It doesn't. It only makes sense if you don't know how to make decisions. Get the shot in camera especially if you have enough pixels to throw away. Guess what? If you have a 12mp or 10mp camera, that's plenty of pixels to 2x or even 4x crop in camera via DX mode. If you're unaware many sports photographers used DX mode during the Olympics when it was introduced on the D3 and guess what, they still made high quality prints for magazines, trading cards, online, broadcast, bill boards, and posters using 6mp, 5mp, or even 2.5mp files. What modern day photographers lack is INTENTION. Know what you want, and shoot it. Don't wait for photoshop or LR.

Most of you missing the point. It's not just about the usable pixels/ resolution. It's more about how you compose your subject, cause you're very limited in post to modify the composition. Sure, it doesn't entirely replicate the FOV and DOF of a dedicated lens, but it's still useful and is easier to replicate in post. It's just like editing a clip to be black and white vs shooting directly in mono where you'll be able to readily see how a scene is composed. Again, you can replicate in post, but limited if at all possible.

I have little issue visualizing what a cropped or b/w photo would look like while looking at the uncropped or color version. I guess this might help to push you if you're struggling with creativity or visualization skills in the moment. If this is really what it's about, I guess camera manufacturers should add these modes as visualizers for the viewfinder and just save the unedited version on the card, like shooting raw.

I’d only recommend doing this if you’re using a lens meant for a crop sensor via an adapter. I believe that’s what the option is there for. You’ll see your composition without the vignetting and I believe it’ll save those photos as jpeg while keeping the full sensor file. The only downside is knowing half your megapixels. But this is a great option for those vintage lens owners that pair it with a much higher megapixel camera. Either way it doesn’t hurt to play with it. And seeing most people take photos for the joy of it and or for social media, you’re not really going to lose much detail seeing social media tends to get a bit crazy with compression. So do whatever works for you!

and APS-C mode is automatically used when the FF camera detects APS-C lenses. Which is also a bad thing, especially regarding to the Sigma 18-35. Its a APS-H lens but recognized as APS-C so you cant even force modern cameras to use more of the imaging circle. APS-H is nearly as big as FF and most APS-H lenses have a big enough imaging circle to more or less fill the FF sensor.
@Seanvandeusen
@Seanvandeusen 6 ай бұрын
@@harrison00xXx Not all cameras will detect the lens meant for a crop sensor. Only lenses registered with said camera prior to a firmware update will recognize you're using a crop lens. if you're using third party lenses, an adapter, dummy adapter and or a lens not registered for said camera.. the camera may not crop automatically. At least on older and more recent Sony, Canon, Lumx, Fuji and Nikon cameras i've used and or own. As far as sensor sizes go, The APS-H is still a bit smaller than full frame. I think what your explaining comes down to the camera and space between the lens and the sensor. Some lenses are forgiven while others are built 100% specifically for said sensor. As we know many full frame lenses are often converted to crop. Sigma is infamous for doing that.

@@alexnather7614no it's not. A crop sensor captures said image with the entire sensor. What this does, is use only a center portion of the censor to mimic the crop. Effectively reducing the resolution of the final image recorded on the card. This option is a gimmick for still pictures. It's identical to cropping the image in post. But if it is applied to video, it doesn't lower resolution, and does effectively optically zoom the image. This is because video files are much smaller than still images. Most manufacturers use a skip pixels method, where the entire sensor size is used, but pixels are ignored in-between working pixels. This provides the lower resolution & aspect ratio of video. Some dudes that put out a software hack for old canon bodies called Magic Lantern, figured this out. They had a setting so the censor didn't skip pixels. Instead using a concentration in the middle (crop) which produced a "zoomed" in image like a crop sensor using a full frame lens.

If you’re shooting raw photos, it’s the same as cropping digitally later. But when you shoot in that mode, you’re unable to zoom out later. It’s good for video work. Since Sony down samples 6K to 4K in full frame mode but records at 4K in 1.6 times crop mode. So no matter what you’re still getting a 4K image, but since you’re losing megapixels in photo mode, there’s really no reason to do it other than using an APC lens and not wanting the heavy vignette
@matthewandclank2

@bradnotbrad
@bradnotbrad 6 ай бұрын
Actually the answer is a little more complicated than that. I remember demonstrating this once for a photo class of mine. Everyone loves the 50mm 1.8 because it’s a cheap lens that gives lots of background blur. Most students were using canon T5 cameras with a 1.53 crop, which if you calculate for full frame gets you to around 76.5mm with an 2.73/f. This isn’t exact but at this point I demonstrated that a canon T5 camera at 50mm 1.8 had a similar look to a 75mm 2.8 on my full frame. The math is close enough. So if it’s a 24 1.4 in the video it would look about the same as a 38mm at 2.2/f TLDR get a 35 1.8 if you really love the 35mm look

