I looked up the locations on the Dartmoor travel poster. They are still there and can be visited. Wistman's Wood is one of 3 high altitude oak preserves, apparently part of a larger wood burned to make room for pasture. So the story background checks out as far as oak burning. Apparently the name derives from the term for "eerie". The oaks there are relatively small with a contorted growth pattern and they seemed a bit eerie. One of the sites was suggested to be a locale that provided inspiration for Hound of the Baskervilles. I wish I lived closer because they all looked like scenic and interesting places to visit. Nice job on puzzling out growth requirements so far. 👍
