Memphian here, I grew up in Westwood which is where VooDoo Village is located. I graduated High School with this Mane from VooDoo Village. Basically, it’s a group of family members from Haiti that settled there and bought with them, their religious customs. Really nice people that used to stay there and they did not bother anyone, only a few family members remain there as most of them became more Americans than Haitian.

Hello I am also from South Memphis aka Whitehaven. I us to work with a guy that said that he went to VooDoo Village and that they lived underground or the rest of their homes where underground. I don't know how true that is but I have a question are they or Westwood located off of Third? I as because that's what he claims.

I'm a recent transplant to Memphis and love seeing these videos about my adopted hometown. If you want to read more about the history of Hoodoo in Memphis and the mid-South, Tony Kail (the guy who wrote that Medium article) has written some good books about it. A. Schwab is still on Beale St, and they still sell a ton of candles and oils and all kinds of magick adjacent things.

As of crime, crime is in every city regardless of religion or spiritual belief. Crime is a lack of social and political infrastructure components, in my honest opinion, but that's a different conversation. Memphis has over 800 faithed based churches/groups, but for the longest time, we were known for embezzlement and now aggravated violent crimes. Crime is in every city regardless of religion or spiritual belief. As for being thankful, yes, I am thankful that anyone acknowledged Memphis in any form or fashion that doesn't concentrate on negative traits. We are a multifaceted city. We carry a strong spiritual and religious history, especially Judaism, as well. However, that's just me and my opinion.

I had to get the scoop on Tennessee Hoodoo for sure. Memphis is rich in culture, Hoodoo culture, Bluesman and woman also used Hoodoo and they sing about it in their music! It's speaks about a man name Bishop who I've also heard older ppl in Nashville speak of him.

I'm from the Mtown. There is so much history here. As a child we had some many "traditions" that were just normal to our community. I didn't find out that a lot of it was actually hoodoo. Some one mentioned Jewish mysticism in the comments. I remember growing up in North Memphis area close to St. Jude. That area used to be a Jewish community and some of the older homes had Oudji boards in floors as floor furnace covers. I witness them in several of the houses of my childhood friends growing up. Not totally sure if it was related to the Jewish people who used to live in the community but its was very interesting to see. Of course we didnt dare use them. My stepmother removed them from our home when we moved there.

Hello, native Mississippian here and current resident of Memphis. You may not think of Memphis as such a place for rootwork but there's a whole book out there. It's called Stories of Rootworkers and Hoodoo in the Mid-South by Tony Kail. Mississippi has a deep connection to rootwork as well. AW Schwab is still open on Beale Street and it still sells items for rootwork including tarot/oracle cards. It's on the 3rd floor of the store. Beale isn't what it used to be but it's still a great experience. The Ernest Withers Gallery is on Beale as well.
