Randy love the video, and love EQ's. In my opinion no piece of gear can make more difference to the sonics of a system. I have a Lokius in my system to correct some deficiencies in the speaker/room response and it makes a huge improvement in the most surprising way. Setting it to flatten the response, I find the sound stage and imaging are greatly improved. The Lokius also can perform a great trick that the Douk T8 cannot. The Lokius can convert a single-ended input to a balanced output AND pass the single-ended signal. It's a trick I use to provide signals to two power amps, one a SET and the other an ACA pair configured for balanced input mono blocks. A ver neat trick indeed! The point being my EQ is an essential piece of gear that without which my system would suffer sonically.

The most critical area that needs correction for most rooms and speakers is from ~40-400hz. This is also where the bulk of musical energy is, so detailed adjustments outside this range are far less meaningful. Smaller speakers also benefit from a sharp cutoff below their corner frequency to prevent unloaded excursion, which cleans up the rest of the response significantly if they are being driven full range. If I were choosing the frequencies for a 7-band for full range use in a 2.0 system setup they would be as follows: 20hz, 40hz, 80hz, 160hz, 320hz, 1khz, 10khz. Such an EQ could actually be used to "replace" a more sophisticated DSP or room correction system normally used to solve problems in real world rooms. As this product stands currently, it does not provide enough granular control in the most critical range of frequencies where the most correction is required to be of any interest to me. I'm sure it will be an interesting product for some buyers but it shouldn't be.

Can you talk about 1st order high pass filters for between source and amp RCA connection. You mention liking the high pass in a recent amp for the purposes of adding and integration of a subwoofer. It can be done for any amp using a higher quality cap and with knowledge of your amplifiers input impedance. I have miflex kcpu high passing my mains at around 72hz. Really cleans things up at higher volumes. (Much more headroom). It's a noteworthy upgrade in my opinion which can make speakers midrange feel less congested and muddled. Less excursion is also kinder on smaller speakers and can reduce unwanted phase issues when using a subwoofer.

I’ve just received my T8 Pro and am really pleased with it. My Pre/Power Amps are all valve and so the Douks 2 valves/Tubes peaking out of the Equaliser suit me as the rest of mine are hidden. Perhaps I’m in the other camp of thinking-Oh no I’ve got solid state in the chain now! 😂 . My main concern was is it going to degrade the signal and I’m pleased to say that I can’t notice that. It’s a big improvement for me as my system was rather sharp and edgy sounding, especially on vocals. Having the 2KHz adjuster I can now see that’s where the problem stemmed from-although you can’t totally eradicate a bad recoding but it does make it more acceptable. I like the volume control as my preamp used to take off volume wise at the slightest touch-saves having to use attenuators. Another good thing is my preamp has 2 separate volume controls and it’s great using just one now. Also I appreciate the recessed balance control as one of my channels was slightly louder and it narked me staring at the very slightly different volume positions. It wouldn’t be solved by reposition the preamp knobs etc so this is an easy solution and seems more pleasing having the control recessed as you tend not to be so concerned about its position. I love it and the gentle glow of the valves. Thanks for drawing my attention to the Douk Equaliser! It fits the bill completely although I have to thank a contributor for guiding me towards the 7band as I was about to purchase the 5band 🙂.

That unit might be worth a purchase just for the balance setting. Not many things have that, and if you have headphones whose balance is off you need to use that to correct for it. I don't get what the tubes are doing though. Having those is a negative. EQs usually have an overall level you can set that's not really a volume knob, per se. I'm glad that has it. On the EQs I've had it's more of a -5 to +5 sort of setting that I normally just leave in the middle. It is mainly for if you want some EQ boost at low volumes you can boost the overall EQ level, but will add distortion if used at loud volumes.

