I’d suggest using foam cut by a CNC router, but that’s what I’m used to. High density foam is unaffected by water, durable, and can be finished to look like stone. Additionally, the CNC option would allow sections/modularity for ease of installation-that is, you could carve out meter-by-meter squares that would become seamless once assembled.

As someone that operates a small 3d print farm, you should get your rock wall cnc cut from XPS foam; and get an artist like nerdforge to paint it, they'll be able to capture the depth and shadows in the paint itself; and the foams insulation will help prevent thermal bridging behind the glass and contribute to whatever you use to prevent humidty and condensation ruining the view

My grandma’s husband got really into photogrammetry after retiring from the mountain rescue, and started doing conservation work recording historical sites around the lakes for local museums. It was great to see this old guy I’d always associated with nature and hiking get excited about drones and 3D modelling. I guess it was a way for him to stay involved with the land he’d always worked in even as his physical abilities deteriorated, and to help share and preserve some of its wonders for future generations. He never talked to me much, but that was one time he went out of his way to proactively share something with me directly.

Colin, there’s a comic from either the late 90’s or early 2000’s that dealt with what Skynet did after it had killed off the last humans. They started strip mining the earth of all the resources they needed for a huge fleet of ships. The ships were filled with terminators and sent off in every direction so Skynet could terminate all life everywhere. The fleet took centuries to build but each time one was built it was sent off. Potentially the fleet would just eradicate all life everywhere. Forever.
@BIGWIGGLE223
@BIGWIGGLE223 Ай бұрын
Really?! Do you recall what the name of the comic was??
@vipermark7
@vipermark7 Ай бұрын
@ I don’t. Sorry. The entire comic dealt with the last human. It was a little boy. He was on the run with every terminator looking for him. He used all his weapons and when they ran out of ammo, he ran, he fell and broke his leg and crawled away. Then he was caught and unceremoniously killed. He didn’t beg or speak to them. Afterwards all was still. Then they all turned their attention skyward. And it was described that, with earth cleansed of life, Skynet had to turn its gaze outwards. The last frame of the comic was a fleet of ships head inexorably out into space to cleanse life from the galaxy.

Worm "mud" is actually worm castings or worm poop. It is exceptionally good for soil because it contains so many microbes. They sell it in garden stores as fertilizer. Lots of worm mud in your yard means your soil is good and healthy for your lawn.

Most interesting detail I know is that the worms don't digest the plant matter, they ingest the plant matter and digest the microbes that are on the plant matter. So in a sense they are more carnivore than herbivore. Then they pass that decomposed matter out which makes ideal building blocks for new plants.
@larswilms8275
@larswilms8275 Ай бұрын
@@JRTFMSmithson I would like to make a correction to your claim. Since bacteria are neither animal nor plant, They are a whole separate kingdom in the tree of life, we cannot call worms carnivore or herbivore. 3D artist here. You mentioned potentially printing in colour. While I doubt you'll end up going the 3D printing route, if you're using any sort of machine to apply colour, instead of an artist, I'd highly recommend 'de-lighting' the scan first. Those large softboxes are good for getting more even lighting but you'll still want to remove shadows etc. from the scan. If not, when the final piece is placed in-situ any lights that were on during the scan will seem to apply double their lighting (and shadows) to the real-life colour! Awesome to see the progress and the 3D scan really puts into perspective the sheer volume of earth moved! There are tools for estimating that sort of thing, in case you're curious for exact numbers.

I’d approach the rock face like a movie set designer would, which is normally out of foam instead of 3d printed. Which is carved out with a CNC Router, which a large 5 axis would be really the way to go. But a standard CNC Router should get the majority of it, and you might need to remove drastic undercuts in the model for that.

I wouldn't do the fake thing. I'd just build the steel right up to the rock coping it's jagged profile all the way around and sealing it off with cement by hand all the way around the outside edge so the main blob of concrete poured does leak past. Before the main concrete is poured pipe in some 3inch vent pipe to the top and duct it over and up so it just comes out beside the house out of the way. Have tube's coming out of the bottom to so when the wind blows it creates a cross breeze over the rock face behind sealed lean window. Wire in pot lighting to illuminate the rock. Also drill some holes in the bottom of the box so excess water just drains through the rock. It would work great because it's environment is totally isolated from the bunkers environment. I can draft this out for you Colin.