omg I can't believe that so many people in the comments still believe that lens compression is real 😂 It's not. It's a lie. Having a tele lens is just zooming in without loosing resolution. The "lens compression" comes purely from the distance to the subject. It has been showcased and proven by many people already.
@bradnotbrad
@bradnotbrad 6 ай бұрын
Because of the way that F stops are calculated on camera lenses I don’t think your statement is accurate. If you change the crop of the photo you are changing the usable size of the entrance pupil and therefore changing the F stop calculation of the lens. The “lens compression” happens due to the distance to the subject as long as the relative F stop is used. When compared 50mm 1.8 with a 1.53 crop and 75mm 2.8 with full frame, both images have the same characteristics in terms of “compression” and that’s what most people don’t understand. What you are saying is that zooming in without losing resolution is all a tele lens does is false since a tele lens also adjusts the aperture and entrance pupils size to supply the same amount of light into the lens which by definition adds in lens compression
@YVZSTUDIOS
@YVZSTUDIOS 6 ай бұрын
@@bradnotbrad I'm not talking about f stops. I'm talking about the depth compression aka your face won't be that distorted if you're not too close to your face. It's not the focal length that distorts yo face, it's the distance between camera to subject. I get what you mean that the f stop is changing when cropping and it totally makes. I've used a crop sensor before so I know that I'd need a much lower f stop lens on a crop sensor than a full frame to achieve the same amount of DoF/capture same amount of light. I'm just saying that most people will notice the difference in f-stop later or never, but when they learn that a lens does not distort a face, its the distance, that it will enlighten a lot of photographers.

Everyone saying about the reduction in resolution is right… but don’t forget that you can uncrop with the raw files so this trick really is just a composition helper if you want to shoot cropped.

When an amateur meets an amateur…it’s just cropping the sensor. Losing resolution, which is something you could easily do yourself, in post…but still have the option to bring back more. Storage is cheap. Some moments only happen once. Don’t capture it in lower, cropped resolution. Weak.

@@relent107 if you want to frame the shot in a certain way, it's easier to crop in camera, because you can actually see your composition on display instead of imagining it. Also, 12mp is still 4k resolution. You could enlarge it to the size of a 65 inch tv and it would still look crisp. If you want to print even bigger, which i doubt, bring a whole lens set and zoom in next time
@koobs4549
@koobs4549 Ай бұрын
@@SixDasher your statement proves the opposite point, you are correct that 38mm doesn’t distort. The problem is that he didn’t start with a 38mm lens, he was using a 24mm & no level of cropping is going to eliminate that distortion. It’s easier to use this technique when you start with a focal length that has little to no distortion & you can more easily play with the aperture to better match the look.

Why do you have to be so elitist about knowledge & where to find it. I have more respect for people who search for knowledge than those who claim to have all the answers. Stop shitting on this guy for wanting to learn a skill, it doesn’t matter how he learns it as long as he’s growing as an artist. Maybe stop acting so pretentious & offer some of all that knowledge you like to pretend to possess. 😂

I do this for video on my camera that has a 6k sensor and I shoot in 4k. Has an option to crop the sensor without losing any detail and expand your options. Now my 24-50 can also go up to what I assume to be around 70-ish for some tighter shots without having to swap lenses. One lens all day makes the job easier and my backpack lighter. Only downside is it seems to not be so great in low light when cropped, so I don’t use it at night.

Thanks for the tips 🙏 have you got any recommendations for a decent camera to get back into photography that's also great for videos? I bought a Nikon in 2017 so probably should upgrade 😂 although the peak design stuff is INCREDIBLE! I HIGHLY recommended their camera bag. It's the perfect bag and camera bag combined. It's even great for overnights away and everyday use. It's high quality and mine has taken a beating and still looks the same as the day I bought it, I got the grey one. Best investment EVER. 😂 And their capture cam clip is a MUST HAVE. It fit's perfectly on your belt or the bag strap and you can easily put your camera down safely attached to you in busy spaces where you need to quickly put it down safely and move. It can't be pulled off. Protesters attacked me and tried. It was THOROUGHLY tested. It's solid metal design is cool and reliable. I was dumb though and bought the only tripod without the standard square plate base to attach the camera so I had to get another tripod for it ☠️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤣 but it was WELL worth investing in and it's saved my camera being taken more than one. It also allowed to instantly put it down safely and securely and dodge explosives. Gotta LOVE all those peaceful protestors. ☠️🤡☠️🤦‍♀️🙅🤷‍♀️🤣 I'm a small woman in a wheelchair and taking pictures and they literally kidnapped because they swore I was a police SPY! 🤦‍♀️🤯🤷‍♀️🤣 HOW sway... HOW... Haha 🤣 and they seriously believed it. I was so stunned I didn't even know what to do but laugh hysterically 🤣 I was like and exactly HOW many police spies are in a bloody wheelchair?! ☠️🤦‍♀️🤯🤷‍♀️🤣 I want to get back into photographing local events. But also have a camera good enough to take pet and baby pictures with as a side hustle. So any recommendations would be greatly appreciated 🙏 and I hope you had a wonderful weekend 🙏