Hey, have you tested it with different tubes? DOUK AUDIO T8 Pro uses the 6H1N-BN is actually 6Н1П-ВИ soviet tubes. After some research I found some info on the Lampizator website (they are boutique audiophile company from Poland) ant their sound engineers say that basically there are 3 versions of this tube: 1. 6Н1П - standard; 2. 6Н1П-ВИ - prolonged life and durability, "impulse mode" intended (this is the one used in T8 PRO but Lampizator said that from all 3 models this is to be avoided for audio purposes); 3. 6Н1П-EВ - even more prolonged life and durability (about 5000 hours) plus lowest noise. So in my understanding the overall quality will only improve if the tubes are replaced with higher model (which is almost the same price) 6Н1П-ВИ --> 6Н1П-EВ (). Other suggestions to experiment with in terms of valves?

What we desperately need is a clean, analog parametric EQ. Particularly for fine-tuning sub-bass, the ability to adjust frequency and Q is critical to get thump without mud. I would happily pay $200 for just a single band of XLR parametric EQ. MiniDSP is a no-go, because it adds a round-trip AD/DA conversion through whatever cheap-ass chips they throw in it.
@kyleo2113 Жыл бұрын
I use Roon parametric EQ - it has quite a bit of functionality and it keeps it in the digital domain so no extra noise in the chain. downside is that it doesn’t address crossover if you are integrating a sub. I have a minidsp and it’s fine to eq a sub if source can time align subs with mains but agree with you on the conversion especially if using for mains.
@roadfordays Жыл бұрын
@kyleo2113 Yeah, I use pre-DAC digital EQ when possible, but of course that doesn't work for analog sources. Receivers tend to have digital graphic EQ (or room correction), but almost all receivers re-process everything to 48 khz if you run anything other than direct modes, so they screw up the sound too, even when fed digital signal. I bought the Wiim partly because they advertised parametric EQ. It does NOT have parametric EQ, only graphic. And with any digital EQ, you either have to high-shelf cut everything, or reduce your input gain by any amount of frequency you boost. In short, you can't actually boost anything (because you just clip the signal). That's another reasoj graphic EQs suck - you can't equally cut an entire frequency range or shelf. So you are stuck cutting volume first (and permanently losing dynamic range) and then trying to re-add your desired frequencies. With analog, as long as the circuits have headroom, you can simply boost and run a hotter signal. For subwoofer-only needs, I'm guessing a miniDSP is fine, because the AD/DA loop is less damaging to that narrow frequency range (SVS subs already do this with their built-in DSP).
@kyleo2113 Жыл бұрын
@@roadfordays agree with you on all your points. I use a Anthem AVM70 for HT processing and it uses a higher AD conversion sample rate I believe is 192 so maybe an option for analog 2-channel. For two channel I use roon feeding benchmark DAC3-L.

