There's an extra layer of lore on the ending. The mission briefing said Mortality Absolute which means it's a suicide mission and the controller said "Die well brothers" after launching the missile from the ship because they're basically dropping a nuke on their position and they're not expected to survive the blast. There is a lore quote that goes "Only in death does duty end" so when the sergeant says "Our duty is done. It's time to go," what he really means is it's time to die. THAT'S why Titus says "Not yet old man." And turns to fight his way out and not accept death. There's almost 40 years of lore and other media for 40k so you definitely do not have to play the tabletop game to be a fan. If anything, with the recent mainstream resurgence, there will likely be quite a few new fans that never have and never will play the tabletop but will enjoy some other media in the franchise.

Nobody who even slightly values their time and money should touch the tabletop (and I'll mostly ignore how absolutely overflowing the fandom is with chuds and incels for this comment). Especially considering how utterly greedy and shitty GW is. Buying a top of the line computer for me is cheaper than collecting their fucking army models. Hell, some singular models are worth more than a damn RTX 4090 despite being two only feet of plastic (no, there is no justifiable excuse for that price, you are actually a moron if you think there is). It is genuinely cheaper to buy a decent budget 3D printer and grab some files for models than it is to pay their outrageous prices.

To be fair gw is really loose on what an accurate space marine is. Like some times they release stuff where 20 guys with hammers and shivs can kill 1 then turn around and say 500 augmented men with power weapons isn't enough.
@NastyStankyChicken6 күн бұрын
Even still isn't completely lore accurate, marines have nano-second reaction times and have been described as blurs in combat by mortal eyes. It's probably done so the viewer can actually enjoy the combat but a lore accurate marine moves so quick you can't even see them other then a blur.

Yep, I did give GW like $60 bucks for some Warhammer Fantasy models i never actually painted as a kid (I'm just not an artsy person), but I've enjoyed the games and books and art and sharing the concepts and ideas with friends. I first learned about 40k cause my buddy in junior high was helping me run a mile consistently and he would talk about the Primarchs, the Emperor, and The Horus heresy while I was trying to keep pace with him. Crazy how far we've come to now witness Syama Pederson's work and now his contribution to They Shall Know No Fear, which is dripping with his style with that crazy efficient but satisfyingly crunchy and lethal combat movement. Never had to collect 40k minis to enjoy of of this. This world has legs.

I have never played the tabletop and have absolutely no intention of doing so, but there are tons of other media I've been engaged with - books, videogames, cinematics, lore videos, plenty to choose from. The selection of books alone is insane, almost every genre is out there and even with some really quality writing out there occasionally. I've been brought in with Dawn of War series, after the Winter Assault I put my hands on my first Commissar Cain novel and then it's a blur 😅

"That was so well received that Games Workshop gave them a job." Lol, no. He got an "offer he couldn't refuse" from a company that went on a litigious warpath against fan-made content that was more popular than their own media, and he wasn't the only one. They hired him, teased a follow up to Astartes after retouching and ruining the original, then promptly shelved him. Which is why his employment pages state he is a freelancer working on his own projects under his own studio (Digital Bones Studio), and no longer working at GW or on anything Warhammer related independently. Also, Syama Pedersen wasn't just "the animator" for this episode, he was the layout artist contracted by Blur Studios, not GW.

