That's kind of true. You are forced to improve your chess skills to prevent more head trauma, so that's a good motivator right there.

@bonniejunk
@bonniejunk 5 жыл бұрын
@@keepermovin5906 I watch chess matches and boxing matches, and have an interest in both. This is really, really, lame as a spectator sport when you're used to watching elite athletes. By adding separate win conditions and physical fighting, you make the chess a lot more boring to watch. And the lazy narration that basically says "Okay, they're playing the flattest, most stable defences because they don't want to get checkmated before they fight" makes the chess even harder to follow. It's just amateur boxing with chess thrown in between rounds. I doubt there's very many chess boxers that would fare well in either a professional boxing match or a chess match against an IM or GM.

@I Miss The Old Days Damn the strategy that must go into this at high levels has gotta be crazy since trying too hard during the boxing rounds will leave you gassed out, which would make it much harder to think when you´re doing the chess part, but hurting your opponent will make him have a much harder time thinking about the chess match as well, or you can try to play it safe, stay on the defensive and tire the other guy out during the boxing to make his chess weaker if you´re worried he´s gonna out-think you, or you can do it when you feel you´ve got a good thing going on in the chess match and you wanna preserve your cognitive abilities as best you can. Man, there´s levels to this shit.

@MrRazmut 5 жыл бұрын
@@JourneyToTheCage It´s a lot mental, but 90%? Dude are you serious? You do realize that would mean speed, power, precision, cardio, and ability to take shots would be only 10% of the game? Get the fuck out of here dude, there´s a lot of strategy in boxing and it requires mental toughness but you still have to actually be physically able to hit the other guy, and do it hard enough that it hurts. Boxing is only 90% mental when both contestants are evenly skilled and in good shape. That´s when it becomes a game of elaborate setups and pushing through adversity.
@29slowjoe
@29slowjoe 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrRazmut Boxing takes 100 percent of both. That's the easiest way to say it.
@MrRazmut
@MrRazmut 5 жыл бұрын
@@29slowjoe Well of course it does. Your head has to be in the game just like every other sport, it´s just harder to do that than most other sports because messing up has dire consequences, you get hurt. That has nothing to do with the claim that boxing is 90% mental though. That would mean that you would have a reasonable chance of winning against someone massively fitter and more skilled than you just because you have a better mentality, and that´s just not true. No guy who is green at boxing will land a solid punch on a Holyfield or a Pacquiao or a Golovkin, no matter how strong and clever they are mentally. Physical part of the game is your ability to do what you need to do, the mental side is your ability to maintain that ability under pressure and push through adversity. If your skills and fitness are not up to par having a strong mind doesn´t do anything, it just makes you stay in there longer getting beat up. Example: Floyd vs Gatti

They need to do a top down view of the chessboard. Feels like every time someone shows two people playing chess you never see the board properly. Also, hit your opponent in the head! Then they won't be able to concentrate on the chess.
@rawnukles
@rawnukles 10 жыл бұрын
I noticed the commentator kept talking about body blows. You would think they would go for the head to try to stun each other and ruin their opponents concentration. Maybe they are reluctant to give each other brain damage... in an unsaid gentleman's agreement sort of way?
@mo0od749
@mo0od749 10 жыл бұрын
rawnukles The results of body damage is more instant. Making somebody feel pain is a much quicker and easier way to distort their mind. Rather than hitting someone in the head. Which is quite painful for the hand and it doesn't do much with concentration. Although a combination of the two of them is what will win you the game as you see here in this match.
@davidcampos2615
@davidcampos2615 5 жыл бұрын
@@mo0od749 Ik this is old but its very untrue. Body blows hurt (especially liver shots) but they are more suited to slowing them down in the long run and depleting their stamina. A headshot would result in higher likeliness of a knockdown especially with contact to the jaw or temple. Body shots are great for pressure and are useful in any boxers toolkit but idk how effective they are when the opponent has 12 minutes to recover from their gradual damahe
@Edited6
@Edited6 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidcampos2615 "when the opponent has 12 minutes to recover from their gradual damahe" It alternates between 4 minute rounds of chess and 3 minute rounds of boxing, with 60 seconds between each. That has to be a mind-fuck to switch gears like that, I don't think they really get a chance to recover from much of anything.
@davidcampos2615
@davidcampos2615 5 жыл бұрын
@@Edited6 Sorry for the misspellings and whatnot but 3 minutes is huggeee break. Consider a normal boxer fights for 3 minutes against elite talent and rest for about 1 minute and go back again for 12 rounds. These dude get 4 minutes inbetween letting them rest wayyyy more. If you were on the ropes in R2, you can completely catch your breath by R3. I do boxing myself and I've seen many others do it so I know what I'm saying (only the boxing stuff chess i dont know very well. I have a moderate amount of knowledge in chess.)

My son is involved quite heavily in chess boxing and has not lost one of his seven matches. His last fight ended in a brilliant knock out. Yes the sport is very serious and entertaining. Better you understand at least the rudiments of chess to gain a full appreciation. To answer, at least partially, the question at what level of chess player are the contenders; you could equally ask at what level of boxer are the contenders? But Carl has a FIDE rating ELO of around 2300 (ELO is how chess is measured nationally and internationally) He is a rated FIDE Master and is now working towards IM (International Master) . The boxing has to be learned also, although this can be more painful. Boxing is a class skill. Though you get a shorter apprenticeship than learning chess. Basically it is the use of both brain and brawn and the efficiency of the divergent levels of concentration necessary to each sport. In other words : To get anywhere you need to be good at both. The organisers are unlikely to match contenders who are seriously outclassed before the game begins. Paying Customers don't like that !

Well, yes, this is a good point; I think there are arguments both ways, with it really coming down to how you define a sport. If you say a sport is something like "a competitive activity involving skill and a significant degree of physical exertion" (which is reasonable, I would say), then chess clearly isn't a sport as it falls down on the physical exertion part. On the other hand, other relatively sedentary things like darts and snooker are definitely classed as sports, calling into question the validity of the above definition, and hence of the status of chess. Plenty of room for debate here I think :)
@Phrolox
@Phrolox 8 жыл бұрын
I think you need to define physical exertion because it's been shown the physical toll on your body is just as high as any sport where u physically move. Heart rates of the professionals have been recorded as high as 170 beats per minute during key moments in chess games. Part of the reason Chess is recognised by the Olympic committee as a sport.