@JoshColletta Жыл бұрын
I would suggest that this EQ is also good for newcomers to train their ears on in terms of recognizing frequencies and which bands represent what types of sound. A full 30-band or even 15-band graphic EQ might seem overwhelming, and (I'm showing my age here) someone who cut their teeth on the cheap three-band graphic EQ's built into boomboxes in the 80's and 90's might not be all that familiar with the spectrum. Does anyone besides me remember those? Maybe a better example would be preset EQ's on your portable CD player. Still too dated a reference? Damnit I'm old. 😆 Anyway, point being that a simple 5- or 7-band EQ -- especially centered at the frequencies of the T8 "Pro" -- is a great way to start learning not just what frequencies equate to what sound, but what frequencies are **complementary** to each other. For example, if you pull down 50Hz, 5k is going to sound louder, so that 6k knob might need to come down a little, too. That sort of thing. Most people have no clue about this stuff until they actually sit down and get familiar with it, so if someone is brand new to this hobby and has no real experience with, say, professional live audio or music production, this could be just the right tool to learn on. Also, did you notice that the Amazon listing DOES now call it the "T8 PRO"? You've got their ears, apparently!
@JoshColletta Жыл бұрын
@@dangerzone007 I would have to disagree with that assessment. In the hi-fi realm, EQ isn't about "fixing" anything, it's about finding the sound that is most pleasing to your ears. Not everyone has the money or time to run through every possible permutation of amp and speaker combinations that sound EXACTLY right to them, and even if we all did, every recording sounds different in some way, because every recording was PRODUCED differently. So if you have an EQ in your setup, you can not only help your system along overall, you can adjust for variations in productions to suit your own tastes in the moment. For example, I have a 15-band EQ in my setup. I generally prefer the "disco smile" sound, but there are some recordings that have already been produced that way and may even be lacking in midrange, themselves. I'm not going to hunt down a completely separate system just to play those songs. All I have to do is reach over to my EQ and bump the midrange bands up a little.
@JoshColletta Жыл бұрын
@@dangerzone007 Well, yes, if you've got the opportunity to do it digitally, I would (and do) go that route, too. But I do still keep the analog EQ in my rack just to maintain the overall sound I like. Which, that being the case, it's really just a set-it-and-forget-it situation. Any minor case-by-case adjustments I take care of before the signal gets that far. Most of my listening is done from a computer, so I can just adjust things in software.
@JoshColletta Жыл бұрын
@@dangerzone007 I have, and I was considering it when I was looking for an EQ. Behringer makes some pretty decent stuff, so unless you're tossing it around in a flight case or something, I'm sure it'd work just fine. I ended up going with the ART EQ341, though. Sure, it's about $30 more expensive, but I didn't want all those lights on the front panel, I don't need (or want) feedback protection, and I don't need a crossover (if I ever do, I'll just buy a separate crossover unit; I like modularity). So I may have paid more for less, but it was the right choice for me.

You make a good pint re individual hearing loss - for those screaming never use an equaliser. It adjusts individual issues. IE known issues via measurements or you just know that you have loss at a certain frequency. @cheapaudioman so the first T8 EQ has frequency controls that increase in factor of ~4 (64, 256, 512), and the new T8 goes up in factors of ~2.5 (50, 125, 315 etc) - are the roll offs between the old and new different, as in the Q values are smaller on the new one, or does the new one have the situation where changing a control impacts 'further' up or down the other bands. I'm not explaining this very well...

I bought the other T8 and returned it because it was veiled. I have the bellari eq570 and pp532 for a passive preamp with worlds best cables for interconnects... they are excellent

Can you run your amp directly into this thing and use the volume control so basically you’re using this as a preamp with EQ?
@ShazeemKhan Жыл бұрын
The source will plug into eq input and eq output will go into the amp and u can adjust the volume with the volume control on the eq. Hope that helps

hey Randy 12au7 tripple mica black plates are amazing in this eq. I am a tube guy just ask jcoffman

Ah next revision a Q width control would be really cool. But tubes.. when there’s only two it just usually feels gimmicky. Unless you can bypass at flat / on and hear much difference..? Anyone tried it? Oh shiz there’s no bypass switch

Anyone over 60 years old can barely hear 10 k, & equalizing a low power amp using 50 hertz or lower will make the amp most likely clip, unless you’re trying to get rid of some room modes. You’re right about Q

Sound Signature Yes! I would buy this in a minute if I had replaceable op-amps! Not tubes, I can alway use a tube buffer if need be in the !oop!

@mikelanier5617 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I use the Schiit Lokius in my headphone stack and it is dead quiet at idle and just a quick turn of a knob to boost or cut depending on my source. Great quality piece made in the USA 🇺🇸 ❤

@@mikelanier5617 Yea, actually Randy turned me on to Schiit Audio products. Some of the best low cost high quality audio products out there.

Let me get this straight: the Douk T 8 has another called, oddly, the T8. How about the name T8 Again, or better: the Taint.

@@dangerzone007 I do not have to find a permanent solution. I have MY solution for some crappy cds. I don’t use an eq for anything else. I am definitely not going to buy new cds, since I barely listen to them.

Why would anyone pay actual money for this when you can use EQ on your source, and decide for your own self how many bands, which frequencies and q values on top of that, all for free?
