip for anyone remember this DCAP BLS TIC RED Deformities contusion abrasions punctures burns lacerations swelling Tenderness instability crepitus. A good tip use red for abdomen it helps a lot red means Rigidity eviseration distension. This helped me remember it a lot more. Good luck!

I want to say thanks. I used your videos along with Limmer to prep for the EMTNR. I passed first time in September. I'm now a working EMT. Your stuff is spot on and I recommend your channel to other students we mentor. In my situation, there is little time between pickup and getting to the hospital, so the field decision is what do we need to assess on-scene and what can be done in the van on the way to the ER.