That big crack will drain water. All you need to do is seal it off against the rock with a steel sheet box following the contour. Sealed with lexan window. Air vent pipes at bottom and top of box go up to the surface by the house spaced from one another so they have a pressure difference in the breeze causes real flow through the rock box to keep the windows dry. I can come do it for you if you'd like.

Colin, it would be really cool if you could release a VR app so that people with VR headsets can explore your tunnel system in 1:1 scale. Also, for the tunnel section down to the bunker, you should definitely put in a T-junction at the halfway point. You could use it as an alcove, but it would also give you the option of adding another bunker in the garden at some point in the future (underground pool with retractable roof maybe)? The tunnel run is going to end up being so long that you could do with some kind of wheeled chair to move you from the garage to the bunker - maybe a chair on a rail system, with a hydraulic seat that could raise you up into the shed/pantry? Just a thought!

He needs a retractable pool not a retractable roof? But why a pool I hear you ask! It's the cover for his secret underground rocket launch. The sofa in the front room is mounted on a piston- allowing it to slide through the floor down to bunker level, where it rolls along an underground railway into the rocket bay, before a second piston loads the sofa into the rocket. Meanwhile second sofa is placed into the front room to keep the whole assembly a secret. Bonus points if the rocket has a number 1 on the side...

The 3D scan is quite very cool, a very unique way to photograph everything. For the pho rock reveal through the window, would it be an option to hit up the rock face with some mold release and spray it with a layer of silicone, and the foam for rigidity. Then it could be pulled off and molded with concrete and painted.

For the rock centerpiece, you could 3D print it in plain white and use two to four small projectors to projection-map the color and texture back onto the surface. With the lights off, it would look amazing and give the diorama a subtle, glowing effect at night.

Like many have likely commented already, get in touch with a good scenic artist/painter. You could flatten the relief of the wall to just 30-50mm and still achieve the illusion of depth with paint and texture effects. Especially as it will be behind glass, so not possible to touch it and feel the lack of relief.

I was an engineer at a company in the mid-late 1980s that made flight simulators for commercial and military pilot training. One of my assignments was to develop and write photogrammetry and 3d modeling code to be used to create 3d models of airports, enemy targets, and other terrain features from photographs to give the pilots the best training. Parallax between the view in 2 or more photos is the key to extracting 3d information from 2d photographs.

you're telling me tech that doesn't really work off one picture needs multiple pictures and it's ideal for them not to be the same picture? I jest, but that is kinda the basic principle of the whole thing and is rather apparent due to the necessity of needing more than one image for more than just the reason that it's difficult to shoot through walls

Instead of 3d printing the wall you should look at cutting it out of foam with a CNC. Its much easier to find a large bed CNC, then use a small endmill to cut the texture out. Given you can do them in large sections like 4 x8 then fit them together. With paint you will never see the large section lines, and if you did a bit of bondo would permanently cover the section lines.

My first thought: It's not at a size that can be 3d printed without issues and foam is better at post processing in general. All the set designers are using cnc-ed foam as building blocks for movies and such, so the tech is there. My second thought was in Furze style. What if someone took up a challenge to make an ultrawide resin printer? :D

You should take the 3d scan of the wall, including the sides and floor, shrink it, and use that as the whole recess. Rocks on the back, sides and base of the recess, like a little zoomed out version of the entire rock face. This would solve the issue with depth as well.

As a scanning/photogrammetry professional, I always explain the "magic" of photogrammetry by comparing it to your eyes, your brain (computer) compares the different views from your eyes (images) to perceive depth. you see in 3D, not 2D, so the software basically does the same, but with multiple pictures. concerning what you said at 14:47, in some way, yes. There is a heritage project of a wooden temple in asia (can't quite remember where) that has burned down. Researchers have collected all manner of imagery from visitors, photographers and tourists, and used it to generate a 3D model of a temple that no longer exists. But It's very very hard to do, for technical reasons. So I wouldn't worry too much about it...yet