@@Nyx_2142 I keep seeing people calling him "the animator" on this project, he's just one of many listed layout artists buried deep in the credits. The daemon/sorcerer dug out the fears of Ultramarines and materialized the result. They don't have much fears because of decades of indoctrination and usually respond to fear with agression. However seems that something remains beneath the layers. The first one apparently was afraid that the armor would fail him, or he was claustrophobic, or that he was weak without his armor, hence the armor tore him out of itself and crushed him. The wound materialized as if it was real, and blood came out of helmet. We don't see the fear of second one. The third one, Metaurus, was afraid that Titus will turn to chaos, hence spikes and horns on his armor, and will betray his brothers, and was stabbed in the vision, that materialized into a real stab wound.
@deed0h6 күн бұрын
I think it's slightly different from what you say each death represents. The sorcerer turns their own fears or doubts against themselves. The first doubts himself aka afraid of failure and we see him kill himself. (the second dies without us seeing how) Metarus doubts someone else, fearing what he brought into the Ultramarines in Titus. Maybe due to results of the Space Marine games' plot, or that look when he hands Titus back the chain. It gives me the vibe he didn't like Titus abandoning role to rush in. Since he chose Titus he feels responsible, and we see 'Titus' stab him. Titus has no doubts/fear and thus can't be broken.

More comments under this video than under entire week of previous videos on the channel combined 😁 WH fans are passionate indeed. I've been playing the tabletop 40k since 2006, and I watched all Warp Reactions for the Expanse series since the beginning among other stuff, so this video was an unexpected and rather pleasant surprise! Glad you're having fun with Secret Level so far! By the way, the authors of Space Marine 2 did a pretty neat job on revealing Warhammer lore, so if you finished it, you know most of the basic concepts anyway. Beyond that -- been playing for 15 years, and still haven't read even a quarter of total number of books. Trust me, you can't know EVERYTHING, there is really a lot, so don't worry about it. Considering that Games Workshop (the main company) often retcons and rewrites some parts of lore now and then, not even worth trying. Regardless of video: this is pretty much an ordinary (yet suicidal, lol) mission for space marines. Some enemies like cultists and daemons of Tzeentch are familiar, while the others like the 'boss' is completely new. It can be a mutated human sorcerer, or (more likely) a high-ranked Daemon of Tzeentch, we can't know for sure. And that's the beauty! You can come with stories like this, add some unknown aliens or daemons, and it would still be at least somewhat lore accurate. I highly recommend to also watch the 'Astartes' short video series (5 separate videos, but you will likely find a united single film, it's about 5 minutes long in total) made by a third-party author -- he alone did such a high quality product that he outmatched all the animations made before, official and home-brewed). He later joined the team and participated in making 'And They Shall Know No Fear', so you will likely find a lot of similarities. Cheers 🖖🤘

You've mentioned in your Star Trek videos that you came to the Trek fandom through the RPG (which, as a the designer of Star Trek Adventures, feels like a great compliment). It's entirely possible to do the same with 40k: there are two current tabletop RPGs for Warhammer 40,000-Wrath & Glory, and Imperium Maledictum-either of which I'd recommend as ways into the setting.

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse. To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Ohh, nice - In spite of doing of all the options *of course* the Angels of Death and *of course* Ultramarines (I'd have preferred to see a Guard Regiment caught in this WW1esqu warfare against insane powers) but hey!- it's against Chaos not the Tyranids (Orks would have been fun, but then, those probably display too much of the inherent [and fully intended] "fun with nihilism" of the whole setting). Again, while awesome I'd always love to see more of WH40k media to acknowledge the fully intended absurdity of the setting and yes, I'm a WH40k fan *without* playing the game either... though I own a ton of miniatures and painted and build those as a modelling exercise... but can't play with them, I modified them with things, parts and all that my huge 35th scale military modelling supplies offer so they're completely unusable in a game (it doesn't have all that complex rules for a Tactical Table Top Wargame).🧐😆 Best regards Raoul G. Each of those guys in that armour is a super human, biologically engineered ULTIMATE warrior. Only the hardest, strongest & most vicious children will even be selected to TRY to become an Astartes. Only 1 in a million will make it to becoming a full Astartes. In a suit of armour that makes them even faster, stronger, more agile, & essentially turns them into running tanks. That buggy never stood a chance! Also the packs on their backs. Merely power packs. The nuclear fusion power generator that powers the whole suit. Also most of the guns they fire are essentially hand held RPG's. These guys don't play 😂 Best of luck resisting the rabbit hole
